- EC13091Ellicott City, Maryland1,562 contributionsEnjoy these ruinsThe castle is basically in ruins and thus not as complete as the adjacent Convento do Cristo. It’s worth a brief visit but don’t come to Tomar planning a lengthy visit here. Make it a part of your visit to the Convento do Cristo and you’ll feel satisfied.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 6, 2023
- noelx4Halifax, Canada1,272 contributionsWonderful one of a kind site.Absolutely amazing site. The Templar church was definitely the highlight. So intensely covered with paintings and statuary, very unusual. The monestary was surprisingly interesting, in large part because it was well signed. It doesn't take much to tell English speakers the significance of what they are looking at, and I very much appreciated it.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 4, 2023
- Margie CFredonia, New York6 contributionsNot to be missed !We visited Tomar castle as part of a tour with Jump in Tours. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting castles I have seen on my many European adventures. I. highly recommend it and our guide António.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 24, 2024
- irene, leedsLeeds, United Kingdom65 contributionsLovely place. Some nice coffee bars and places to eat. Not over busy which was a bonus. Worth the journey from Lisbon.Worth the train journey from Lisbon. Great afternoon out. We went to the tourist office and got a map of all there was to see, the young people were very good at pointing out places to visit, although they could have been a bit more enthusiastic. But the map was fairly easy to follow.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 1, 2024
- MemoChicago, Illinois149 contributionsDo not miss thisThe Knights Templar, the Portuguese version anyway, is encapsulated in this historic 11 acre spot. Multiple cloisters within these ancient walls, a sanctuary recreated from Jerusalem. The Manueline Window impressive bat first viewing but absolutely spectacular on closer inspection. Travelers that follow my reviews know I’m seldom at a lost for words but I’m stymied in this magnificent place.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 11, 2024

The “Castelo de Tomar”, is located in the parish of São João Baptista, in the city of Tomar. It integrates the great architectural ensemble of the Convento de Cristo. The Templar castle on the right bank of the river Nabão, integrated, at the time of the Reconquista, the so-called Linha do Tejo, along with others in the region that follow its style: those of Almourol, Idanha, Monsanto, Pombal and Zêzere. A real nice location to visit, you have enough parking for free and to pay for, there is also a café to have some drink or pie at the free parking place.

Our visit was short, getting there at 2PM. This one was even shorter, We got there after 4PM. When we got to entrance to chapel, it was closed due to reovations. WE walked around some and couldn't find a way in. We were close to giving up.Finally, we asked someone and they said we had to go around the back. It took some doing to find it, time we did not have, at this point, but we finally got in. We made a beeline to the chapel, which was darker, probably because it was around 5PM, late september and it was extremely overcast with clouds. It was less impressive than I remembered it, but it was still impressive with its central portion with large arched columns and painted ceiling. The surrounding walls had some murals, too. The one good thing this time was that there were a huge number of people there because there was a big festival on the grounds with knights jousting and exhibtits and such and this time there were only a hnadful of people there. So it was much easier to take pictures and videos. Unfortunately, gettiing in so late, we had very little time in the monsatery which is very neat and no time to walk the wonderful grounds and walls with their views. We screwed up once again in getting out late and arriving late. We paid this price many times on this and previous trips. The hazards of traveling when you are old and have health conditions. My two recomendations: visit here and travel when you are young and healthy. Don't wait until the difficulties almost overwhelm the joy.

The convent was founded by the Templar Knights and in this castle they resisted the siege of the Moors. With the dissolution of the Templar order, the seat of the former Knights Templar was converted into the seat of the new order of the Military Order of Christ which significantly enlarged the castle. The long period of construction and expansion have resulted in the fact that here there are examples of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance architectural styles. Given its vastness and the presence of interesting and different sectors, the visit takes at least 2-3 hours during which there are endless ideas for photos. Definitely not to be missed for anyone visiting the central part of Portugal.

The Convento de Cristo and Castelo de Tomar is under renovations until July 2023 (?). So alot of the accesses and items are restricted and cannot be seen - even the gorgeous window in Manuelino style is hidden. It seems the restoration process is going slowly, as is moist and mold everywhere. Did not put terrible, because I already visited in its full charm and know is one of the best places in Tomar.

Fantastic castelo experience, stunning architecture, and carvings, lovely gardens and convent to look around. The aquedtuo runs all the way into the convent.
The whole area is steeped in history and a must if you are in Central Portugal.
We decided not to go into the castelo interior as there was plenty to look around the grounds and photograph the exterior aspects (There was no charge for grounds only)
Well worth a visit

The castle is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It is situated on a hill just over the city of Tomar. The most interesting thing is the number of cloisters (6) that find place in this structure. There is also a very big refectory with two pulpits. Don't miss the world- renowned manuelin window

The convent and castle is massive! There are several paid parking locations near the convent area where you buy the tickets to see the inside. It costs 6euro each. There were no guides available Guide books were 1 euro so being some change. So not throw away your ticket because they check them again. Plan on staying at least two hours to walk through everything. There are restrooms outside in the gardens and inside after purchasing tickets. It’s a beautiful place filled with art, architecture and the story of the Templars. It’s worth the trip. We had lunch in the village of Tomar on the main square at Tavern Antique. It’s worth the stop there as well! Bring more coins for parking.

This is a very interesting site where the Templar Knights lived and worked. You can see the dormitory, kitchen, bakery, chapel and ‘Pre-chapel’ where they would prepare for the church service. Manuelian and renaissance architecture are mixed. Well worth a visit.

Wonderful ancient castle ruins you can just wander around; no guards, no fee. We walked around pretty much all of it, on the ramparts and in the gardens. The gardens are particularly impressive with many fruit trees.
The Convent was not open when we were there (July 2023); they were doing significant renovations, apparently.
The parking lot is quite small. There is a pay station, which we missed but luckily did not get a ticket.
We had decent sandwiches from the little cafe; much better than most museum cafes in the US.

We thoroughly enjoyed touring this castle ruins. There is a major restoration happening on site. The castle is free to enter. It is connected to the convent - which is more spectacular (cost 6 Euro for adults and 3 for seniors). You can easily walk the wall surrounding the castle as there are hand rails which make it safe. Lots of cobble stones and stairs.

How much of the Castle/Convent is really Knights Templar? From researching, I get the impression only a small portion of it (the rotunda) was built by the Knights Templar, rest is add-ons in 15th/16th century. I am trying to decide if it is worth 2-hr train ride from come from Lisbon.
Thank you!

We are driving from Lisbon to Porto and would like to visit Tomar (and in particular the castle) along the way. Unfortunately, we will have luggage in our rental. Would you feel safe leaving luggage in the car while visiting? Any suggestions?
Written April 17, 2017
Visiting the castle there is a small cafe on the left as you approach the top. I would recommend you park close to that and hide everything in the boot. The other person has made a good suggestion too.
The town has lots of parking that appears safe, otherwise the Hotel dos Templarios is close to the river with a large car park that might be a safe bet.

Olá, poderiam me dizer se o castelo fecha em algum dia da semana? Grata.

About how long should we plan to visit the Castle? We're also planning to spend about 2 hrs. for the Convent of Christ and this will help plan our day. MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!!
