If you are looking for a different kind of city near Buenos Aires, you might want to take a one-hour trip to La Plata. This city, founded in the late 19th century, following a perfect grid, can offer a quiet couple of days. You can visit the Cathedral at Plaza Moreno and the Natural History Museum in the North-East forest where the National University of La Plata stands.

La Plata is a city of parks. The people are very well read and focus on health and wellbeing. You will see hoards of people walking, jogging and using the free public gym equipment in almost all the big parks that are about every 6 blocks apart. The amount of markets are also impressive, weekends and public holidays scores of artesans and food vendors grace the parks in their rows of little white tents.
For some reason La Plata gets a bad rap on the news and has a rep for being full of crime. We have lived here for 9 months and have not even seen evidence of that. Big change from living in CABA.

Well worth a visit to La Plata the capital city of the province of Buenos Aires. Recommend a city tour but a must see is their Museum of Natural History one of the most impressive in the world and connected to the University in La Plata. La Plata is a nice University town, impressive trees and city green spaces, not as chaotic as Buenos Aires, fine restaurants (cheaper) and a calmer relaxed abode. Impressive Cathedral as well. Worth the effort to travel there (one hour drive by bus or car).

La Plata offeres the chance to have a day out on the train from Buenos Aires. It is also the home of 2 top league football sides including Estudiantes. Its a train ride from Buenos Aires about 90 mins, but ridiculously cheap, about £1.50 return. Train travel in Buenos Aires is an experience in itself. It is best to avoid times when it is really crowded though. There's a few attraction in La Plata itself such as the cathererdal and chruches and some squares and parks. Not worht a special trip if time is short, but if you are on a long holidaygive it a thought. Familiarise yourself with a map and layout of the place before you go as getting maps in the town is not too easy
