- Kate Z19 contributionsAmazing experience! Our husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience from the boat ride to the hike and buffet lunch. Our guide Colin was very friendly and informative. The coastline with the waves crashing into it was gorgeous. The buffet meal did not disappoint! There were so many food options, including vegetarian. The desserts were amazing as well. On our way back, we saw a couple of Cape Fur seals frolicking in the lagoon. We highly recommend it!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2023
- Marjorie SChapel Hill, North Carolina94 contributionsA scenic and active tour of a beautiful area.We were on a tour of South Africa which included this activity. It was great. The tour guide, Colin, and ferry driver, Big Baby were friendly, informative and responsive. The scenery was incredible. They made accommodations for people who were not able to handle the strenuous walking.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 24, 2023
- Mudeford123Christchurch, United Kingdom333 contributionsWell worth doingWhat a lovely trip. The boat trip is only 30 mins then taken by vehicle to the viewing point. From here you can make the decision to walk back or go back by vehicle. We chose the walk which although quite strenuous (lots of steps) is well worth doing if you are fit and able. Our guide Selby was excellent. Once back at the restaurant we had a very good buffet lunch. Then it is a leisurely boat ride back. Whole trip was approx 4 hours. All the staff we met, including at the ticket kiosk, could not have been more helpful.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 24, 2023
- 1957Ottawa, Canada827 contributionsSpectacular views!Part of our Gate 1 tour , we drove to Knysna waterfront where we embarked on a ferry that took us to the Milkwood Forest . We embarked a vehicle that took us to the top then we hiked down along the side of steep sandstone cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The views were spectacular. At the end of the trail, there is a restaurant and gift shop . Afterwards back on the ferry to the city of Knysna.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 5, 2023
- jayno666Bristol, United Kingdom22 contributionsFantastic views, flora and a great lunch afterwards!A great way to explore the western head of the lagoon. After a short boat trip across the lagoon, taking in views along the way, we were taken to the top of the reserve and had an optional walk down to the restaurant. The walk was a fantastic opportunity to experience panoramic views out to sea, across to the eastern head, and back towards the lagoon. There is also a variety of interesting vegetation along the way. Do be sure to take the short diversion to the sea cave at the foot of the reserve - stunning view of the sea. The walk was followed by a buffet lunch on the terrace adjacent to the restaurant, which was very plentiful and beautifully presented. A good variety of hot and cold food, as well as delicious desserts, including some South African classics. All in all a good half day out!Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 28, 2023
- NA N1 contributionWhat an experience! This was an amazing experience!!! 4 hours and very worth the money. Boat ride, 4x4 drive up the mountain, a hike in the stunning reserve with spectacular views and even going into the caves and then back for an incredible buffet lunch with fantastic selection. Then a boat ride back. The staff and guide, Colin, were friendly and informative. Would definitely recommend!!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 29, 2023
- guinevere fCape Town Central, South Africa4 contributionsExcellent experienceSecond time I have done this tour. Colin the guide was informative and he had a great sense of humour. I enjoyed the walk and the new view platform. The food was a good selection, including catering for a vegetarian, but could of been kept warmer. Friendly staff and a well designed venue, with indigenous bird life and positioned over the estuary. I was concerned about the non indigenous alien trees known as Wattles amongst the vegetation, I feel these need to be removed as they can worsen a fire. A good way to create employment in Knysna. The organisation called Working for Water is an example of how these invasive alien trees are constantly removed in the Fynbos in the Cape Peninsula. Great experience, highly recommended. Thank you.Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten December 13, 2023
- Voyager26Johannesburg, South Africa187 contributionsWhat a great experienceThis is my third time, the last being 2019 , after the Knysna fires that had destroyed almost the whole reserve. Nature has renewed and Featherbed looks absolutely great. The walkways and Restaurant renewed. The boat onto the Heads was smooth and the guides superb, the bus ride up an experience, and the hike down to the restaurant beautiful. Take the whole package. The meal thereafter was generous and scrumptious.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 26, 2023
- Chantal DavecharranPort Elizabeth, South Africa5 contributionsBreathtaking views and delicious food and lots of laughsWe did the 4 hour Eco Experience yesterday which included a very informative boat ride to the Featherbed Reserve ,a ride in a truck up the reserve then a easy hike down to the restaurant. The hike has stunning views and camera pics will never do it justice . The view of the caves at the bottom is breathtaking. After the hike the buffet lunch was very welcoming comprising of various meats ,salads and yummy desert . We thoroughly enjoyed the tour .Shelby,Avril,Joberg and Goswin were very entertaining throughout the trip with humourous tales ,lots of valuable insight and taking care of everyone. Highly recommend this tour ,well worth the price .Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 7, 2024
- DembeMidrand, South Africa5 contributionsGreat viewsThe featherbed nature reserve is a definite must go to place in Knysna. The tour is very educational and you get to know about the history of the town. The highlight of the tour is the breathtaking views of the Knysna heads from the nature reserve and the 2km hike to the sea caves.I would recommend visiting the nature reserve if you love nature and enjoy hiking.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 11, 2024

