Impressive French Beaux Arts Building
Oct 2019
Built in early 1900s as the private residence of one of Argentina's wealthiest families. Later was HQ for Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1936-89). Now used for special events. Sometimes open for tours. Very impressive exterior worth seeing even if you can't go inside. Near Plaza San Martin and short walk from end of Florida Street pedestrian mall.

Beautiful Foreign Affairs building

This impressive building houses the Foreign Affairs Ministry. I wish we could have seen the interior. It is near the Torre Monumental. Across from the palacio is a monument honoring General San Martin. Visiting dignitaries lay flowers here to honor the Argentinian hero. He is considered the Liberator of Argentina.

The perfect place to start the tour of the French Quarter

This French style palace is the perfect place to start the tour to visit the French Quarter. First visit the Plaza San Martín, including the Paz Palace (guided tours) and the Monument to General San Martín. Then take Esmeralda St. in direction to Juncal St. At the intersection of Esmeralda and Juncal, take a look at the Estrugamou Palace. Take a look at the garage to see a nice replica of the Wing Victory of Samothrace. Take Esmeralda St. in direction to Arroyo. Then take Arroyo St. and cross the 9 de Julio Avenue. Continue walking to find Cerrito St. Once there, take a look at the Ortiz-Basualdo Palace (French Embassy) and the Pereda Palace (Brazilian Embassy). On Cerrito St. you can also see the Alzaga-Unzué Palace (Four Seasons Hotel - you can go inside). Continue your tour along Alvear Avenue. At the corner of Alvear Avenue and Montevideo St. take a look at the Fernández Anchorena Palace (sit of the Holy See). On the same block you can visit the Duhau Palace (Hyatt Hotel), perfect spot to have a coffee in the beautiful gardens. Continue your tour along Alvear Avenue to the Alvear Palace Hotel. Enjoy the bars and restaurants. I suggest to take Quintana Avenue to come back to the downtown area, so you can also see the Recoleta area.

Beautiful Architecture

We recognised the Parisian flair of Buenos Aires in the San Martin Palace which was inspired in the French architecture of the 18th century. San Martin Palace is today the Ceremonial venue of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship.

Never Open

We went there twice in a week in Buenos Aires and were told it would be open on Thursday at 3 pm for a guided tour in English. But when we get there they tell us to come back tomorrow. Open hours in Argentina are very fluid, which makes it extremely hard to plan.

interesting but somewhat empty

There are free tours through this building (a rare thing for a foreign tourist in this city, who always pays more than the locals for any museum ticket ). We went for the 3PM tour. It leads through the three buildings that comprise this residence. Some of the opulence is stunning and most of it now seems somewhat abandoned and empty. The balcony overlooking the garden is very elegant. There is very little left by the previous owners. It feels like a very elegant hotel. Photography is prohibited inside the building, sadly.

Palacio San Martin is a really beautiful old building in downtown Buenos Aires. The architecture is stunning and is the ceremonial headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A lovely structure, it is well worth seeing when in the neighbourhood.

An ornate colonial building in central Buenos Aires

One of the best preserved old colonial style buildings in Buenos Aires. Impressive exterior and very photogenic.

It would have been nice to see inside, but this did not prove possible when we visited.

Not worth going out of your way for, but nice to see.

Really felt like I was standing there in France just by looking at the Euro styled architecture of this building. Certainly beautiful. Check it out if in the area, there are a lot of other points of interest in this part of BA.

This is a old Parisian style architectural design building. The building is beautiful. You can see on your city walk or tour.This is a government building.
