So many things to do and experience for the nature lover. Unfortunately on the day we visited it was real cold and windy but will be back!

We take under privileged kids on trips to see their area. Sometimes us helpers get to see a place for the first time too. It is with utter regret that i'd never gone hiking in the Goukamma Nature Reserve. There are plenty of trails, taking you through fynbos, milkwood forest and coastal thicket. There's the amazing river and endless beaches.... More

We went to visit our favourite picnic spot of many years ago and found it still tranquil but deserted. Although it was during the week, there was no one in sight. The river and nature is still beautiful but the picnic tables were flooded.

We decided on a short breakaway in a nature reserve. After visiting Cape Nature's website we decided on Goukamma as it offered a chill out and to be close to nature, and not days traveling to get to the destination. In fact it is very close to the scenic N2 that runs from Cape Town to Knysna. What does it... More

A rather spread out nature reserve with three trailheads. Less developed than other reserves (in the whole visit we did not find anyone to pay the entry fee). Walking maps are in the pale metal boxes that are on wooden poles near the estuary entrance. No facilities and sun exposed so come equipped. Cafe nearby at Buffalo Bay.

Lovely 5 mile walk over sand dunes and through forest. Fantastic views of the bay and river valley. Quite tough walking in the tunes but worth it. Also enjoyable rope ferry across the river.

A very nice beach to stop at if you are in the area. The sea is a bit rough, but the water is pleasant. Nice beach walk without any houses etc in the background. A stop worth making.

If you like walking on the beach or dunes this is the best. You can do either or both and depending on the weather will see everything from whales out at sea to misty ozone oozing indigenous forests.

Most people drive past Goukamma on the way to Buffelsbaai...little do they know that Goukamma offers a serene riverside experience with some great hiking trails and very decent accommodation options. We stayed at the Otters Rest Camp lodge - it's recently renovated with a panoramic deck and an efficient fireplace for cold nights. Everything was very clean and in working... More