I enjoyed the tour but After all the good comments I read I found myself a bit disappointed: the boat trip is not a tour of the lagoon but just goes across to the West Head, the walk is a bit rushed - I mean you just walk without much time to admire the views or to read the label explaining the different plants - and is very short, and the actual views are better (in my personal opinion) from the other side which is free. For the price they charge I am not sure it is worth.
If you take the tour take the version with lunch. The buffet was very good (and I am not at all a fan of buffets) and the restaurant has a very nice location on the beach.

The experience consists of a pleasant boat trip across the lagoon, a ride up to the top of the eastern head in a bus, a pleasant walk down to sea level and back along the edge of the lagoon to a buffet lunch and back home on the boat.
I thought Andre the guide was quite witty, the views are stunning, the lunch was very good and the whole nature of the project is very worthwhile. But ...
It is expensive - aside from the food not even a bottle of water is included; although there are many signs on the route about the flora you don’t get time to read them as the guide keeps a slow and steady pace and there are 30+ people snaking behind him; and then too much time is allocated for lunch - time that could have been spent on the trail.
So it is just OK.

We booked the Featherbed Eco Experience on the 12th of December 2019 and we were supposed to take it 08.30 on the 10th of January 2020.
When we after driving appr 40 km arrived at the reception we were told that the trip was cancelled due to too few bookings! We were told that they called us about it and yes we got a phonecall but that call came in the car 07.45 and we were almost at the reception.
We got a confirmation email of the booking 07.50 the same morning that the trip was on.
Why we didn’t get the cancellation the night before is a mystery! But the worst thing was that the lady incharge was very nonchalante and had a lame excuse that they were waiting for moore bookings in the morning.
Obviously we got a refund!

We were looking forward to our trip in such a beautiful setting but it proved to be very poor value. Our initial booking was changed as we were told we were the only people who had booked for an 11.30 departure. We were offered the 12.30 trip and it was very busy. The lunch was chaotic as we were sent to the wrong seating area and then had to move. Long queues for food and the buffet was very average. The ascent to the top of the hill was ok with fabulous views. The walk down was not guided - we were in a slow crocodile so learned nothing about the plants and animals in the reserve. Overall we thought the trip was very over-priced and badly organised.

We were looking forward to the trip to the Featherbed Nature Reserve with a Specialist Guide. On the boat trip out to the Nature Reserve we were given an interesting, general, talk about Knysna, the lagoon, and it's history. On arrival at the Nature Reserve on the Western Head we were handed over to our 'Specialist Guide', loaded into a large Mercedes truck, and driven slowly to near the top of the Western Head at the entrance to the Knysna lagoon. On the way up our 'Specialist' gave us some general information, mainly concerning the regeneration of the Reserve following the fire three years before, but certainly nothing that could be described as specialist, detailed or interesting in relation to the flora and fauna on the Reserve. At the top we disembarked from the vehicle and were left to make our own way down a hillside path back to the boat. There were occassional informative signs by some trees and plants along the path but no input from out 'Specialist Guide' who had disappeared once we started to walk. Very disappointing and not as advertised; no specialist guidance to be seen. Don't think that you are going on a Specialist guided tour.

