The picnic works out well. Everyone chooses their own food and heads out to the beautiful gardens to find a shady spot. Information about how it all works was not readily available and we asked guests about where to collect blankets etc. The teenagers loved the Segways while the adults lay on the blankets under the trees. The picnic food was good but we missed things like mustard and fruit as accompaniments. The craft market was also enjoyed by all and we found some affordable little nick-nacks to buy. A lovely day out!

My wife and I are in the Winelands for a breakaway. We visited the restaurant at Spier Hotel for a late lunch, intending to while away the afternoon with a lovely lunch and some good wine. The wine was good; the meal, way below par for an establishing of Spier's standing. I ordered the steak, which I assume was a sirloin because the menu just stated "beef". It was chewy, tasteless and served with a few burnt pieces of butternut and roasted tomatoes. No starch! And the menu didn't even state that patrons had to order their starch separately. I just couldn't bring myself to eat that steak which was way overpriced. Fortunately, Bridgette, the hostess on duty, noted my distress and relieved me of the most awful steak I've ever been presented with. For an establishment of its fine standing, the Spier Hotel was an utter disappointment, and sadly, this was not the first time we've left there unhappy. My wife, a vegan, ordered a vegetable curry which was served to her sans rice. Now who on earth eats curry without rice. It seems the hotel should close down the restaurant and focus on the many patrons who were there for drinks only. Perhaps they knew something I didn't.

We have been to Spier Wine Estate previously & know their wines. We were driving past, & on impulse turned in for a wine tasting. Although they were busy they accommodated us. There was a selection of very reasonably priced tasting options, & my daughter who prefers white wine was able to taste all white, & I was able to taste all red. Service was excellent as was the wine, & our server was knowledgeable. I have found that wine prices on wine estates are often higher than prices in large liquor outlets, but the prices here looked to similar to what one would pay at one of my regular liquor outlets. All in all, we had a very favourable experience.

Today we drove through to Stellenbosch & decided to do a wine tasting at Spier. The wine we tasted was very good but the Cheese & Charcuterie Platter at R185 which we decided to share was, we thought, a 'rip-off' & would most definitely not recommend it. The Platter consisted of 3 tiny squares of cheese, a tiny dish of pickle, another tiny dish of chick peas, another with a few olives, four tiny pieces of bread, 4 minute crackers which were stale & crumbled in our fingers as we tried to pick them up, 1 small butter pack & 6 small pieces of a selection of DRIED meats which had no taste whatsoever. We do like Stellenbosch as the scenery is really beautiful, but we will definitely not be back to Spier anytime soon.
