The whole point and impact of him been released and taking his last steps before becoming a free man and lifting up his arm made me remember it all again. A moment South Africans won't forget. I have eaten in the restaurant and was very impressed with food as well as price. Good experience.

I had the opportunity to stop and visit this sight of historical significance during my recent visit in Cape Town. As a travel advisor of cultural and heritage tours - many to South Africa - I wished to see the site. Yes, I felt the emotional draw of the place as I reflected on days gone by and the story... We read Mandela's magnificent biography before visiting South Africa. The prison being close by the Palmiet Valley Estate where we were at a wedding was a bonus. Great monument and statue in front of the gate of this rural prison, Mandela's last, before his walk down the road visible through the gate. Friendly guards. Park your car in the grove... More

This is a must to visit if you are in the neighbourhood of Paarl, Stellenbosch, or Franshoek. There is really not much to see apart for the famous road that Madiba wlaked along on his final road to freedom. It was a very emotional and inspiring visit. There is not much to see apart from the statue. Do visit

I Was invited to a wedding on Victor Verster. Although we did not make it to see Mandela's homestead, we had a wonderful evening an actually stayed the night. The Next morning we had breakfast at the A'La Carte restaurant.... WOW!! The nicest and best for value for money!! Even enjoyed a lovely swim later at the pool!! Will still... More

Historical yes, special yes, but an event? Nope. Drive past on your way to Franschhoek or Paarl and defnitely stop for a photo at the iconic statue of Mandela. Read briefly and then go. Not a lot to do there (unless a cash machine withdrawl or emergency petrol needed).

So glad we went to visit even though it was difficult to find...lack on signs. But to see the statue of Mandela and the Detention Centre he walked free from was important to the history of South Africa

We had our driver swing through for a photo and that was plenty. Neat to see and read the story but not much else to do there as it's a working prison.

During one of our many visits to the Western Cape we were fortunate enough to be invited to go on a guided tour to this prison. It's situated between Paarl and Franschoek. We walked around the house and garden where Mandela had meetings with De Klerk and where they finalised their thoughts on ceasing apartied. Truly historic and very emotional... More

This is where Nelson Mandela spent the last 14 months of his confinement after his 24 years imprisonment in Robben Island and then Pollsmoor Prison. His autobiography ‘The Long Walk to Freedom’ derives its title from Mandela’s long walk down the avenue from Drakenstein Prison to the guarded barrier on 11 February 1990, where cheering crowds and the world’s press...
