When you are visiting the “Convento do Christo” you surely will pass in front of the most emblematic case of this formal treatment who are the windows of the Manueline sacristy called "Casa do Chapter". Initially in number of three, two came to our day: One, in the second light, facing south, is visible from the Main Cloister, the other, on the western facade, is the famously known as Janela do chapter. This window is flanked by two gigantic buttresses, or botanicals, very special to see this window.

It's located inside the Convento de Cristo.

Rich in history and conquest, the Templars gained wealth in property and gifts to the church. The Templars took vows of poverty and chastity, however gifts of treasure and land in the name of the church was acceptable. They grew richer than the King and became bankers to nobles. The King would not have it. In the 14th century the King dissolved all religious orders (March 1319). The Templars became outcasts in Portugual only to be renamed Knights of the Order of Christ and falling to the King's rule. This resulted in the Convent of Cristo taking on new growth and building as well as a new architectural style.

If you love architecture and history this window incorporates items from gothic, 1100s, to renaissance 1500s and some additions of Romanesque as well. It was something I could have studied for days with the details

At the time we visited, the window was undergoing maintenance and completly covered up by a giant posture of the window.

All the decoration is intended to emphasise the maritime strength of Portugal, and there are plenty of biblical allusions. But to my eyes it's an overblown baroque extravance. Worth a picture anyway!

Located outside the convent, this tower and window was one of the most striking examples of Manueline style. The tower and the area around the windows was decorated with ornately carved sculpture. These related to the discovery of the New World. Some were sea creatures, seaweed, ropes and cables found on ships, exotic animal, etc. Just a stunning ample of Manueline at it highest.

Early spring might be the best time to come here. Quiet Monday. Beautiful. Fragrant gardens. Very interesting.
