- Hannahdrew86Cape Town, South Africa4 contributionsNo porcupines, but the Porcupine Walk was still a great experienceMy husband and I were gifted a voucher for the Porcupine Walking experience which we booked in with Damien (hope that's spelt correctly). It was such as great experience and Damien was a great host - very friendly, knowledgeable about the beautiful estate, and Waterford wines. He was great company and provided excellent service from start to finish. Our only piece of constructive feedback is that the light lunch could have been a bit more substantial, especially given the generous number of wines on offer to try. It was however very tasty! We'd definitely recommend this experience to others, so thanks again Damien for a lovely day.Hello Hannah. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience of the Porcupine Trail Walk, especially with Damien as your host. We're delighted to hear that you had a great time exploring the beautiful estate and enjoying our wines. Your kind words about Damien's friendliness, knowledge, and excellent service have truly warmed our hearts. We'll be sure to pass along your compliments to him, and we're grateful for your recognition of his efforts in making your day special. We appreciate your constructive feedback regarding the light lunch, and we'll certainly take it into consideration to enhance the overall experience for our guests. - GeromeCanton of Geneva, Switzerland16 contributionsWonderful wine walkWe had a wonderful time during our Porcupine Trail Wine Walk. Our guide Ruan was fantastic, so friendly and knowledgeable, we really appreciated how well he looked after our small group. The estate is beautiful and the wines we tasted were delicious. We especially enjoyed the first part of the tasting in the forest and being able to walk back to the estate whilst enjoying an extra glass of wine, that was a nice touch. Thank you for a great afternoon. It’s great to know you appreciated the beautiful surroundings and the unique touch of sipping wine on your walk back. - World Wanderer52 contributionsBest wine tasting experienceThe wine tasting was the best experience we had so far on our trip - and we have been on six different wine estates so far. The student who was attending us (we forgot his name, but remember he was studying finance) knew everything about the grapes, the production and the taste. We were impressed by his knowledge and enthusiasm. We also had lunch at Waterford and it was delicious.Hello World Wanderer Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with us! We are thrilled to hear that your wine tasting at our estate stood out as the best on your trip, especially considering you've visited six different wine estates. We're delighted that the student assisting you left a lasting impression, our guest experience is something we focus on and we train our team to know wine inside and out! - MrNigStellenbosch, South Africa6 contributionsDivergence into the golden triangleAs I anticipated, the atmosphere was unique yet fulfilling. For the quad and fountain at the centre, the place reminds me of my high school'Allan Wilson Boys'. It was a very windy day, but the chocolate and wine pairing made the day digestible. What particularly outstood me was Carla, my wine advisor, and Cab Sav 18'. The combo of these 2 plus her story of James Bond made me giggle a bit. I would recommend this place.Good day, Flyer. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience at our tasting experience! We are delighted to hear that you found the atmosphere unique, and it warms our hearts to know that the quad and fountain at the center brought back fond memories of your high school. We're glad Carla made a lasting impression on you, we will be sure to pass on the compliment to her. - jeanne fWinchester, Virginia2 contributionsBeautiful wine estate with a personable and interesting wine tasting.Waterford is a beautiful estate, very elegant yet comfortable . Right from the start , we loved the rows of lime trees in the parking lot, where you could park under their shade. We didn’t eat in the restaurant , but we did have our best wine tasting experience here, in the large shaded courtyard. Joni was perfect in her presentation and information , and she gave us just the right time in between wines , a very relaxing pace. Most of all , Joni was very personable , and chatted with us and came across as genuine and very friendly , and knowledgeable about things to do in the area. She made the wine tasting a memorable experience.Dear Jaenne We're delighted that your wine-tasting experience with us exceeded your expectations! It's fantastic to hear that Joni made your visit memorable with her perfect presentation, thoughtful pacing, and personable demeanor. - WallyHollandVoorburg, The Netherlands461 contributionsFabulous lunch and wine tasting; sustainability can be improvedWe visited this estate because my wife drank earlier in the week the Waterford Chardonnay that she really liked. The lunch reservation we booked in advance (recommended). The restaurant and tasting area is really in a very nice serene environment. The service is excellent as well as the food. We did the 6 different types of wine tasting + the flagship wine “The Jem”. Not all wines are to our liking but overall very well made. We really enjoyed our afternoon here; it is very recommendable. Few words of criticism: is it really necessary to offer imported salt from Hawaii? (Sure, the restaurant is called “Salt” but you probably know what I mean) and does South Africa not have an alternative to the still water imported from Italy? Please keep it local!Good day Wally Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us at the estate. We are thrilled to hear that you and your wife enjoyed the serene environment, excellent service, and the menu during your visit. Your constructive criticism is also valuable to us, and we take it seriously. The SALT chefs have a huge collection of salt from all corners of the globe bringing different cultures, beliefs, and flavours into their cuisine. A salt that they make the most use of is the Baleni Salt, a local salt crafted by a tribe in the region of Limpopo, this is a sacred salt and holds a large traditional belief for the people who craft it. Without your feedback, we wouldn't know where we can improve and for the constructive criticism, we thank you. - Pebbles111372 contributionsFabulous staff, wine & food.We popped in during our wine tasting tour, without a reservation and hoping to get some food whilst we were there. Unfortunately, they had stopped serving food when we arrived and it looked like we'd only be able to do the wine tasting. However, the lovely lady who spoke to us asked if we could give her a minute whilst she went to speak to the manager / kitchen staff. She promptly came back and said that they'd be able to prepare a small selection of meals for us, to go with our wine tasting. How amazing and how flexible of them !! We were seated in a gorgeous, airy private room were we enjoyed our wine tasting and delicious food. We were looked after by the wonderful Malaika who was friendly, professional, personable and efficient. A gem of a lady and such a great ambassador for the company. We were not rushed and throughly enjoyed our time at Waterford. Food portions were great and the food was very tasty. Prices overall were very reasonable. Absolutely I would return and would definitely recommend to others to visit. Thank you so much for hosting us. It was exceptional service. 👏🏻Thank you for the detailed review! We're so glad you decided to pop in during your wine tasting tour, and it’s great to hear that our team was able to accommodate you with some food despite the kitchen closing. - Mauro GhilardiRome, Italy708 contributionsSuper welcoming staff!Super nice experience. We went there on a Sunday afternoon. We weren’t able to book online a cellar visit because it was full and so we had already a wine tasting elsewhere. Nevertheless we trued to stop by. Despite not having a reservation, nor a wine tasting they were super nice to us and had a guy from their staff to took us visit and explain the cellar. The estate is relatively new but the site is nice and cozy. Very recent like most of the places in Stellenbosch but very pleasant. Well done and thanks again.Thank you for your lovely review! We’re so glad you took the time to stop by, even after a full day of wine tasting. It’s wonderful to hear that our staff could give you a personalized cellar tour, and we appreciate your understanding about the booking situation. We strive to create a cozy atmosphere, and it's great to know you felt that during your visit. Was quite a cool day and there was no activity on the vines. We both loved the experience but maybe it would have been better to enjoy an experience at the wineryHello Andy. Thank you so much for taking the time to give us such a great review. We are thrilled to hear that Damien gave such a memorable experience! We understand that the weather sometimes does play a big factor in the vineyard's activity, and that can dampen the experience, we apologise for that. Beautiful setting and friendly waiters
3 of us tasted the white wines and rosé
All the wines very disappointing except Chadornay which was potable
Cannot compare with De Grendel wines which is in the same price range
We had another glass of Chadornay each
Fourth person in our party didn’t drink
We had their Craft platter and local platter to share. Interesting but not great.
Service very slow but really friendly
Bill with service came to R1200 and one of our party only had some ot the platters and no wine
go for the setting but not the wine or food

