Neighborhood: San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.

We had about an hour to kill in San Telmo so we went to the Museo Histórico Nacional. Our English speaking tour guide Flor was very pleasant and she had a deep understanding of the revolutionary history of South America and Argentina. We even saw the changing of the grenadier guards in front of San Martín’s sword. The museum is full of authentic pieces not replicas. Free museum and free tour. Gift shop was pretty small. Also, big soccer exhibit. Definitely worth a look!

We didn’t read any reviews before going here because we just stumbled on it, so we didn’t realise there was no English information, and we could access the English downloads on the go since we hadn’t prepared in advance. So if you’re able to do that, then maybe you would get more out of this. My Spanish is OK so I was able to translate most stuff for my partner, but still not an ideal way to tour a museum. Also the museum is about two thirds football and only one third Argentine history! Obviously they are (justifiably) proud of their football, but it wasn’t what I expected. My partner was happy though :) I would have liked more of the country’s history, personally. Anyway, it’s a free museum in a beautiful building, so I’d say it’s worth a visit, but if your Spanish is anything less than fluent, then you’ll get more out of it if you prepare in advance and download the translations.

I enjoyed my visit to this museum very much. Since I speak Spanish, I had no problem reading the exhibit labels. If you want English translations, you can either use a phone app or download the translations from their website. The one thing that annoyed me was that they change their hours. I looked up their hours in about four weeks prior to my visit and the website said the museum was open until 9 p.m. on Fridays. I was disappointed that the hours had changed by the time I visited in March and they closed at 7 p.m. Thus I was unable to see all of the exhibits.
I did enjoy a special exhibit on Futbol, which featured both Diego Maradona and Leonel Messi. The exhibit of Argentina's Greatest Hits is a must see. It featured many important items in Argentina's history. There is a lot to see and enjoy in this museum.

The museum is myopically focused on a seemingly brief period of Argentina history for the most part, and the walk through is not even close to chronological, so it's tough to keep up. The descriptions are almost all exclusively in Spanish with no audio option for other languages, which is somewhat shocking in a big city like Buenos Aires. We did our best to read them with our Spanish skills, but it was overall a boring and exhausting experience, unfortunately.

Small museum but with interesting objects from Argentine history. It is free and open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. From the San Telmo neighborhood you can walk about 5 blocks south (Plaza Lezama) and you will reach the museum. You can see General San Martín's saber, the Potosí plaque and the liberators' locker rooms.

The museum covers the tumultuous period between the independence war, separation between Chile and Argentina negotiated by San Marti and Bolivar, and unification of quasi-independent provinces into a federal republic. Lots of uniforms and swords, but also an interesting native Indio section. Well worth the visit.

Great value to enter. You scan a code to get the English text on your phone. Great exhibits and some beautiful art. I learnt a lot about Argentina and the Martin Sword is pretty cool.

We were very exited to visit this museum and learn about Argentina's history but it was a total disappointment. Everything is written in Spanish. No translation whatsoever. Not even the audio guides. We tried asking for a guide even if we had to pay an extra fee but even the guide only speaks spanish :(
