- JerryC1952Hampshire, United Kingdom32 contributionsAbsolutely brilliantAbsolutely brilliant! It's an early start in order to meet up before sunrise but well worth it. We walked to our viewing position and then within 15 minutes the first two meerkats appeared, then a couple more, then the whole 'family' - sunning themselves in the first rays of the day. The guides (especially Divi) were so knowledgeable about this 'family' of meerkats - dominant female, dominant male, outsiders welcomed into the 'family', mentors for the youngsters...... It was almost as if the guides felt that they were part of the extended meerkat 'family' and that, as a consequence, they then had the ability to invite us to join. Such a privilege!Visited March 2023Written March 20, 2023
- Lb2020229 contributionsAmazing ExperienceBe prepared to be up early as you need to meet before sunset, but it's worth every minute. We were quite lucky this morning as we didnt have to wait too long before the Meerkats woke up and came out to play. You need to be patient with this trip, they are living in their natural habitat and they do as they please so I can imagine some mornings they will come out quickly, some mornings you may have to wait around and just see what happens, the company cant predict how they will act that morning. Such a worth while experience we saw all the babies (2 months old) today play fighting and going by their normal day. After a while they started to leave their burrow we was given the option to follow and move closer but we chose to leave after an hour so they could continue on with their day. I would highly suggest a visit, make sure you read your emails carefully as you have to confirm you are attending once you have booked. Our guide was great, very useful information and comical. Rememberable experience.Visited January 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten January 17, 2020

We have been on 14 Safari’s, seen all Big Five, all Small Five and also the ugly five, and this one was the most funny one. Much because our wonderful young guide who made a great work togheter with his colleagues. Thanks for some really nice hours.Visited January 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten February 10, 2020

- missslayer18 contributionsMeerkat Magic/Ikkos Equine Sanctuary Tour and AccomodationI would stay away from this establishment. We booked 2 night's stay at this hotel and the owner Laura would not even email me directions to her farm until she received a 50% paypal deposit. Further, when we were lost on the road to her B&B, she did not pick up the cell phone she listed as a way to contact her. We told her we were borrowing a friend's phone and did not know how to use text message yet when she replied to our messages left on her cell phone, she would only text back and not pick up her cell phone. This occurred more than once. She refused to call us for whatever reason. She did not seem like she really wanted any guests to stay there as she refused to pick up on our calls. Unfortunately we had to cancel one night's stay at her B&B the night before and when we called a day earlier, again she did not pick up the phone. We paid her in advance for a night's stay and a meerkat tour R800 (which was 50% deposit) and she refused to refund us that money or to apply it to the second night's stay. Further the website does not tell you that meerkats may not be found during this tour that costs R400/person and that yellow mongoose season is only during a certain time of the year. Plus, this farm charges you to take photos and even more to take videos. If you like to have your calls ignored especially when on the road on route to this establishment and then to be charged for everything like taking photos and videos, then this B&B/tour might be for you. However, please be careful of sending these people ANY money from a paypal account as the cancellation policy doesn't exist. There is NO refund for ANY reason.Written December 1, 2010

- Archie9898Kruger National Park, South Africa55 contributionsPoor responseLet me start by saying that I was not able to visit the Meerkat Magic tour but I would like to put in writing my experience. On the website they say don't phone, they will only respond to emails or text messages. In a very polite way, I sent a text message asking if we could perhaps go on a tour and this is the response I got - and I quote: "The Meerkat Magic Conservation Project's conservation visits are all booked between research assistants and filming into later this year - limited visits are allocated so that the Wild and Free meerkats are not disturbed. We usually take donations of R20 - R50 per visit as our focus is not on large scale overpriced tourism but rather around limited numbers of small group visits with conservation minded guests NOT wanting the standard "check list" commercialised tourism. For a list of our international scientific publications with Cambridge there is a link on the main website. There are 150 + free online conservation videos from MEERKAT MAGIC MOMENTS - UNCUT of our Wild and Free meerkat greeting card images from our Wild and Free meerkat conservation research since 1993 ............. Best Wishes from Grant". I consider this response rude at best - how does Grant know that we are not conservation minded people and why, if they are so booked do they advertise so extensively. A simple "I'm terribly sorry but we are fully booked", would have sufficed.Visited January 2013Traveled as a coupleWritten February 12, 2013