We had the most amazing guided eco-tour today from Cruise Cafe jetty on the Knysna Waterfront to the private Featherbed Reserve on the Western headland of the estuary. Drizzle was forecast but none of that happened instead a lovely bright and sunny day to take the kiat across a calm lagoon with interesting information provided by our most delightful and knowledgeable guide Helen Persello. Upon arrival on the other side we all hopped on an open bus that took us to the top of the Western Head and those who wanted/could slowly walked down and back to the restaurant through beautiful fynbos on a small hiking path and along the lagoon for 2.2 km (others took the bus back down).
What splendid views all the way up and down of turquois waters, white capped waves, rocky and sandy shores, the ocean, the lagoon and Knysna from a vantage point you otherwise don‘t get to if not on this tour!
Followed by a delicious buffet lunch (included) and boat trip back to complete the 4-hour tour.
Thank you for a most memorable day! We are lucky to live in Knysna and still were awes by the beauty!
Highly recommended for visitors and residents alike!

Well worth a visit. They are managing the recovery of the natural habitat of the area following the devastating fire in the area. It is a well managed operation which you can join in by reseeding the area as part of your trip.
You can walk around the Heads if you want.
Then there is the restaurant a well run unit. The lunch buffet is good and you can eat as much as you want. The quality is good and the staff are happy obviously enjoying their work. A good choice for a day out if you are in Knysna for a few days.

They should tell you which restaurant to go to. On arriving at the nature reserve an employee told us to go to the left after we asked him where to eat, we sat, were served our drinks and proceeded to help ourselves to the buffet. After about five minutes the manager came and told us he had a problem that we were in the wrong restaurant. We told him we were shown here by an employee? He then became slightly rude after my husband told him we came by boat which we’d paid for and we were going to pay for our lunch? He said in return that there should have been a clue for us that what we had on our plate you can’t find for R100!! In other words insinuating that we expected a full meal paying R100 for the water taxi? Very bad approach to treat tourists local or foreign. This was in front of quite a number of people and quite embarrassing. Judging by this we do not think that this person is of management material. Makes us wonder what international tourist will think of this. While we were eating dessert our table was still full of our used plates and cutlery.

We had tried to book this trip on previous visits to Knysna but for various reasons had never got there. I'm really glad this time we did.
The day of our visit was overcast which was perfect as it made it more comfortable for walking. As previous reviews have stated, you get the ferry across the estuary and are then taken up through the nature reserve in a 4x4. The crew on the ferry were funny and informative, the guide (I'm sorry I can't remember his name) was lovely and pointed our various points of interest during the crossing, as well as giving us a run down of how Knysna and Thesen Island came to be. It was really interesting.
During the drive up we learnt about the plants and wildlife and it was devastating to see the lasting effects of the fire in 2917 although nature is resilient and has already recovered really well. We were glad to have the opportunity to plant some seeds and do our bit to aid further regeneration.
The walk down is an easy 2.2km with lovely views. At the end we had the most delicious buffet lunch with a huge asdortment of yummy food. It was one of the best meals we had during our trip.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Featherbed Eco Reserve experience and highly recommend it.

Is it possible to hire a private charter boat to featherbed for a small group and then do the eco experience ? Do u offer this option or should the boat charter be privately arranged?
Written October 24, 2019
We were part of a group of 26, booked at the ticket office. There were a couple of other small groups on the same boat which went across the harbour to Featherbed. Think you have to book in advance and they take you over in their boats.

Have tried to contact this company to prebook a tour for April but they have ignored all emails sent via their website and independently. Interested to know if anyone else prebooked before travelling or left it to pot luck on the day. Are there any other companies based in Knysna that do similar trips out to the lagoon?
