Colonia Uruguay Equestrian and Historical Day Trip, (the trip most of the rave reviews are about!) only a short 1 hour ferry trip Buenos Aires this is the best way to get the most out of your day trip to Colonia Del Sacramento ,as you get an optional short city tour and walking of the historical quarter by a local private guide and a 2-3 hour countryside tour on horseback through the farmlands to the beautiful deserted beaches only 15 minutes from the center, followed by a delicious bbq lunch at a traditional Uruguayan grill house . I meet you at the port, bus station or your hotel and am with you the whole day in Colonia. I look forward to sharing my passion and this unique horse culture with you.

Having ridden horses many times before throughout our travels, Buenos Aires Horse Adventures trip caught our eye as a great way of spending the day in Uruguay during our stay in Buenos Aires.

I contacted David, the owner and guide of Buenos Aires Horse Adventures just a couple a days before we wanted to do the trip. He promptly returned my email and met with us at our hotel to make all the arrangements for securing the ferry tickets, immigration info and discussed what the ride entailed including options for taking a tour of Colonia after the ride and the return ferry to Buenos Aires.

On the morning of the ride, David met us at the ferry terminal with tickets in hand. Being that this was the start Carnival weekend as well as Valentine's weekend, he had to pull some strings with his connections at the ferry company in order to get us on the ferry at the last minute.

He mentioned that he had never seen the ferry terminal so crowded before which in turn delayed our departure for over an hour. Once we arrived in Uruguay (and met the third rider on our tour), the car David had secured to take us from the ferry to the ranch had been given away because we were late. David scrambled to secure another car (I'm sure at a higher cost to him given the demand that weekend), and after another delay, we were off to the ranch.

When we arrived (approximately 30 minute ride from the ferry), the horses were saddled and ready to go. The website does state that this ride isn't really suited for people with no riding experience but again, we've risen many times in the past but what we came to realize, and rather quickly, is all that we ever did on our previous rides was to "walk" on horseback.

Almost from the start of the ride, David has you trotting and even cantering through grass fields and up hills. This is not a leisurely walk on a trail. While our true inexperience showed itself rather quickly, David, as well as our other rider (who happened to be a competitive rider during her childhood), were great in instructing us how to sit up in the saddle and use the reins and stirrups when trotting and cantering.

The highlight of the ride was on the beach. The horses love running along and even into the water. This is something friends of mine who have been riding regularly for years have never had the opportunity to do. You literally have the beach all to yourself.

After our time at the beach and another ride through the countryside, we arrived at another ranch for a prearranged lunch. However, because we were so late, they had given up on us too. No worries though, David arranged an even better lunch at a great restaurant in Colonia called Buen Suspiro, which is owned by the son of the ranch owner. The food and the restaurant itself were fantastic.

While all the delays were completely outside of David's control (and something he said he's never experienced before), he did a great job at improvising and taking care of what he needed to be done in order to make sure we had a great time and that's exactly what we had.

Again, this is not your typical resort style or "dude ranch" type of ride. If you've never been on horseback for 3-4 hours straight and have never trotted or cantered over fairly long stretches, this may not be the ride for you (I'm still feeling the burn in my legs and butt 4 days later). But if you do go, you'll experience a ride like no other you'll find anywhere in the states on beautifully trained and cared for horses,

Thank you for the great review, it was a hell of a day but as you mentioned , nothing can take away the magic of this excursion. We are very fortunate to have such a beautiful location only 12km from the city center with perfect countryside for riding and the deserted beach which offers safe options for a good gallop or a great place to try it for the first time; combined with our well trained horses and very experienced guides, it is the perfect recipe for pure enjoyment. Both our farm restaurant and historical village venue are owned by a renowned Uruguayan family and their homemade, homegrown delights never fail to satisfy all clients with also vegetarian options available. I hope to meet you and your friends in the not too distant future on another of our horse adventures.

