- AfariaUberlandia, MG2,323 contributionsIt deserved a score of six, but as five is the maximum... Simply sensational, unavoidable program. It is very varied, dinosaurs, reptiles, birds, mammals, insects; a strong dose of knowledge is received in the visits that need time at least three hours. The entrance costs 4,000 pesos, very fair price for the quality of what they offer, children up to 12 years do not pay. Recommended for all ages.Visited November 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 17, 2024
- Pato BViedma, Argentina57 contributionsThe museum itself is an ARCHITECTURAL JEWEL! The incredible façade and its interior even better. I went with one of my children and I was amazed. It consists of different floors and as one progresses, it tells about the evolution of the earth, man, animals and cultures and obviously it has different life-size fossils, the part about the dinosaurs is a separate topic, incredible! 100% recommendedVisited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 31, 2024
- Pedro Soto 🌿La Plata, Argentina1,791 contributionsThe Museum of Natural Sciences of the National University of La Plata is one of the most beautiful that exists. It has unique collections of biodiversity, geology and archaeology. In the bird sector, samples and museology have been updated. It needs more artificial lighting, but it is always a pleasure to visit.Visited June 2023Traveled soloWritten May 17, 2024

The entrance seems expensive to me and they don't have air conditioning inside. With the high temperatures that exist in the silver. It is a little uncomfortable to visit with so much heat. The most impressive thing is the part about dinosaurs and prehistoric animals.

I've been to this museum twice now and consider myself lucky as it is so wonderfuly maintained with excellent displays, great tour guides (ask for Florencia S. as she is senior there, very knowledgeable, speaks good english, and very friendly), and very comprehensive. They are constantly changing the displays and there is a lot of ongoing research too. For those of you who want to take a little break they have a nice little coffee shop, plus a couple of gift shops. If you like to walk around the park there, it is a true pleasure and is photogenic as well. There's another small restaurant in that park with great food with beer, wine, or soft drinks to accompany. It's quite small so go early to get a seat. Cheers, Jeff
PS, if you have any questions feel free to contact me. I still have contacts in La Plata also who are always so helpful. Great friends!

The first purpose-built museum in Latin America, and something of a relic in itself, the Museo de Ciencias Naturales is a real treat for anyone with a fondness for old-fashioned museums. Curatorial policy, whereby each room is more or less autonomously organized, and a chronic shortage of funds make the museum somewhat patchy, but its highlights, together with its general ambience, are sufficient to make it well worth a visit. The beautiful circular entrance hall , the first of the museum's 21 rooms, all chronologically ordered, lies immediately to the right of the entrance hall. The first section is devoted to rocks and minerals , including an example of a fossilized araucaria trunk from a petrified forest in the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz. The palaeontological section which follows contains a reproduction of the fossilized remains of the largest spider ever found: named the Megarachne Servinei HĂĽnicken, the fifty-centimetre-long arachnid was found in Bajo de VĂ©liz in San Luis Province and is some 290 million years old. There is also a reproduction of a diplodocus skeleton, donated to the museum in 1912 by the North American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie; the unusually complete original is housed in the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. In the same room, you'll find the original skeleton of a neuquensaurus, or titanosaurus, a herbivorous dinosaur common in the north of Patagonia towards the end of the Cretaceous Period. Room VI is dedicated to the beginnings of the Cenozoic Period , also known as the Age of Mammals, which extend from around 65 million years ago to the present day. The room's impressive collection of skeletons includes the gliptodon, forerunner of today's armadillos; the enormous megatherium, largest of the megafauna which, when standing upright on its powerful two hind legs, would have reached almost double its already impressive six metres; the toxodon, somewhat similar to the hippopotamus, though unrelated; and the camel-like macrauchenia. The Latin American Archaeology section is to be found upstairs along with the collection of objects from the northwest of Argentina. The first room to the left of the stairs has a large collection of ceramics, mostly from the pre-Columbian cultures of the Peruvian region: including a fine collection of brightly coloured Nazca pottery. In the second room the most notable pieces are the so-called suplicantes from the Condorhuasi-Alamito culture that thrived in Central Catamarca between about 200 and 500AD. Highly sophisticated and unique to the Condorhuasi, the suplicantes are among the most valuable pieces in the museum's collection.

The science and natural history museum is of modest size. However, the exhibits are wonderfully presented. Captions are all in Spanish. But, even if you don't read Spanish, it's worth the trip.

The Museum of Natural Science is an historic marvel. Unbelievable entry fee of a mere $2 U.S. how would anyone want to miss a museum made famous with the works of Charles Darwin? A teaching museum attached to the University in Plata, it has one of the world's largest collection of fossils, prehistoric animal skeletons, insects, mammals, reptiles, plant life, indigenous origins of civilization etc. Very impressive large collection occupying four floors.

A very amusing and captivating visit both for the youngsters and grown-ups as well. We can not forget our grandkids faces thrilled by the large dinosaurs exhibited there but also the didactic explanations set along the collections. There are several collections, paleontological, anthropological and archeological. For more details, there are several videos on each section posted on the museum page, available in Spanish or English. This historical place was founded by the same time La Plata city was set over a century ago. Hope you enjoy it as we did.

The museum is very interesting and almost exclusively in Spanish so it helps to be able to read Spanish.
I found it better on dinosaurs than the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in Buenos Aires and better on Argentina's indigenous people than any other museum in Argentina I have been too (although the Museo de Arqueologia de Alta Montana in Salta is also an excellent specialist museum with its mummies.)

We made the trip out from Constitution Station (just $8AR return, very comfortable air conditioned train runs every half hour and takes less than an hour) and enjoyed a few hours wandering this fabulous museum. Such a big range of South American and some international exhibits. One of the best collections of its type I’ve ever seen.

Muchas gracias
