About
On the slopes of Bottelary Hills bordering Stellenbosch, we are a family estate where nature provides the perfect backdrop to grow, produce and share award-winning wines. Summer at Hartenberg brings lunches on the terrace or picnics on the lawns followed by buoyant games of boule. Winter invites you to intimate fireside lunches and sumptuous reds, smoky charcuterie and olives, and sensorial cellar tours. Our Wetland Conservation Area, alongside the vineyards, makes for a beautiful setting for walks and shared family fun.

Starting with the positives, in my opinion Hartenberg produces some of the best red wines in the Cape Winelands (The Stork & The Mackenzie) and I purchased more on this visit.
However, the estate itself is old, tired & uninspiring with staff who were disinterested on the day we visited. Having visited many fabulous estates in the area, I found it bizarre that such fabulous wines could be associated with an estate that looked & felt so run down.
Rather than driving out to the estate, find a quality wine shop in Stellenbosch and taste the fine Hartenberg wines in an appropriate setting instead.

Our experience of the picnic was a huge disappointment. We had a standard, a vegan and a vegetarian picnic. The meat was dry. The vegan and vegetarian patties were huge and absolutely tasteless. It needed some form of condiment. The vegan picnic's dessert was missing. When I enquired about it, I got a waffle with jam and honey instead of a vegan brownie and a lemon square. To top it all, the waiter added a 15% tip to our bill! For a party of three! We did not want to make a scene in front of him and left it at that, but it left a bitter taste. Based on our experience yesterday, I will not recommend the picnic at Hartenberg.

If planning a wine estate picnic chose here as I doubt it could be bettered. We had a wonderful time last week. We booked on line and all worked perfectly. We arrived at 1 but I wish we had arrived earlier as it’s easy to while away the time until they close at 4.
A lovely waiter guided us down to the picnic area in a beautiful lawned garden with mature trees and tables set with gingham cloths in the shade. By each table is a rug and large cushions. We decided to sit on the rug, shoes off and really picnic. We chose a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz which was delicious with the food and very reasonably priced.
The picnic arrived in a wine box which was exciting to open and discover the contents even though I had read the online menu when ordering! The breads were warm and the large stone baked baguette was fantastic, crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Jars contained delicious smoke late, hummus and feta dip plus a large jar of chickpea salad, there was a delicious hot cheese pastry each and a giant sized warm scotch egg each too. Cold meats and cheeses as well plus olives. Then just when you feel really full you finish with a salted caramel chocolate brownie.
Service was attentive in case we needed anything. After we had eaten we had an enjoyable rest and snooze leaning against the very comfortable cushions admiring the scenery and watching the busy bird life.
The picnic was a highlight of our trip. We were also impressed by the environmental care here with grey water recycling, wildlife encouragement, owl boxes etc. And of course the wine.

I visited Hartenberg during a weekend getaway to the Western Cape. The scenery and general vibe of the estate speaks of a friendly and inviting elegance.. The staff, greets you warmly, and effectively takes care of any and all your needs, assuming, quite rightly, that you will become old friends quite soon ;) The wine is exceptional.. The lunch menu caters for a variety of tastes, and the overall experience is ons of contentment. We enjoyed it so much, that we went back the next day, for another wine and dine experience!!

Tip: book a picnic beforehand!!!

We loved the Hartenberg pinotage so we were very disappointed to find out that the vines had been torn out and there would be no more pinotage. Hartenberg has decided to become the go to winery for Shiraz in South Africa. Unfortunately as far as i am concerned if I want Shiraz Australia is my go to destination and making a decision to compete on the world stage with an opponent who has a huge head start make little sense to me. Having said that they do have and have had for a long time excellent Shiraz, so if that is your thing give them a try. Lunch is great on the patio.

We have a warm welcome by the friendly and attentive staff. They offer us a nice place on a perfect lawn in the shade of an oak tree. Next to the table we have blankets with cushions for relaxation.
The breakfast is really delicious. The wine is first class.
Thank you to the management for creating this fine place. Thank you to the staff for creating this fine atmosphere.
We’ll be back again.

We had been there in 2012. About 20 of us celebrated a wedding anniversary with a super picnic lunch. Recently took a party of good friends. A real international group from Italy/Germany, USA, Switzerland and SA.

Setting is still nice for lunch, service attentive and competent, but unfortunately the food (picnic lunch), was very disappointing.

A tip for the kitchen: less bread, more salad, would be an improvement. The scotch egg was too big and many left it behind.

Sadly, we also found the wines a bit pricey. We were disappointed to have brought our group here, after all the praising we had done for Hartenberg in the past few years.

All this left us with a bad feeling, as we didn't even stop to buy the wines which we liked (and bought), in the past.

I have been a regular visitor to Hartenberg for more than thirty years, often with visitors from overseas. So it was with confidence that I booked lunch and wine-tasting for 4 people, of which one a vegetarian athlete, on line. I followed this up telephonically with a special request for egg with the cheese platter, and was assured that this would not be a problem at all. Sad to say, when the order was requested, we were informed that the kitchen could not supply in our request, but that we were welcome to place an order for something else. Neither could they adhere to our request for an additional portion of the waterblommetjie pickle, and the waitress was clearly uncomfortable in having to tell us this.
Themba was friendly, professional and not overbearing by his wine-tasting, which we greatly enjoyed. While the cheese platters were great, it came with the charcuterie on the plate even for the vegetarian, and the lack of eggs could not supply the athlete with his required protein intake. This is not how I have ever experienced Hartenberg in the past, when no fair request was ever treated as negligible. The venue is still amazing, the memories great, but has the heart gone? Just wondering.