Just a fantastic day out. Have been staying in BA. I’m an experienced rider and booked a day trip with David. He gives very clear instructions and can book return ferry tickets for you. His instructions were very useful. Gave estimate of transit time to ferry from my flat. Met me as planned at ferry terminal in Colonia.

He has a small number of horses( about 8) that he has trained for hacking purposes. Horses are used part time for rides and part time for ranching. He works with local Uruguayan ranchers who look after the horses very well. The horses were in very good condition. Clearly well fed, fit and cared for.

We were a small group of 5 : mix of complete beginners and grades of experience in riding. David was our guide and spent time helping the beginners and chatting to the better riders. He had help from his gaucho to lead rein and guide the less capable riders in our group . Our 2/3 hr hack was through the most beautiful Uruguayan countryside and ended with the opportunity for a full on gallop on the beach. The riding experience was truly magical. Throughout David was chatty and pointed out landscape features whilst keeping an eye on other riders to make sure they were safe.

Afterwards he took us for a quick wash then onto the restaurant in Colonia. We had a wonderful buffet meal with plenty of salads meat Dessert and wine. All was included in price if the tour.

We then had an hours guided tour from a very nice local lady guide. She took us through the old town explaining the colonial history and architecture.

David then accompanied us back to the ferry terminal to make sure we checked in ok.

All in all a wonderful event and well worth the money.

I would consider booking an overnight stay as Colonia is delightful. A lovely quiet resort but directly on the beach. There are some very quaint hotels in the middle of the old town. They looked very suitable for an overnight stop but as I didn’t do this I can’t comment about facilities etc.

We used the Buscebus ferry which I understand is a bit more expensive but better than the Colonia express .

Wonderful trip. Will be back to Colonia and Uruguay again !!

We had a long (five hour ride) through the countryside and along the beach. it was great fun. We stopped for lunch at a delightful little parrilla. It was winter so it was specially opened for us, and we had a lovely lunch consisting of a type of cheese lasagna made with crepes instead of noodles. Unique and delicious. If you want to take an overnight trip from Buenos Aires to Colonia, I would recommend that you take the time for a ride, in addition to touring Colonia.

Thank you for your review; As charming and interesting Colonia is, the tours on offer are only of the town and historical sights; this is the reason i included this horse riding excursion to show also the beautiful countryside and deserted beaches near the city. So to get the most out of your day trip or overnight stay, don't miss this memorable ride , city tour and traditional lunch at our farm restaurant. As the beach ride is a minimum of 3 hours, i suggest that it is not suitable for first time riders unless you are in very good physical shape and up for the adventure!

We tried getting hold Of this mythical tour since we arrived in Buenos Aires on Monday to no avail!
No one picks up the phone, I even had our concierge call all day on the hour, every hour.
I even went to visit the address listed on Mexico St. No such business.. -:(
I bought my 12 year old daughter and I colonia day tour and resigned ourselves to a walking tour instead which bumped her our. She actually told me she was mad at this David.. I said she didn't even know him, but she was right to be disappointed.

Buenos Aires Horse Adventures is very real and nothing mythical about it whatsoever. As per my web page under Latest updates I clearly state that phone enquiries are only available in the evenings from 19.00h - 22.00 h due yo the fact that I participate in all my excursions and having to answer the phone on horseback is difficult and unsafe; also in the countryside where all of our activities are located there is often limited access; however, i never received any missed calls from any unknown numbers in the time period mentioned. Normal reservation procedure is via the internet and I received no email whatsoever requesting information or reservation from this client; the only email i received was an exact copy of this review a few days ago with the clients complaint , which I replied immediately with the above answers. Many of my previous reviews and emails compliment me on my prompt response and good communication , therefore as much as I dislike bad reviews, I do not think this one was justified.

