We stumbled upon Florida Garden Cafe while walking along Calle Florida and from the crowd inside decided we should try it for lunch. In this traditional Argentinian cafe, the atmosphere was upbeat, the service was friendly and efficient, and the sandwiches were tasty. The huge windows make it easy and fun to people watch on Calle Florida.

During a recent visit to BA for a family wedding we were based near this excellent cafe and it quickly became my favourite place to find sanctuary from the frenetic pace of the city. The white coated waiters are friendly and seem to take a real pride in delivering well prepared and tasty food with something of a flourish. Excellent... More

Have used this cafe on previous visits to BA and it maintains its traditional image. Food is good (great cheesecake), good service. If you need lunch, or a snack, it's a great place to drop in.

Over 50 years tradition. Being a tourist is a disadvantage at the Florida Garden. Being a local, you may find your friends, have a great coffe, had a Prosciutto and Tomato Pebete. excellent. Was a great experience. Hope next time to find my old friends. Do not expect great cuisine, but a quick lunch, the ambiance is great, Is a... More

Half an hour wait for a cup of hot chocolate. What more can I say. Oh yes, that the waiter really didn't seem to care. apart from that it is a classic place to go.

It's a great place. I've had coffee there dozens of mornings. I've never had a meal there, but I go for coffee and cookies or pastry at the stand-up counter.

The street is famous. It can be quite crowded sometimes but an important and interesting place to visit when in Buenos Aires. With a grand variety of stores, small shops, but not the best of Buenos Aires. Suggest not to make rate changes in this street. Not at all.

Great place. This is not the historical cafe where the writers used to hang out (that one is also good, but not in this neighborhood). This place is the quintessential "Porteno" coffee shop right on the Florida walking street. Great stand-up coffee bar, cookies, pastries, .... I have been there dozens of times. I love it.

I was enticed to go this place because of the review in Lonely Planet, to quote: '....was historically popular with politicians, artists and writers. In fact, Jorge Luis Borges and Pérez Célis (a famous Argentine painter) used to hang out here before the era of skinny lattes. The people-watching is excellent, both inside the café and out.' Well I thought... More

Staying in Retiro

Neighborhood Profile
Retiro
Exquisite palaces and luxurious apartment buildings combine with art galleries and exclusive boutiques to make Retiro the perfect spot for those who enjoy sophistication. However, the non-stop foot traffic to and from Retiro train and bus terminals, accompanied by the myriad of trucks leaving and arriving at the port, mean this neighborhood is never truly at rest. One minute you are walking down a street dotted with ornate mansions and luxurious shop windows and the next you find yourself surrounded by a sea of people racing to catch their train or bus. It is this juxtaposition of never-ending comings and goings and quiet, elegant luxury that defines Retiro, as well as Buenos Aires, a city where sharp contrasts are all around.
