The Old Pharmacy makes for quite an interesting visit as it takes you to a pharmacy that still operates the way it used to from ages past! Locate downtown - not too far from the Pink House, it is worth a visit. The building itself is an architectural beauty. Recommended!

Don't know why I went to this old-style still operating pharmacy - probably Lonely Planet made me do it - but it was a fun visit to the past.

Look out for this quaint little shop on the corner directly opposite the Basilica de San Francisco. It is a wonderful window on a bygone era, miraculously keeping its original 1894 appearance. It is worth sticking your head inside to see perfectly preserved wooden shelves stacked with ancient medicine bottles. Highlight is the ornate painted ceiling.

Glad we went into this historic old pharmacy! It still operates as a business. The locals having their prescriptions filled as our guide explains the history. And the owners didn't seem to mind at all.

Located in Defensa St and adjacent to another historical treasure, the Basilica de San Francisco, this wonderful pharmacy still serves patrons with necessities and was the first of its kind in the city. The name La Estrella is situated above the entry door and as this pharmacy has been open since the mid 1830’s its home is in a building... More

Man, sounds crazy but I ran out of organic toothpaste and went to this really cool Pharmacy and they speak English. I got 5 tubes of organic toothpaste, two organic body sprays, feminine hygiene products and 4 bars or organic soap for 60.00. The salt tooth paste work great. My gums look great and my teeth seem whiter than last... More

Lovely old farmacy, to step back in time. A little more expensive than the chains but worth it, for the ambience.

Staying in Montserrat

Neighborhood Profile
As part of the historic quarter of Buenos Aires, Montserrat is defined by the historical events that took place there and the landmarks that have stood the test of time. The Plaza de Mayo is at the center of this connection to history: countless public demonstrations have passed through this square, going back to the May Revolution of 1810. Walking the streets of Montserrat allows us to imagine what Buenos Aires may have looked like in the past: the Cabildo takes us back to the late 16th century, while the Palacio Barolo and the traditional cafés carry us to the early 20th. Nowadays, the neighborhood is inundated every day by office workers, buses, and taxis; still, the cobblestones, narrow sidewalks, and subway stations from the 1910s remind us that we are surrounded by history everywhere we look.