I went on the day trip to Colonias de Sacramento with 2 other friends. David was a very accommodating host and even met with us before booking the trip at our hostel to discuss what we would do and what days would offer us the best experience.
After taking the ferry to Colonias we took a tour of the historical center guided by David's friend who was super nice and knowledgeable on the history and architecture of the buildings surrounding us, as well as the history of Uruguay as a whole.
After, we rode the horses (who were all very obedient and well behaved) for 2 hours from a farm to the beach. David was a very good teacher. Having never ridden before, I wasn't sure how far I would be able to go and was ecstatic that we were able to reach a full gallop for short periods of time along the shoreline.
This trip was an unforgettable experience for any horse lover or adventurous soul.

My husband and I met up with David in Colonia (which was a fantastic town within which to spend a few days), and drove to the horse ranch where we jumped on the most wonderful, responsive, lively Criollo horses we could have hoped for. David took care of all details and we got to simply enjoy! The ride through the countryside was amazing and when we arrived at the (river) beach we got to gallop. The horses were super energetic and responsive, and David gave great advice about riding. After we got our fill on horseback, David brought us to a farmhouse for a totally locally grown/raised lunch. Freshly prepared meat, cheeses, vegetable tarts and cold crisp beers. And there was more! After several hours of riding and eating our fill, David had arranged for us to have an excellent and intimate tour of historic Colonia by a knowledgeable local woman who spoke great English and told us the kinds of details about Colonia that we never would have learned on our own.
Bottom line, we are so lucky that we found David online and booked this trip! He is a joy to deal with, super responsive to emails, and really knows how to make an extraordinarily special day.

It seems that everyone has written a rave review, and rightly so. It's an awesome trip.

First, David was very attentive to even my first email questioning the trip and what was included. For example, how to get out to Colonia, details on experience levels, etc. He always was prompt to respond and was super informative. Friendly. Never did I feel like my endless questions were putting him out. He also went out of his way to make sure the little details were taken care of, like checking weather. This is very important when one will be outdoors for 4+ hours.

Having lived in Argentina for around 2 years, I have seen and heard about many "gaucho trips" involving horses. I have visited a few. I have heard many stories of others. Many of the estancias offer a bit of horse back riding, and that is fine for people who just want to plop around for 30 minutes and experience a very touristy vibe. But I wanted to find something unique; I wanted more of a challenge, more of a ride. I wanted horse country.

David's trip is completely different and offered exactly I was looking for. This trip is for horse people and is run by expert horse people who obviously love what they do. The horses are so well cared for and trained. No one wants to go and ride horses that seem to only be there for a human profit. This is SO not the case. If I were a horse, I would would want to live there and with those care takers. I want to live there now. Its gorgeous. Its quiet. And its the ride of your life.

Its a long ride. It starts country and scenic, long and winding roads, and scenery all around. Absolutely no cars or industry anywhere. This is a treat for people who live in the city and experience noise and chaos on a daily basis.

The land is owned by a few families and is untouched. Then you come down to the end of the country road and hit the beach, miles of beach. It really feels like your private beach. This is where you can take your newly bonded horse friend and have some fun. David makes sure to let you know that you can ride at whatever pace you want, and how you want. No pressure. If you want to ride slow and steady, you can. If you want to go fast and gallop, you can. It's all very laid back but you also feel safe being with someone who has obviously been around horses his entire life. I enjoyed chatting with David the whole time, but if you are not much of a talker, you can head up to the front of the line with an actual Gaucho and just ride, no talking, unless you want. Like I said, its YOUR trip and that's what I loved. You get a real horse ride, with the best people possible and you make it the way you want. I would like to note, I am a safety first kind of rider and person, and I was always welcomed with my questions. If you choose to ride with a helmet, you can. This is NOT the case at most riding tours in Argentina. I chose to wear a helmet, but others on the trip opted not to. Again, its your choice and no one makes you feel insecure about any of your decisions.

After the ride, you head back to a little farm, grab a bite eat and some wine, chit chat, and just relax. It's people who actually live on the farms and they make you delicious food, perfect.

