Top ways to experience Estadio Alberto J. Armando (La Bombonera)

The area

Address
Neighborhood: La Boca
A neighborhood defined by its immigrant roots, La Boca still maintains this past alive in its streets today. Due to its proximity to the river, the neighborhood became the preferred settling area for immigrants of a wide variety of origins, who ended up living together in the conventillos. Thus, these houses became a melting pot of different cultures and traditions that birthed creations like tango and lunfardo. Nowadays, this legacy can be seen and felt on Caminito Street, which welcomes visitors with colorful facades, cobblestones, and street artists showcasing their skills. Just like its neighbor San Telmo, La Boca is one of the prime destinations to experience the traditions and customs that originated from the city’s immigrant past and which have shaped its distinct identity.

The experience in the stadium was great, we attended Boca vs Barracas on August 5th, 2024. Still, getting into the stadium was a bit problematic, as our instructions were not clear and the stuff around the stadium unable to fully guide as. The crowd was large, many people obviously intoxicated. Be careful!

I booked this tour online, mostly because my travel buddy really wanted to visit a soccer stadium in Argentina. Although the Rio de Plata professional futbol stadium is much larger and more impressive, I chose the Boca Jr stadium because the museum and tour seemed more detailed and personal. Here's the scoop:

PROS:
1. The online tickets were cheap...around $13 each and included skip the line (not necessary), the tour of the stadium and museum, and view of the locker room.

2. The ticket is good for any time slot for the day reserved. Tours run every hour. I found this convenient since Boca is a bit far from central Buenos Aires. The flexible ticket allowed us more freedom in the schedule and time to look around the La Boca/San Telmo tourist area first.

3. Though I'm not a soccer fanatic, I enjoyed the tour. I was equally impressed and horrified while listening to the explanation of the stadium design - the standing-only section above the visiting team's locker room where Boca Jr fans would stomp and shout to intimidate the opponent, the inclusion of one single bathroom for the entire visitor's section, etc. I know the rest of the world is very intense about fútbol, but... yikes.

4. The museum was well designed and is self-toured after the guided stadium tour. Memorable moments caught on film adorn the walls. A giant soccer ball display appears to float in the middle of the enormous room, but turns out to be a 360° theater in which visitors stand to watch a 20 minute film (in Spanish with English subtitles) highlighting the history of the stadium. Peppered with clips of game highlights, the chants and cheers of the fans reverbrate from all directions, pulling viewers into this world of electrifying enthusiasm as the stadium roars to life on the screen. The film comes to a poignant close, centering on the stadium as a symbol of unity, pride, and honor in the hearts of those who live there. It's quite touching, and almost made me want to take up soccer again.

5. Lots of memorabilia, plaques, statues, players' shirts, and photos. A hallway is lined with life-size photo cut-outs of all the players in their uniforms and visitors can take pictures with them. Staff also takes a picture of each visitor "posing with a player" (against a green screen that superimposes a 3D image of a player in the picture). This photo is free and included in the tour package.

6. The tour includes a stop in the locker room where each player's shirt hangs on the door of his locker. Personally, I don't really understand the appeal of an empty locker room, but to many, this was the best part of the tour.

CONS:

1. It's a bit far from central Buenos Aires and takes about 30 to 40min in a taxi or metro/ taxi. (The closest metro stop on the southern Line C, Plaza Constitución, is still a 15 min taxi to La Bombonera.)

2. Online, the "best package" ticket description included a walk on the field, but at that point in the tour, a select few with a different color wristband were allowed to walk down to a small area of the field while the rest of us plebians were herded toward the museum. At the time the wristbands were issued before the tour, I assumed we had access to everything in the description when I bought the tickets. It's not a huge deal, but my friend was disappointed, and if we'd known ahead of time, we would've paid more to be allowed on the field (even though it was supposed to be included already). But once on the tour, no changes can be made or negotiated, so I thought that was a little shady.

3. The tour is entirely in Spanish and the guide spoke very fast. I caught less than half of what he explained, so when my friend didn't translate for me, I just kind of zoned out and felt like the tour was dragging a little. If he'd spoken a little slower, or I'd been more fluent in Argentine Spanish, I would've enjoyed it more.

