What an incredible experience! We did the salt and wine pairing. Our minds were blown by the fascinating flavours and perfect pairings. Very special opportunity to try salts that we didn't even know existed from all around the world, and see how they compliment our local wines. JC and Andre were such wonderful, knowledgeable hosts, and we were generously gifted a bottle of wine each when we left! Sincere thanks for an amazing day. If you're going there, definitely do the salt/wine pairing, and make sure you have enough time - you won't want to rush those flavours! A world class experience that would appeal to locals and tourists alike. Highly recommended.

I have recently paid a visit to the Bergkelder(Cellar) for purposes of wine tasting. This is a must do for any person who likes to drink wine. The ambience is unique and fantastic. The tasting room is well laid out and the wines are presented most pleasingly. I was highly impressed by the person who presented the six wines we tasted. Zharque Harmse is a young gentleman that went about his job in a most professional way. He was entertaining and had an above average knowledge about wines and tastes. He is a real asset to the Bergkelder and is able to make a wine tasting experience worth remembering.
The wines of the Bergkelder is outstanding - Do not miss this cellar on a wine tasting activity

Wine tasting and museum plus an 'in-mountain' cellar experience, time permitting.
Best to try and have a dedicated tasting from one of their experienced tasting staff so call in advance to check.
For groups, see if they will spring for a tasting of a variety of the Distell wine Brands they have on offer.
For specialists, check out if you can discuss the Vinotek range and visit and chat with them if you can take some extra time.
Don't miss the attached special historical wine museum denoting the location and region's cultural traditions in the vineyards.
If you can take the time, visit the cellar = a unique experience in South Africa. The setting, the nooks and crannies in the cellar and the well presented examples of the 5000 L carved oak casks are notable.
We recently did a business dinner for ~20 in the mountain between the historic casks. Catered locally and arranged and presented with accompanying wines by their staff. A memorable experience plus top level food and wine especially for our foreign visitors. Great service and well presented wines and food.
They also offer a salt and wine pairing and salt, wine and meal experience in house or at your house - something for those looking for 'unusual'.
Try the Fleur du Cap unfiltered range and if you have time - share a bottle of some of the premium reds from other Distell partners - located in bins and coves on the way back from the Museum display.
For those who appreciate the background of the wine making industry and some of its special locations in the Western Cape, the Bergkelder is 'worth the detour'.
While not a foodie place unless organized in advance, its memorable and a must-do for those into wines at locations of special note in the Cape.
Cheers and hope this helps....

Homepge said tastings till 6pm, so our Uber fought his way through insane traffic to this rather unattractive part of town behind the railway tracks.
Entering the place at 4:30 they told us straight away we were too late for tastings, they were about to close, but we were welcome to come back tomorrow (how lovely!)
So we walked our way back into town, promissing ourselves to bever buy Two Oceans or Fleur de Cap again once back in Europe.
As this crative interpretation of opening times apparently happens to many visitors reading the past reviews, the only recommendation is to skip this place and save your time.

I tasted the 6 wine combo and my wife tasted the 3 fortified wine (dessert wine) combo. Both was nice but it took to long from ordering to the beginning of the tasting.

I would strongly recommend to avoid visiting the estate. We arrived today at 1.45 for a visit, and although the indications were it was open until 4.00 pm, we were told it will close at 2:00 pm. Given that we were six people and had travelled from far, we kindly requested to have a whiskey tasting within the 15 min left. The staff refused to provide service although two couples were drinking at the counter.
The staff was very rude and disrespectful and making the effort to visit was a waste of time, very disappointing and an embarrassment.
There are several beautiful wine estates in Stellenbosch that are worthy to visit and enjoy the wine, scenery and very cordial service, therefore it is not worthy to try to visit Bergkelder estate.
We had a wonderful experience at DeMorgenzon and Van Ryn's brandy tasting.

We went to this place to get a tour as it was recommended by the vine hopper. It was very superficial and not worth the time. Cost included tastings so the price was not an obstacle. The wine was so mediocre that it really was not worth it. You can't visit them all and this one can easily be skipped.

We had a fantastic tour at Bergkelder. Especially because our guide, she gave us a relax and comfortable feeling during the tour and tasting. Next to that she told some interesting insights. I would definitely recommend visiting Bergkelder and the guide we had. (unfortunately I forget her name.)
And yes; the wines are also really good. :)
