This is a no nonsense winery. Beautiful old cape Dutch house. You will walk through the working yard to get to the tasting room. Very basic but authentic. Our wine tasting experience didn’t get off to the best start but the situation was rescued by the lovely Tricia. This lady knows how to engage with people and once we found some common ground it was very hard to leave her company - a wonderful hostess (sorry about the pun Tricia!)
2016 cab sauv - best in the region.

It was unfortunate that this was the last wine farm on our organised tour as I think we were all a bit "wined out" (in a good way!) and some needed to doze in the comfy sofas.
The wine tasting was interesting and the staff informative
We have vowed to return and be more appreciative!

I buy their wine in the uk on a regular basis, so this was a must do visit on our trip. Quite a low key place to visit but once inside, the welcome is warm and the staff knowledgeable. Great selection of wines to taste and good background information if you are a keen wine lover.

Went on a wine tour today, as this is a label we drink regularly. Was very surprised at how low key the tasting rooms were, compared to other vineyards, and how few people were there. Guess you don’t need to be too commercial when your wines are good!
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Wines are great. Even have a UK supplier.
Well worth a visit.

Don’t waste valuable time as a tourist on this farm. We visit the Western Cape region frequently and one of our favourite things to do is visiting wine farms. This wine farm offered the worst wine-tasting experience by far. We love their wines and decided to visit them and taste all the wines so we could order a few boxes. What a let-down! The farm itself is pretty, but that is where it ends. The tasting area is rather old, uninviting and extremely small. We arrived quite late in the afternoon straight after arriving from Johannesburg. The lady that helped us (Carol) made us feel, if we were doing her a favour. She explained nothing and gave us the glasses and poured the first wine. No water was given as all the other professional wine farms do. We had to ask her for information on the wines. After each wine tasting we had to get her attention to bring us the following wine. We were the only tourists there so she had no excuse. It felt like she couldn’t wait to just get rid of us. After she poured the last wine she went to sit at their reception area and eventually we got up, payed and left. Because of this bad experience we lost all interest to ever buy this wine again. Yes, we know we are just small fish in a very big pond, but don’t offer a wine tasting service to the public if this is how you going to treat them. There are hundreds of other wine farms with restaurants and a way more professional team that actually enjoys interacting with the public and don’t rush off the tasting.

Our last stop for wine tasting was at Meerlust. This is great vineyard with good quality wine which are reasonably priced.
The Rubicon which is the flagship wine is highly recommended, it is the most popular as well. We could only get the 2014 rubicon to taste, but you can also find older wines in liquor stores... that was a bit disappointing but the rubicon is good quality wine and would recommend it.
There were a few wines on the price list but not for tasting. But Carole the manager at the estate made it happen for us. We got to taste both the 2014 wine and 2005 Merlot. The cab was also good but the highlight was was the 2005 Merlot, I don't think you can find it at in the regular wine shops. We ended up buying a couple of cases.
I normally don't like the whites but the Chardonnay was very impressive. Would recommend that as well.
Over all Meerlust would be in my top 5 vineyards to visit in South Africa. ...highly recommend, great history and rightly priced quality wines.

Meerlust is one of the oldest wine farms in the winelands , with the buildings being there since the 1700s. Because of its national monument status nothing is allowed to be upgraded , this history is what gives the farm its character. Unlike most other farms wine is actually made from the grapes grown on the property and thats why they produce the best wines. Having a tasting with cellarmaster Chris was the highlight of our trip to the Cape.

As the rubicon is one of my favorite red wines, been drinking it for many a year. So this is like a pilgrimage to see where the wine is made, location etc.
The entrance is quite grand a palm tree lined road leading to some colonial buildings.
This is not a place where you can stay for long, just a shop really displaying the history of the vineyard and the different types of wine they produce.
Here you can sample all their wine from the Reds, Merlots, Pinot noirs, Cab savs and the 09 rubicon. Their only white was a slightly wooded Chardonnay which was surprising good, not too oaky.
Hence to say brought quite a few bottles which my duty would allow, not as cheap as I expected, but you are buying quality.

Pride of the Myburgh family since 1756; 1776 on the plaster end-cap of the Cape Dutch Cellar, Meerlust is one of the oldest and best wineries in Stellenbosch. Traditional dedication to the art of winemaking continues today under the guidance of Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation custodian of this seventeenth-century national monument.
Meerlust, with its historic manor house, classic wine cellar, family cemetery, dovecote and bird sanctuary is situated fifteen kilometers south of Stellenbosch, with the blue crescent of False Bay a mere five kilometers away. Wines are only made from grapes grown on the Estate which is uniquely positioned for the production of wines with exceptional complexity and character. Fine red wines such as the Rubicon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir; and, for the for the first time in 1995, Meerlust produces only one white wine, Chardonnay.
Known as Wine Estates because their wines are made from grapes grown entirely on the Estate - Muratie and Meerlust are especially rare, and able to hold this classification in South Africa. For Meerlust, all wines are also matured in French oak.
On our one-day private western cape wine tour, this was our third and final winery; one that other south African friends felt was a very special gem. As with all wineries, there is a charge just to taste, but the fee is waived is you purchase. We couldn't leave without bringing some of the Rubicon along to bring home.
