Over a few years of traveling back and forth from NYC I have stayed in this neighborhood at least three times for more than one or two months. Why? Transport is easy, the Esquina de Gardel is nearby, and Azucar, a salsa studio is here. Also rental prices for apartments are very reasonable. Shopping at Abasto, so-so. And, yes, the neighborhood can be a little seedy at night, so leave your Rolex and diamond necklace at home.

Not tourist friendly! It used to be a really nice area but nowadays is a very unsafe neighborhood. The shopping is nice but nothing else. If you want to go to the Carlos Gardel alley, book a tourist guide or a tour. Don't go on your own!

just another shopping mall in one of the less desirable barrios. There are many nicer, better located, and more upscale shopping malls. It does have a decent cinema. It is a teen hangout, and if you arrive by taxi you are forced to give your "door opener" a tip. We used to find this irritating, especially if you don't have any coins or small bills, but it is a common practice and on gets accustomed to this...

Expensive awful looking buildings mixed with very nice looking old houses. Tango breathes at every corner of this area at night, and visiting Gardel´s house was a pleasure :)

If you like Tango you must visit.

Take a picture with Carlos Gardel (most famous Tango singer)

You can also visit the Once Mall to buy something from Buenos Aires.

Even though there is a major shopping centre in the area, it's also full of squatters. Don't walk around here at night in particular!

The shooping has good brands and prices. The Hoyts cinema is OK but when you get out of the building, late in the night you have to be careful and watchfull. There are kids staring at your purse and bag all the time. Not to mention that I have seen one of them trying to grab a girl´s mobile while she was talking. Just enjoy the neighbour!! but try to be carefull, there many robberies in the neighbouhood

The neighbourhood surrounding Abasto shopping is fun to visit during the day, at night it can get pretty funky. I've seen arrests there and a woman travelling with us had her gold chain snatched from her neck. It is best to visit it during the weekend too when there are less people rushing on sidewalks. There are lots of colorful painted houses, even one with the music of Volver a famous Gardel song. there are small markets, small boutiques and restaurants. On Anchorena street, right beside the Abasto shopping centre there are many boutiques selling tango shoes and clothes. There is the Carlos Gardel Museum-House at 775 Jean Jaures just 3 blocks from Abasto shopping. Avenue Corrientes in that part of town has modern restaurants, a drugstore, newspaper stands, flower stands and change bureaus.

I went to Abasto to visit the Ticketek kiosk in the mall. I then walked around the Jewish part of the neighborhood, stopped in a great Judaica store and then had lunch. Not really worth a special trip.

The streets are littered and crowded with rather unpleasant looking people, there are no buildings of architectural value, with the exception of the Abasto Shopping Centre
