The area

Address
Neighborhood: Palermo
Best known as the largest neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Palermo is divided into different quarters, each with its own unique identity. The high-end quarter is Palermo Chico, characterized by magnificent mansions, regal avenues, and exclusive apartment buildings, and home to the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires (MALBA), a favorite amongst locals. The largest park in the city, the Bosques de Palermo, is Palermo's most famous landmark and a popular destination for nature walks, picnics, rollerblading, and cycling. The scene becomes much trendier in Palermo Soho, a hip area known for its cool cafés and unique design stores, filled with shoppers on weekends; and Palermo Hollywood, renowned for the numerous restaurants, bars and nightclubs, which make it the preferred spot for nights out and special occasions.

The Hippodrome Race Track and Casino is a beautiful building located on Libertador street in Buenos Aires.

At first glance, this very fancy building looks like it was once something very special. After you enter the place (and check your backpacks because they aren't allowed), you'll learn the entire building is a casino, but only a casino of Slot Machines.

Even if you've been to Las Vegas, the sheer number of slot machines in this building will leave you speechless. There are literally thousands, taking up 3 floors and a quarter mile worth of casino floor, and every square inch is filled with Slot Machines, the digital kind. Some of the floor is smoking, another is not. In all, a VERY depressing place. There is simply no need for all these slot machines, and no need for people to be gambling solely on slot machines. It's kind of ridiculous.

Being from the states, we did play any random slot. Inserted 100AP into a machine (about 70 cents USD) and played for about 10 minutes. Yes, it's that cheap if you want it to be. But not very fun - because the digital games are impassible to understand truth be told! There are slots in front of you, behind you, upstairs, and downstairs - you'll need air and a map to get out of this place. Skip it though.

We then went outside to see the horse racing (which started at 3pm on this particular Monday. We watched a couple races, and bet on one (but didn't win). This was a new experience, so we enjoyed it more than the casino.

Bottom line, I recommend coming here if you've never seen horse racing, but skip the casino. Across the street are polo grounds, but those are less frequent than what we saw in the Hippodrome horse races.

We went early and weren’t sure what to expect and were pleasantly surprised. There is a casino for gamblers if you are into that but the horse racing was so much fun to watch. There are a few tables near the rails and because we were early we got one. Most people sit on the tiered stairs and watch the races.

We don’t gamble but would pick who we thought would win and sometimes did quite well. You really don’t see much until they are in the final stretch but it is very exciting to watch. The races start early and last all day.

The hippodromo is a great place to visit. Entry is free, or it's just 25 peso's to the VIP area (around $2 USD, not a typo). I regularly go to the races in Melbourne Australia, and it is a lot nicer here. Feels like you're in Europe. The people of BA have done a great job with this place.
If you want to go into the VIP make sure your wearing leather shoes, pants, and a collared shirt (polo will suffice).
Races are ran differently here than back home- and rarely are actually on time. Seems to be a race every 25 minutes or so.
Form guides are free.
Hint- if you're in the VIP and you want to have a beer in the outside section, you can buy a beer in the downstairs pokies/slot machine area, pour it into a plastic cup and sit down and enjoy the races right next to the finish line. Only way to do it.

There are two different seating areas. One is free to the public, has outside seating (with shade from the sun), and has inside tables. If you want to see the races you need to get a table at the window, which the waitress did not seem to want to give to us. There are drinks served in the restaurant. The nicer seating area is the private club, but you can get in for 25 pesos and you must have a collared shirt and long pants. The track here is huge, and they only used the 1 km straight strip. The finish line is at the grandstands, and the race is shown on a large jumbotron. The races start at 2 pm, and go until about 11 pm, with a race every half hour. The horses are quite beautiful and run at a full gallop, not trotting or sulkies. The race is exciting, but the half hour between races is tedious. Glad we went, likely wouldn’t go again.

I didn't get to see and races, but you get to wander around the track and check out the facilities. Inside was full of slots it that is your thing. Across the street is the stadium for polo matches.

This is a very nice horse race track with a casino in the building. If you're a horse racing fan, this is a must visit place, especially if there is horse racing. The air conditioned restaurant serves good food and soft drinks (they don't serve alcohol here) and you can bet there. After dusk there is a real party atmosphere near the paddock area (you can get beer here). The building structures are amazing and the racing is great.
We went to the casino next day (there was no racing that day) and had fun. It is all electronic, but they do have electronic roulette and black jack.
If am in Buenos Airs I will definitely come back here.

If you enjoy racing then this is a fun afternoon. Also very inexpensive versus UK racecourses as entry is free. We upgraded to Owners and Trainers at the exorbitant cost of 50p each - so worth it to be in the main and glorious looking building.
We had the fortune to be offered a seat at a table by the trainer Daniel Adami and we had a most enjoyable afternoon/early evening.
No alcohol on sale but we were out for dinner in the evening so no issues. Food was good.

I’ve been on the couple of races. Everything is really perfect. You can see the horses very closely: before the races, on showing place, on the way to racetrack, even the racetrack itself is really close to the public. You can visit it free of charge or pay small amount for better place, but you have to be dressed accordingly.
I like it very much and will visit it in the future definitely.

What fun is this.
And the architectural building is spectacular.
Inspect the horses in their paddock before the race, have lunch in the clubhouse while placing your bets in air conditioned comfort.
