This 75 km historic road was completed in 1883. Rivers generally flow in deep gorges on their way from the mountains to the sea, therefore there are seven passes along the way, hence the name of the route. These are the passes crossing the Swart-, Kaaimans- and Silver-, Touw-, Hoogekraal- and Karatara rivers, the Homtini gorge and the Phantom pass. Knysna Phantom Pass to Saasveld George | 75 km | +/- 1 Hour, 30 min driving time

Drove this way to knysna the views were some of the best I've seen and I've been to many places. There are picnic stops and view points. Sadly there was rubbish left lying but there were wardens about to collect the rubbish.

Thomas Bain, a master road builder and road engineer, designed and constructed these passes between George and Knysna. It offers a scenic alternative to the N2 – you will be rewarded with beautiful scenery and remarkable passes. Ideal for those who admire mountain passes.

The whole garden route is just lovely when driving the "back" scenic routes. Saw Karatara for the first time and drove this route on our way to find a geocache. There is so much history and Thomas Bain had a hand in almost all the roads and bridges in this area. Just lovely.

My family and I did this drive in December, we loved the beautiful spots to take pictures and the quirky people that we passed. Worth doing!

We took this drive on a day when it was windy with a bit of rain. It is a scenic drive through natural forests and farmlands. It is worthwhile to stop at the Big Tree (an 800 year old yellowood). I recommend that you start at the George side and drive towards Knysna.

Yes indeed it is seven passes road. It makes you wonder how they made it to Knysna in the old days. What a road for sidecar riding!!

Beautiful drive through the forests and farms. Initially we read reviews saying the road was all tarred. It's not. There are large gravel sections, but all pretty well maintained and, barring a few bumps, certainly doable in a normal car. We did the drive on a fairly rainy day, thinking it would be a nice way to explore while still... More
