Our trip to Olhão market on a Saturday morning was a joy. It's a lovely, bustling market with a huge inside fish and seafood hall and a picturesque outside area with fruit, veg, bakery, and deli stalls. The customers are a mix of locals and visitors and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. I have visited quite a few markets in Latin America over the years and Ohão has a distinctly 'Brazilian' feel to it. The old part of town immediately next to the market is also charming and again the balance between being 'local' but also visitor friendly is just right. Along the seafront from the market there is a string of really pleasant public gardens with play parks for the young children. Lots of cafes bars and restaurants in the area too. I strongly recommend a visit to this place - if you are a market fan!

Amazing place. This was our first visit to Portugal and it definitely won't be the last. Olhão is stunning. We spent a week wondering around the town, enjoying the atmosphere with locals & eating fantastic food. It's a really laid back place, suitable for all ages. I would 100% recommend it.

A must see in Olhao / beautiful and interesting fish, seafood, fruit vegetables and much much more. Saturday morning was the best as the local vendors line the waterfront outside. The fruit, olives and fresh produce were sun ripened and taste amazing! Loved it.

Have been visiting Olhao for the past 9 years and it never disappoints. Lovely working town and people. The markets are wonderful to wander around. Lots of changes now but hopefully they won’t spoil this wonderful place.

The two markets are side by side and in remarkably good condition considering their age. Indeed they have just received atranche of money from Europe to preserve them as historic buildings. They are mainly open in the mornings but this spills over on a Saturday when the town hosts a giant outdoor market just beside the other two permanent ones.
The fish market is alive with colour, and some very large fish, many of which are dissected in front of you!. Many are varieties unknown to Northern Europeans. The sad part was seeing all the live octopuses which were squirting their ink, in a vain attempt to escape.
A ten metre walk brings you to the fruit market, which is no less colourful, but without the smell. Again we saw fruits that we had previously never encountered. The fruit and veg is really cheap. For a small amount you can buy the fruit of your choice, freshly picked that day. One of our party tried to buy 3 oranges, but was refused, and then realised it was 1 euro for a whole kilo of oranges!
Both markets are in a lovely setting beside the marine walkway, which is in good condition, and has the working fishing port at one end, and about 2 kilometres awy an attractive new marina.

We spent a week in a villa in the hills of the eastern Algarve, around a 40 minute drive from this market. While there was a fish market closer in Tavira (which was itself very good) this was out of this world and we made daily trip for the evening bbq.
Stiff fresh fish and hundreds of varieties to chose form at incredibly low prices (4 Euros for a kg of sardines). One of the best fish markets I have ever been to. if you are in or around the area and have any interest in cooking fish, tis is an absolute must

Olhao is a fishing town only 15 minutes from Faro airport. It is not touristy at all which can make for a limited dining experience especially towards the end of the holiday season. However, the fish market is vibrant and noisy and an experience not to be missed. You will see all manner of fish and shellfish on sale with the traders shouting above each other to attract the customers. The town has a couple of really pretty churches and there is a small marina but fishing boats can be observed every day brining in their catches. You can also watch the cockle pickers working with constantly bent backs for hours at a time. From our hotel balcony every evening we could observe the locals playing petanc (boule) some of them with badly bent backs no doubt from cockling.

Before we travelled to Portugal my wife did a search on markets in Algarve, we saw this on a youtube video and we decided to stop for one night nearby and go take a look. Now I know that the idea of visiting a market may not sound like a real experience, or even any fun at all, but it really was. We were lucky, its December and it was warm and sunny, all around the market are little bars and cafe areas where you can sit and look at the harbour and eat or drink.
A magical experience that's hard to describe in words, I'm sure not everyone would see the appeal but for us it was really great,

This market is excellent. On Saturdays thereis a full fruiand veg market in one of the historic buildings and a fresh fish market in the other one. Outside there are clothes stalls with good leather goods at very low prices. It is also great for people watching. A short walk.. 50 metres and you are in the marvelous back lanes of Olhao. .

Visited the market about noon on a Saturday. Outside stalls with more durable goods. Inside a feast for the eyes with fish and seafood, beautiful fruits and vegetables. Nuts, dried fruit, beans, herbs, everything!
