The area

Address
Neighborhood: San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.

Unbelievable marketplace ensconced in old area of Buenos Aires. You just don’t know where to look first. Antiques, clothing , rare spices, meats , vegetables and clothing are just a list of items to be found I. Stalls in This historical marketplace. A great stop on our city tour.

    Almost 150 years of history
Wandering around San Telmo district is in itself a pool of discoveries; Defensa Street offers a variety of styles, varied architecture, galleries and expressions of art of all kinds, even better on Sundays. One block away from the street, San Telmo old market is a gem, with genuine kiosks and shops offering typical food (a bit overpriced but still), antique items and souvenirs. Most tourists tend to stick to Defense Street and would miss this market.

Blocks and blocks and blocks of outdoor market, good food in interior market
Such fun! We met friends over in the San Telmo neighborhood and ended up spending hours exploring the weekend market. The neighborhood, one of the oldest in Buenos Aires, is cool, with beautiful streets and interesting architecture. The main indoor market has tons of food options and a few shops. It is EXTREMELY crowded, so bring your patience. But it’s cool to walk through and has a great energy. While some of the vendors are a little junky, some are cool. The streets surrounding the outdoor market spill on for blocks and blocks and blocks with vendors selling all kinds of wares—again, a mix of some junky stuff and some cool stuff. There are a lot of antique vendors selling all kinds of glassware, silver, etc. And there’s a lot of vendors selling fresh-squeezed orange juice, which you should definitely buy (it was delicious). It happened to be beautiful weather, which made it all the more fun. A really great afternoon while in Buenos Aires.

    Often overcrowded on weekends
Although weekends are the busiest, some vendors only open their stalls for weekend shoppers. All types of foods and goods are sold, including some antiquities, the majority of which I consider overpriced. The foods served are generally very good. There are always some interesting items to consider buying.

    Good Market Experience
I just wish we had of found this place earlier in our visit? As it was, we only had time to scratch the surface on what was on offer in the market. Heaps of food sources & bars with all the other market offerings, from meat, vegies, vinyl records to curios! Absolutely packed on our visit and a very popular spot for locals & tourists. Make sure you give yourselves time to enjoy this place. Been going since 1897 and easy to see why!

    Buenos Aires Market
Market street and a very crowded place. Lots of people walking around, have to be careful about your belongings. The market is amazing and good place to visit, also a lot of local shops on the streets to get lots of souvenirs

This small opening leads to a corridor that then opens into a huge indoor market. Inside, there are many shops, cafes, fruit stalls and outlet selling art and music. A wonderful market that is open each day.

Great visit! The place is a Mercadão of Buenos Aires, with local food (chorizo, empanadas, meats etc) and very full. We found a restaurant called Founda which had a very good price and we could sit down to eat and had table service. We were attended by Paloma who was very attentive, and helped us a lot, mainly because we did not speak much Spanish and she was extremely patient. We ordered a meat with fries, wine, soda, empanada and the price was about 120 reais for 4 people.

Bad experience, sock seller who entered the market wanted to attack my son and almost caused a commotion inside the market as there were 3 men and my wife and they thought my son was alone. It was a shouting match, almost a fight, there was no security and no one interfered, in other words, we were with our family in an old neighborhood in Buenos Aires and we were insulted by a crazy person who wanted to attack us. I will never step foot in this neighborhood again. At the San Telmo market we went to a restaurant where after 2 hours they apologized because they forgot our order. The rest of Buenos Aires was wonderful

Amazing choice. One of the best market places I’ve been to (including those from Montevideo, Santiago, Barcelona and Madrid). Dozens of eating spots of all types, antique shops, meat stores, pastries, empanadas, cafe, fruits, veggies… wonderful experience worth visiting for at least a couple of hours if not more !!

Warning and I communicate if you want to go to this market choose not to go on the weekends because it is so full but so full that the experience becomes HORRIBLE as it did in my case. Leaving the Antiquities Fair in San Telmo on Sunday and we went to the market to eat the famous empanadas of El Honero. But when we arrived there was so many but so many people that did not walk right, did not understand where the queue of the empanada begins, there was no place to sit, there was an absurd heat. My experience was not good. We took the empanadas for a trip and tried to arrange a place to sit and eat them but we couldn't find the part that the communal tables were so full, then we sat in a small bench right inside, pretty much, we ate and went out. No desire to look at anything else I had.

The Mercado de San Telmo has many interesting shops. There are antiques, dulce de leche shops, clothing, food, good coffee, wine shops, etc. Many elements or Argentina's culture are centered here. You could be here 3 - 4 hours easily, however, on weekends it was really crowded.

Took a Uber to the market around 6pm , look around inside the market, most restaurants were closed, some didn’t look like they have never open for longtime. It didn’t look quite hygienic, looking for place to eat . 10min look around and when outside, didn’t look safe . Called Uber back to hotel.

The Sunday market at San Telmo is busy with lots of people enjoying a day out. Good for people watching. Interesting old buildings and cobbled streets. Lots of vendors with a variety of wares—mostly small antiques and knitwear. If you are looking for art, better head to the Recoleta Sunday market or to La Boca instead.

I visited San Telmo several times but this time I discovered the Market! The truth is I was surprised, a super picturesque place, with many people, foreign and national tourists! In this place, butcher shops, bakeries, etc. coexist with shops selling paintings, antiques, breweries, restaurants, and tea houses. Even if you don't sit down to drink and/or eat, it is worth visiting! It has been in operation since 1897, I totally recommend going!

What a picturesque place in Buenos Aires! Seeing its shops or eating in this place is quite an experience; You can find everything, there are many antique shops that offer you objects that are true works of art. And you can eat in its many restaurants.
