A Magical Wine Farm
Sep 2021 • Couples
This was our highlight of our visit to Hemel en Aarde valley. Chantelle was our host and her knowledge and humour coupled with the wonderful wine was spectacular!

Honestly - one of the most amazing tastings I have ever experienced. Our host was SO knowledgeable, witty and attentive. Incredible to learn so much about the farm and the Hamilton-Russel history. An absolute MUST.

Fantastic sommelier, but a poor tastic room.

This is the first (or one of the first) wine farms as you head up the Hemel and Aarde valley. Fantastic views, and a bonus sighting of a family of the rare and endangered Blue Crane. Sadly, some of the winery staff were not so impressed as they almost ran us off the road when we slowed down to look at the cranes (we later saw the staff in the winery!). The tasting room itself is small, and there was only one person working so we ended up waiting for a while between the various tastings, as she had to travel from table to table. However, her knowledge of wine was very impressive - probably the best we encountered in the various wineries in this valley. We left with the impression that she was a wasted talent in the particular tasting room. The wines also did not impress. We found them very expensive and we certainly tasted better wines further up the valley. However, wine tastes are subjective, and we saw a few customer's pleading to be advised of their next wine release!
As a bonus, you can drive past the tasting room and head up the hill, on a dirt road, past "Braemar House" until you get to a T-junction. Stop there. From this spot, it is a short walk to the beacon at the top of the hill, and from there you have amazing views of the whole of Hermanus and the sea.
In fact, skip the wine tasting, and just go to the beacon.

Amazing place & collection
Nov 2019 • Couples
Today Anthony Hamilton Russel opend his celler for showing us his unique collection of Chardonnays, Pinots and Pinotages which definitely belonged to the best I‘ve ever drunk from the Cape!
Also the magic of the place and the friendliness and geniality of the host were exceptional - I would not want to have missed this experience today, Thank you a lot!

Delicious wine, gracious hosts and beautiful view during tasting.

We were a bit worried as we arrived only 25 minutes prior to their closing on a Saturday but we were greeted and served warmly. Only after the first 2 pours were we reminded of their imminent closing but told not to rush and how to request the closed gate opening on our departure.

Agree with other reviewers that wine purchases are expensive by SA standards but the tasting fee is only 50 rand so no reason to skip having a nice experience. I am giving them a full 5 rating as they should be evaluated for the wine tasting experience rather than the price of their wines. We experienced zero pressure to buy any bottles.

Quality of wine is high and when we later dined at the Wine Glass near the ocean we noted that HR wines were featured in their premium wine flight selections.

Amazing experience
Jul 2019 • Friends
We visited Hamilton Russel over the weekend, and could not have had a better experience. Knowing the wine, and having a full experience was fantastic. The lady who took us through everything was incredibly knowledgable and we found the tasting very educational. Thank you!

Overpriced
Apr 2019 • Couples
Ludicrous prices for wines. Just goes to show what some consumers will pay to be recognized. The presenter of the tasting was most annoying, nobody was given a chance to say anything unless she was interrupted. :-)

Good for bird watching and venue - NOT good for wine tasting!
Nov 2018 • Couples
This was stop #1 on "Hermanus Wine Route", as part of the "Kabura Travel & Tour "Whale Watching and Hermanus Wine Route" agenda, after our fantastic meal at the "La Pentola Seafood Restaurant".

My recommendation to Kabura: Drop this winery from your tour. It was a waste of time. After we arrived, we were told that the woman who normally does the tastings had the day off. When asked if we wanted to buy any wine - we said no - after all, we were weight restricted on our luggage. The "substitute" server rapidly lost interest in us. Normally, at a wine tasting, you are served wines - light to dark - with some form of palette cleanser in between. However, we served dark to light without palette cleansers and, as you might expect, the wines ALL seemed to suck canal water.

On the good side, their is a small patio, with chairs and tables and some good bird viewing. Saw a Mariboo stork among other birds. However, we came for the wines - NOT the birds.

We would not recommend this vineyard for serious wine tasting. Sorry but our visit was a bust!

Gorgeous setting
Oct 2018 • Couples
What a beautiful vineyard! We sat outside on the deck overlooking the pond and vineyard for our wine tasting. It was gorgeous! We had a lovely wine tasting and enjoyed the wines very much. They also have a nice indoor area that is small but boasts a nice wood burning fireplace. The restroom was very clean, too.
