The Sinagoga de la Congregación Israelita Argentina, also called Templo Libertad (because it is located on Libertad Street, near the famous Teatro Colon), is a beautiful synagogue situated in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The cornerstone of this synagogue was laid in 1897 and the construction of the building took 35 years; it was inaugurated in 1932.
The project was led by the engineers Alejandro Enquin and Eugenio Gantner.
The building's style has influences from German synagogues of the mid-XIX century. We were told that it has the capacity to seat 700 people and that it is the largest synagogue in South America and also the oldest.
We did not enter through the front door.
The synagogue is attached to a Jewish Museum and we had to present our passports and enter through a fortified entrance to the museum.
I do not think this synagogue is in regular use for services.
There is an organ over the Ark, similar to the organs I saw in synagogues in Hungary and Serbia, and there are concerts held in this synagogue now.

Synagogue of the Israelite Argentine Congregation (Sinagoga de la Congregación Israelita Argentina), also called Templo Libertad, is a Jewish synagogue situated on Libertad street, near the famous Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentine. It houses the Jewish history and culture museum in Argentine. Its construction was started by Jewish residents in Buenos Aires in 1897 and completed in 1932. It is the largest Synagogue in South America. It represents the third largest Jewish community of the world.
It was declared a National Historical Monument in 2000. In the center of concentric arches is a six-pointed Star of David. Hands placed on top of the entrance gate represent the blessing of the Priests of Jerusalem. The upper part of the Temple displays a representation of the Tablets of the Law with the Ten Commandments as described in the Book of Exodus.

My daughter and I received a warm welcome at the Templo. An English speaking guide showed us the beautiful sanctuary, explained the history of the building and answered our questions about the current Jewish community. The interior is reminiscent of German and French churches of the 19th century with its lovely stained glass windows and impressive organ. The acoustics are so good that musicians from the nearby Teatro Colon use the sanctuary as a rehearsal space. Weekly concerts are given on Wednesday afternoons (call for details). Bring your passport for entrance. Fee of $10 US or 170 Argentine pesos includes the Jewish Museum in the same building. The exterior of the building is being renovated and the main door on Libertad is not accessible. However you can enter through a smaller door. Call to confirm opening hours. When we were there, the Templo was open for visitors Tuesday through Thursday afternoons. It is open for services at other hours.

Such a warm and welcoming synagogue. You need to make arrangements to visit and bring your passport for entry, but so worth it. Loved the services with such a nice rabbi, hazan and congregants. Interior of the synagogue, which is the largest in South Ametica, is spectacular.

Located about one block from the Theater (number one attraction on TripAdvisor), this impressive facade – is as far as I got. I'd hoped to be allowed to at least peak inside but was sorely disappointed. Apparently, the sanctuary and the Jewish Museum next door seem to be open only from Tuesday-Thursday which makes sense but didn't work for my limited time in the city. The facade is worth a look though. But, if visiting the interior is going to make or break your trip, plan accordingly. Like most of the Jewish sites that I've visited across the world, security guards are not apt to be convinced to break any rules.
But seriously, I was a bit offended that I couldn't even visit a site associated with my own faith and was treated as a potential criminal when I wanted to visit. Too bad.
Don't even try to visit on a day other than Tues-Wed-Thurs.

The architecture of this synagogue is really amazing, but the best part of this Synagogue is the museum. Remember to bring your passport to enter. Museum has a small fee and is worth it. The best part is the wonderful gift shop with local judaica objects made by local craftsman

Your physical passport is needed for entrance. Check for tour times. Included is the Museo Judeo, with the history of Jews in Argentina. Impressive sanctuary. Small gift shop (better selection in Abasto Jewish section of town).

Buenos Aires is the home to the largest Jewish community in Latin America .
In a Jewish tour you must visit the Synagogue of the Jewish Congregation of Argentine Republic.
CIRA in spanish.
Temples, schools, cultural centers, restaurants and bakeries are in different neighborhoods.

We were struck by the scale and design of this building as we walked past to see Teatro Colon. It is the largest synagogue in South America; how curious that Eichmann and other Nazi war criminals hid out in Buenos Aires after the war! Nice park right across the street.
