Built in the mid 16th century, it is the oldest synagogue in existence in Portugal. Although, today it is a museum. When built there was a sizeable Jewish population but today only a handful exist.
Not easy to find since it is a side street but there is a sin on the main street.

This very small synagogue, that is kept by the members of one of the 2 Jewish families that still live in Tomar, dates back to the 15th century, when Jews had to leave Portugal in order not to convert their religion. Very moving peace of history! don't miss if you are in Tomar!

The town of Tomar is very small and this synagogue is less than 2 minutes walking from the main square so if you're in Tomar, don't miss visiting it!

The only synagogue in Tomar kept from the past of over 400 years ago. You really get the feeling when you enter the Synagogue of being in a very special place.

It is a small synagogue in the historical centre of the town of Tomar. A lady was in there and spoke to us about the history of the building and showed us some of the presents on display there, that they received from various people/institutions from all over the world. The entrance is free

This small synagogue is well worth a visit. Over the years it has had many uses and the history is fascinating. The acoustics inside are amazing.

The synagogue in Tomar was in use in the 13th century and after the expulsion of the Jews from Portugal in 1496 it went through many different functions as storage house, city prison and church. Today it has been restored and is a synagogue with the main symbols present in the synagogue room and next door is the remains of the ritual bath. It was very moving to visit this old synagogue and know that also here there were Jewish worship even if it was a long time ago. If in Tomar not to be missed and free.

We had hoped to see this, but it's all under wraps. There are some items on display at the Cultural Centre, but that was closed the day we were there so we didn't get to see anything of the Jewish presence in Tomar. At least they are taking care of the place, so hopefully when it does reopen it will be in a good state of repair.

Very moving experience, the caretakers gave us an informative description of the history of the site, which last served the community until the Inquisition of 1497. Historic artifacts of the Portuguese Jewish community of the day. Making worthy attempts to revive the site. Important visit!

I know the synagouge was closed for restoration for a long period of time, and they had a small exhibition somewhere else.
Is the original location open for visits now?
Thank you,
Written May 15, 2019
Hello. Yes, the original site is now open for visits and the work inside has been completed. I imagine it will be closed on Mondays (so many places are in Tomar). Sorry for the delay replying. Enjoy your visit!

How do we reach the people in charge. Do you need reservation to enter?
Written January 27, 2018
No need for advance reservation. There is a volonteer present during visiting hours who can be of some assistance if you overcome the language barrier...

Will the synagogue be open in March 10-13, 2018. Someone mentioned repairs in December 2017. We will not have a car, is it difficult to reach the synagogue by walking?
Written December 20, 2017
The synagogue is easily accesible by walking.
I would not know their schedule.
Best to contact them directly for this type of information.
Good luck, and enjoy!