4. The area of La Boca is known as a dangerous area. It is heavily trafficked by tourists, and as such, is a profitable hub for pickpockets, scam artists, and thieves on motorcycles. Despite its colorful charm, the area is an impoverished one, and tourists should travel in groups, guard possessions diligently, and avoid visiting after 5pm.
That said, we went on a rainy day and very few tourists were there. Without any unsuspecting targets to stalk, very few sketchy figures bothered to stick around, so we did not feel unsafe walking the area or standing in front of the stadium, taking pictures.

Hope that helps! Enjoy Buenos Aires!

The football stadium of Boca Juniors is crammed between the neighborhood houses and you can only take a good picture from the distance. If you come too close you don't get a good frame. It is painted in the team's banner colors and the area is filled with posters or pictures of famous players that graced its pitch. Not a very modern stadium, but a classic one.

Great stadium, in the middle of La Boca. The museum is nice, but don't miss the tour, which takes you all the way around the stadiums lower ring, and the dressing rooms as well. It is in english and spanish combined.

The home of the Boca Juniors, a storied franchise and seemed to be the favorite team of Argentinian's that I met. There were a few tour options and I ended up going with the lowest cost for 380 pesos which just offered up a large viewing area at one of the goals. you can walk down by the grass or be up in the higher seats. There is a restaurant up here as well but I skipped it favor of some street food. I love the number 12 in the stands, in honor of the fans. It's small but an amazing place to see and should be on any sports fan's bucket list.

One of the highlights of my life to finally visit La Bombonera. The Stadium tour is fantastic, it takes you right through the Stadium and the guide has a great knowledge and understanding of the club. The best Stadium tour I've ever been on. And you can have something to eat and drink in the club restaurant afterwards if you like (obviously that's not included in the ticket). The museum is brilliant, again, the best sporting museum I've seen anywhere in the world. I've always wanted to visit here - It was everything I expected, and more! I walked from Congreso, but bus, metro (Subte) or taxi are all available, and easier. The museum and Stadium tour together is 470 pesos, but individually, they are both less than that. Tours go regularly after 10.00am. Available in Spanish, Portuguese and English. Absolute must do when in Buenos Aires, even if you are not into football. It gives you a great insight into the psyche of the city. The passion!

As many suggest, book your tickets through the stadium’s own website. You will get a guided tour and even pictures if you book the VIP tour that is not expensive at all.
I would also recommend to get there by taxi, it is safe enough and if you are concerned about where you are going, make sure to download the city map on your mobile map app so you can follow the route even if you have no data.
There will also be taxis outside available once finished or you can head to Caminito afterwards where there is a taxi rank nearby.
I gave it 4 stars as my husband does not speak Spanish and I had to translate the guided tour for him.
Some people complain about the area, the state of the stadium, etc., but they don’t seem to understand the location of the stadium, the background history of it and what it represents.
It would be nice if the coffee shop could have a few more vegan options but this is in line with the country’s overall vegan food availability and can’t be blamed solely on the shop.
We found it entertaining and my husband was very happy to have touched the grass where the 10 played 😂

Fake tour guide out the front, charged us $300 pesos for a brief walk around, took our money then left so there was no walking us around. We saw the change rooms & the grand stand briefly, rushed clearly not meant to be there legitimately. Waited in the tunnel to go to the field to have our photo taken, it was damp & dark. Even for those soccer fans like my partner it was really disappointing not recommended.

The neighborhood is very dangerous. Pickpockets and shady characters were common. The tour of the place was overpriced and poorly organized. I was expecting something better

All football fans must ensure that they make their way to watch the Boca Juniors play at La Bombonera. The atmosphere is electric well before match time and doesn’t stop until well after the final whistle. The fans are incredible. Be advised that you won’t be able to walk up and buy a ticket. You will have to buy a tour package, or take the route of making it work on the street with locals. Boca does not allow non-members (via photo ID) access to the grounds unless you’re with a pre-booked tour group.

Make this happen, you will not be disappointed.