Perfection from arrival to departure, Waterford has an understated beauty. The wine tasting was again beautiful and Daniel, our sommelier, was a perfect gent. The 5 combo with chocolate was our choice and it did not disappoint.

Took the wine safari cos of the positive TA reviews but did not know what it involved. Oliver was our tour guide and driver, and he had the most personable character, who reeled off interesting/educational facts but was also thoughtful and went out of his way to make sure everybody had a good time. Loved the setting for the red wine tasting and indeed the 2 snack boxes. Take it as read the wine was excellent. Everything about the wine estate and its staff is class. We were with a small group who had a prebooked lunch, unlike ourselves. Oliver gave us an impromptu free wine and chocolate pairing tasting. This would have cost the estate very little but meant a great deal to ourselves. Thank you.

Our experience on the Porcupine Trail at the Waterford Estate was absolutely fantastic. Our guide Brett was a lovely guy and had amazing knowledge of the estate, the wine making process and the wines we drank.
The walk itself was lovely and the views were incredible and then the wine tasting itself in a nice secluded spot, thankfully out of the sun, was brilliant. The food provided was also ten times better than we would have ever expected! When we returned to the main party of the estate there was further wine and chocolate tasting which was lovely. The amount of wine you get for the price you pay is crazy good. We definitely left feeling a bit tipsy which we were not complaining about! For the UK you can even get the wines of your choice delivered for free if you spend over £75 so we didn’t need to worry about our luggage allowance.
My big tip would be to ask for Brett if you decide to do the tour as he is we truly excellent.

