This was my second visit to the Tomar Synagogue-- first was 2019. For those interested in / or curious about Jewish history, it is worth a visit.
Still no minyan, so functions can only be performed under strict regulations and with a visiting Rabbi.
Perhaps.... one day.

A must see in Tomar. Try to visit the synagogue immediately before or after the Convent of the Order of Christ to get a full perspective on the plight of the Jewish people in Portugal during the 15th century. Simply a one-room place of worship, there is nothing grand nor elaborate about the synagogue - a stark difference to the cathedrals and palaces that dot the country. The visit is free and if you have some loose coins in your pocket, the lovely woman who tends to this building would be most grateful for your donation (which will go to maintaining the building). An important site to visit and commemorate the people who fled their homes and their synagogue due to religious persecution.

I'm glad we took the time to see Tomar's synagogue, which dates back to the 15th century. Entry is free. We were lucky to be given a quick guided tour by Jamie who is clearly very enthusiastic (and multi-lingual). The tour included part of the building next door where the baths were located - you can see the excavations. Even without the 10 minute tour (which was very interesting), there is enough to see in the synagogue to make it worth a quick stop. Around the edge of the room are Jewish tombstones, which show that there has been a Jewish presence in Portugal from the 8th century onwards as one piece dates back to the time of the visigoths. Women would not have been allowed to worship in the same room as the men - look up the wall opposite the entrance and you will see a small window - the women had to pray from behind there. Do take the time out to see this place. NB Lonely Planet says it is open to 1900 but it closes at 1700.

This is a small Museum, which was once the Jewish place of worship in Tomar. It has the reputation of being the the oldest surviving Synagogue in Portugal, having been built in the early 15th Century. You can find it in one of the cobbled streets, Rua Dr. Joaquim Jacinto, just a short walk away from the Praça da Replica. Inside you can see the 4 columns representing the 4 mothers of Israel, the arches symbolising the 12 tribes and various historical exhibits from the Jewish presence in Tomar and Portugal.

When you enter, you can think that it is almost with nothing. But (if you know portuguese) if you talk with the lady there, she will tell you the story of her husband and her, and how they fight to have that space know open to the public.
Is the older synagogue in Portugal, and it was closed for a very long period of time. We have to value the people that are there gaining nothing, just trying to have that space open.

Fascinating and disturbing portrait of the Jewish people of Portugal prior to the Inquisition. The museum is located within the Synagogue of Tomar. Although limited, the artefacts on display speak volumes. Be sure to see the partially excavated mikvah (ritual purification bath) adjacent to the museum. The museum's volunteer caretaker Teresa Vasco provides a small pamphlet (in several languages) about the museum and the history of the synagogue.

The highlight of this site was the tour that the docent Jamie gave us. The synagogue is one room with some interesting donated artifacts and some ruins that are being slowly preserved in an adjacent room. Jamie informed us of the jewish history in Tomar and Portugal in general which was very interesting. He spent nearly an hour with us and explained everything.

Jewish fans of this medieval synagogue in Tomar have paid for improvements and it's a better experience than it was on my first visit several years back. This was the synagogue for Tomar's Jews in the Middle Ages but then along came the Inquisition. The curator told me that thirteen Jews were burned at the stake in the 16th century in the main square of Tomar. The synagogue became a church, prison and warehouse. Happily, it's now a synagogue again - but there are apparently only two Jewish families left in the town.

A terrific little collection of old Jewish artifacts, but the real star of this attraction is the building itself from the 15th century. The attendant is an enthusiastic guide back in time and do buy a post card or two to help support the costs of keeping the museum open. Also, be sure to have lunch down the block at Alminhas which I wrote up in the restaurant review section.

In town of Tomar, it's well worth visiting for the historical perspective of the Jewish experience in 15th century Portugal