My husband and I did the tour in November with his folks, who were visiting from the US. I was so super excited to see the meerkats, however the tour didn't live up to any of our expectations.
The first dismaying moment was when I realized we were going to be with about 25 other people - not quite what I expected for an "intimate" encounter with such a shy creature.
We chugged back our cup of instant coffee and headed off, indian file, to the burrow where the meerkats had bunked down in the previous night. Sure enough, as the sun rose, so did these little fellows. They were charming and funny, and so cute, and that was really cool.
However what wasn't cool, was the fact that we were promised that photos that were taken of us by one of the tour guides (with the meerkats in front and us behind) have never eventuated-despite us even filling out our email addresses on the given form. I have sent several email requests to Devey now asking if they've somehow been misplaced, but I have not had one single word back from him. Unprofessional to the max.
All up, I have to say that while I loved the meerkats and the short time we had with them, I don't think the cost can be justified, or the dismaying lack of feedback from Devey.
Each to their own, but I would rather go and see these animals in a zoo environment than donate any more money to this group.

I don't want to take anything away from this great opportunity to meet Meerkats in the wild, probably one of the only opportunities in the world, but they have overdone it slightly.
First of all, I am not even sure if 'Meerkat Magic' still exists as there was a fraudster before, who used this name, but he is not involved anymore. The tours are now being done by Devey.
He invests a lot of time ensuring that everything is prepared for the occassion and knowing where they are going to be sleeping the night before.
However we were in a big group of over 20 people and it already starts feeling like a circus attraction. We had booked this more than 6 months beforehand, to ensure our place as we were very eager to meet Meerkats in the wild, so you can imagine our disappointment when you are there with such a large group. It didn't feel intimate. Then you have to wait until everyone finishes their coffee (could also be done afterwards) and then you set off to the borough where they spent the night before. If you are unlucky, as we were, you have to walk quite a bit through the field and in the mean time Devey points out tracks and animals that are visible along the way. Downside was that by the time we arrived we were just in time as they were already starting to come out and had to rush to sit down.
Devey then took pictures of everyone with the Meerkats and promised to send them, but we never received ours. We are now almost 4 weeks further.
So my score of 3 is based on the Meerkats, they drag the score up and they look much better than what you see in a zoo or sanctuary. The tour needs some improvement.
We also did a farm tour with one of Devey's employees of De Zeekoe farm and we had specific requirements, which were not even attempted to be met and we were driven around whilst listening to a monotonous story about farming, which was not our interest.

Hi We are wanting to visit Merkkat Magic in November. I am having difficulty locating an e mail and their website is not helpful? Don't want to leave the booking until we arrived in SA in case they are booked. So, what is the adult cost and everyone says an "early start". How early are we talking about arriving at the centre? Thanks.

As far as our actions we were told numbers were limited but best book. We missed our booking but phoned the next day and all was OK. Remember to wrap up warm. We went in October and everyone was chilled until the sun and meerkats came up. It was cloudy and the meerkats only come out when it's sunny
Hi! How do I book for August 19 or 20 2017?
Thanks!

How do you book for this? Tried using the website but only the first page will load, the page to get contact details or to try and book do not load. Is there another way to book?

Go to website of De Zeekoe guesthouse, contact them and explain your problem I am sure they will help. Best is to book your stay with them . If you can't drive on your own to the meeting point for the adventure, they will help you.remember to confirm your booking the day before ...or ask the guesthouse to do it because he take a limited amount of people per morning and there are mostly a waiting list. you pay him in cash after the encounter- no sighting, no pay....but it will be rare if you don't see them. Enjoy!!!