We both really enjoyed the Wine Safari and thought our guide, Dylan, was excellent.
Although a relatively new wine estate it does have an old but luxurious feel to the place and does remind you of Tuscany (which was the inspiration apparently). Rather than a perhaps more traditional tasting in the cellar et et then they have this idea of providing guests with a tour of the cellar, then driving around the vast estate in a jeep and finally enjoying some of their lovely wines and a fabulous cheese and meat platter whilst gazing at the incredible views. The tour isn’t cheap at R1450 pp (c£70 pp) but the trip did last close to 3 hours and we very much enjoyed it.
As for the wines, then you get to try 7 in total (which included the very nice Cap Classic when we arrived). We preferred the whites (in particular the Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay) to the reds - ‘The Jem’ was nice enough but we expected more given its hefty price tag.
A really enjoyable tour and we would happily recommend it to anyone.

Waterford has always had a special place in my heart as it's so beautiful and their wines are also delicious, and I am glad to say that they have only improved since I last visited. This time around I took my wife for a her birthday to SALT @ Waterford and I can honestly say my mind was blown. Firstly, the restaurant makes perfect use of the picturesque courtyard with all tables positioned in such a way that you have a beautiful view of it. You can't not taste their wines when you visit so we decided on doing the tasting while we enjoyed our lunch. They have various tasting options available, however we decided on one with a wide variety of wine styles including 3 wines paired with artisan chocolates. Our lunch at SALT was just as awesome and a must experience for everyone. Everything we had was beautifully presented and super tasty! Standout dishes for us were the Swordfish, Hantam Rack of Lamb and the Grilled Beef Rib Eye, but you can't go wrong with whichever dish you end up choosing. Something which I also liked was the different salts available on the table for you to taste, as well as enjoy with your food. Our waiter, Greg, was amazing - from welcoming us at the door, to overall just being very friendly and attentive throughout our wine tasting and lunch, with his knowledge of the different wines being the cherry on-top. My wife and I would just like to say a massive thank you to Chef Beau du Toit and his entire team for making our experience at SALT @ Waterford so special and memorable.

Everything was just prefect with this visit- we were greeted at the estate entrance, assigned a guide (Rourke) who was very helpful and professional, recommended to us the best tasting options and took us seamlessly through the entire journey.
The setting, the wines, the information provided and the attention from the guide were top notch, and our wine tasting experience was one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommend!

It had taken us 12 years to return to Waterfood for their trademark chocolate and wine pairing – and we greatly enjoyed our visit. It was also good to hear of the vineyards maturity and gentle aging and improvement of their wines. Their shiraz was stunning, and I don’t normally liked shiraz, no bitterness at all and worked so well against the dark chocolate. The cab sav was smooth and full bodied, but the star of the show was the dessert wine, which was delicious. Too bad we only had room for one bottle in our suitcase. A winner.

We have been to Waterford many times in the past (before Covid) and enjoyed the wine tasting with chocolate. This time we had heard about Salt so we’re very Keen to try the restaurant. We arrived and we’re seen to our table. That’s really the story. Menus arrived we ordered we eat. There was no introduction by the staff to explain the concept of the food the experience etc there are 3 different coloured salts in small bowls on the table I can only assume there for show so we remember we were in the restaurant not for any other reason.
If that’s not the case we were not informed.
In summary the service was lacking for a restaurant that clearly considers there food experience to be more than the average wine farm and with the setting tightly so. It appears the staff were far more attentive with the wine tasting groups than the diners. The food was ok but overall the experience was underwhelming and not worth the cost.

Idyllic views reminding one of Tuscany, lemon and citrus trees, clad stoned walls , beautiful welcoming seating and a fireplace that comforts the soul on a spring rainy day. One immediately envision a breath taking wedding that can fill the welcoming spaces overlooked by the Hottentots- Holland mountain range. On entry you know you are in the wine lands and servers are keen to tell you all about the estate’s specialities. The menu was simple in number but varies for all tastes, from vegetarian, to fish medleys as well as pork. I can recommend the chocolate dessert medley with salted caramel sauce, home-made ice cream and biscuit crunch. The pork melts in your mouth and the lentils with veg finishes the experience. I found the pancetta made it a tad too salty.
On a warmer day, the spherical quad with signature water feature, is the place to frequent with friends, family and loved ones.
Lovely setting! Beautiful food! Good wine!

Hi camila v,
Thank you for your message. We don't provide transportation for guests - they will need to organize their own transport to and from Waterford Estate.

Hello,
Our Wine and Chocolate Tasting Experience is only done with the Waterford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, the Kevin Arnold Shiraz and the Waterford Heatherleigh Noble Late Harvest wine. The chocolates have been specifically paired with these wines.
Unfortunately we don't have chocolates that go with our white wine's, but if you would like to just taste our white wine's you can definitely do that.

Is Waterford Estate open during Christmas Day 25th Dec? I am hoping to stop by on the way to Garden Route Game Lodge. Also any nice restaurants near by for lunch break?

Hi 434euniceg,
Thank you for the message.
We are closed on Christmas Day so we will not be able to assist you.
With regards to restaurants near us, there is Mont Marie. You will need to contact them to see if they will be open.
Regards
Bronwyn
