Located a 10 minutes walk from Old Town Tomar , across the Nabao river (on the Ponte Nova) ., and very close to the municipal market of Tomar .
A simple , humble structure with a separate bell tower and some interesting tile works inside the church .
The burial site of Gualdim Pais , one of the grand masters Nights Templars .

Also known as Santa Maria do Olival. This is a functioning parish church, so has Mass on Sundays. The bell tower dates from Templar times and the church is the burial place of Dom Gualdim Pais, the founder of the town.

The first Templar church in Tomar built by Gualdino Pais in the same time with the Castle. It has figure 8 as basic in its construction: 8 steps, 8 columns etc., because 8 - sign of infinity - also Templars sign.

This church was built in the XII century under the leadership of D. Gualdim Pais, Master of the Order of the Knights Templar in Portugal. It was used as the Templar pantheon for the Knights of Tomar. After the Order was extinct throughout Europe, in Portugal, all its churches and castles reverted to newly created Knights of the Order of Christ, which succeeded the Templars in Portugal. D. Gualdim Pais is buried in this church.
Santa Maria do Olival, under the Order of Christ, became the See of all churches in the Portuguese Maritime empire.
When you visit, in the original parts of the church built under D. Gualdim Pais, pay attention to the use of the number 8. You walk into the church by going down 8 steps, 8 windows, 8 columns, etc...Have fun!

A really special place. Many would note how simple it is compared to the Romanesque church in the castle but this place has a very special aura about it.

Allegedly connected to the Knights Templar Castle/Convento do Cristo by a secret tunnel, we now walk above ground to see this beautiful church. And it’s well worth it. A number of Knights are reportedly buried here and symbols of the Order are evident throughout. A modern set of regular, wooden steps now overlay part of the older, irregular and steeper ones, thus making the steep entry less hazardous!

place full of history and often underavaluated. you know that this church was the headquarter of all the churches abroad during our colonial period? It has a precious image with Mary holding Jesus and at the same time being hold by her mother, Ana? And the Templar Master, D. Gualdim Pais, is buried here. Why? also the church of the templars in Portugal..

Inside the church, we got an amazing tour from the woman working there who explained the history of the church, its possessions and pointed out everything that was original to the Templars. There is so much history inside that you need to visit and walk the church of the Templars

This church has a very long and troubled history, as troubled as was the history of the Order of the Templars. It's also the only church I know, so far, that had it's very own defensive tower! Plain as it is, it's still worth a visit

The church is quite renovated on the inside, but if you are interested in the Templars of Tomar it is worth a visit, as this was their burial church. Interesting also for getting a sense of medieval Tomar, as its location marks the end of the town when the Templars were active.