This trip is for nature lovers, adventure seekers, who want to actually ride and experience real life. Its not for the faint of heart. But the horse life never is!

Buenos aires horse adventures is an amazing experience I would recommend to anyone looking to have a once In a lifetime horseback riding experience in South America! My tour was in beautiful Colonia on an extremely well trained horse named gaucho. We rode through marvelous countryside for hours until we reached a private beach. We galloped and walked through the beach with majestic views at every turn. David was a pleasure to talk to and made our travel plans to Colonia extremely easy. He met us for breakfast one morning and even helped us with travel plans and directions! He was amazing and really went above and beyond for us. When in Colonia, we had a fabulous ride with scenic views and later had an incredible lunch at a restaurant with locally sourced foods. No trip to Colonia/buenos aires is complete without this awesome experience!! Thank you David for an unforgettable day!

David was very communicative from the start when I first contacted him from England. He also replied promptly to my e-mails and kept in touch before I came to Argentina.

I decided to book the ferry myself and meet David in the ferry terminal in Colonia. He arrived just after us and we were taken to the ranch by car. From the beginning he made me feel comfortable. I was with my 10 year old son, who had been learning to ride but was a little unsure about the different style of riding.

It was obvious that David has a lot of experience with all different levels of riders. My son was a little nervous for the first 10 minutes, as he wanted to ride 'Western Style' correctly and was scared of making a mistake. David made him feel relaxed and let him know that he didn't have to be so strict with himself.

The horses were extremely responsive and well treated, so were a delight to ride. They seemed more responsive and comfortable to ride than some pony trekking horses in the UK can be.

We loved the countryside through which we rode and it was great for me that we didn't just walk along slowly. I felt that the horses walked with more enthusiasm and at a quicker pace than some on treks in the UK, which I thought was great. We had a good opportunity to canter and trot a lot.

Obviously the highlight was cantering/galloping on the beach, which was one of the main reason I chose this trip. My son particularly loved the speed on the beach and once again David made him feel very confident to go as fast as he liked, even though he had never ridden at that speed before. I also felt confident leaving him to ride alongside my son.

The only thing I could possibly say is that we both would have liked slightly longer on the horses, as it wasn't as long as I had expected. However, I also understand that it is hard to judge how long the ride will take and, as we were only two people, it may have been quicker than with a larger group. I particularly would have liked a little more time cantering on the beach, mainly because it was such fun and I would't have wanted to stop anyway.

After the ride, we went to a lovely restaurant, where the food was very tasty. It is difficult to eat vegetarian food in this part of the world and, as promised, we got just the food that we like. The restaurant itself was also lovely.

David took us around Colonia, as there was no guide available at that time. However, I was happy to just go around with him, as I am not a person that is used to being guided and it felt more personal.

We would definitely join David again on our next trip, maybe next time we would like more than one ride.

Thank you for your kind review; you guys were a real pleasure to have on the adventure, you Tania are a modestly competent rider and your well balanced and talented 10 year old son has a great future as a rider, I believe he will no longer enjoy his riding school lessons back in the UK after this experience ! I look forward to your next visit. Best regards.

I went on a great horse riding trip in Uruguay with David! The day started early in the morning, where David accompanied me on the ferry from Buenos Aires to Colonia, Uruguay. Here we were picked up and brought to a tipical ranch. We had a beautiful ride through the country side, whereafter we arrived on the beach where we could gallop and enjoy the beautiful scenery. After riding back through the country side again, we were welcomed at a home restaurant with an authentic lunch. After some relaxing we were brought back to Colonia, where we visited the village.

The typical South-American horses and equipment are taken care of very well and look great! It was possible to walk, trot and gallop at our own pace. This trip is a great adventure for the experienced rider and offers real horseriding (no touristic easy paced tour). David is a very professional guide and was able to explain me many things about the South-American riding style, which was great and very interesting! I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants a great day out from Buenos Aires and wants to experience adventurous horse riding.

Thanks again David!
