The Drakenstein Prison was where Nelson Mandela was being held when he was finally released. It is stil a working prison, which is why it is somewhat ironic to see ATMs outside the gates. The road from the main gate into the prison is now paved. Mandela famously walked down that road in 1990 arm in arm with his then... More

We visited the Victor Verster Prison on our way to Stellenbosch from Paarl. The statue is at the entrance to the prison so you can park up, take your photo and leave. A few tourist around when we were here but didn't have to wait long. A lot of people think Nelson Mandela served his sentence in Robben Island but... More

Before coming to South Africa, we thought that Nelson Mandela was released from his long prison sentence at Robben Island. He was actually transferred here for the two years prior and from here took his 'long walk to freedom'. It is an inspiring monument for sure. And, if you talk to the prison guard you can actually arrange a tour... More

We passed this monument on our way to play golf at Pearl Valley and stopped on our way back. The nostalgic statue and plinth are situated on the driveway to the prison.

We had the chance to stop by this sanctuary for about 30 minutes last week and absolutely loved the energy around it. We really liked the commerable statue erected in the honor of Nelson Mandela as it really made you feel part of history just by starring at it. A must do while in the area.

After visiting Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 24 of his 27 years and reading his book Long Walk to Freedom, it was a must-see to stop at the bronze statue of him outside the Victor Verster Prison on the last few steps of his journey rising his arms to continue fighting apartheid in South Africa. I believe... More

Having visited Robben Island on our last visit it made it even more poignant to visit this monument. It's worthwhile noting that the actual monument is located further down the R301 past Pearl Valley rather than where the pin is dropped.

The whole point and impact of him been released and taking his last steps before becoming a free man and lifting up his arm made me remember it all again. A moment South Africans won't forget. I have eaten in the restaurant and was very impressed with food as well as price. Good experience.

I had the opportunity to stop and visit this sight of historical significance during my recent visit in Cape Town. As a travel advisor of cultural and heritage tours - many to South Africa - I wished to see the site. Yes, I felt the emotional draw of the place as I reflected on days gone by and the story... We read Mandela's magnificent biography before visiting South Africa. The prison being close by the Palmiet Valley Estate where we were at a wedding was a bonus. Great monument and statue in front of the gate of this rural prison, Mandela's last, before his walk down the road visible through the gate. Friendly guards. Park your car in the grove... More
