We heard about Bartho's winery and decided to try the wines before investing for our restaurants.

We were very disappointed. Although there was a small fire going the 5 German sheperds and draft through the open door made our visit most unpleasant. Apart from being unhygienic, having 5 large dogs in a dining room is not acceptable.

The lamb and waterblommetjie bredie was not good after having waited 90 minutes (no bread or olives) but the fish cake starter and 'fresh from the oven' apple crumble was superb.

The MCC was very good. The Rose was excellent and so was the Sauvignon Blanc.

This winery has tremendous potential but our visit was disappointing.

Our Wine & Lunch group went to the most amazing wine & food pairing at Mana. Sune put together a lovely menu that was matched by their outstanding wines. Well done , we'll be back.

We popped in for a wine tasting - what a revelation. The food is superb; the atmosphere family and fun; the whole experience is so quintessential "South African" - warm hospitality and loads of chatting and laughing. The wine is excellent too - and as for the pork pies!

We drank this wine at a restaurant one night and loved it so much that we google to see where it was. Thankfully, it was en-route back home! We stopped here at lunch time and enjoyed ourselves SO MUCH that we stayed 2 and a half hours! This is not a big 'fancy' wine-farm (we don't enjoy those as much) - it's a quaint winery, set in the trees with a passionate family running it. Along with delicious wines! We enjoyed everything about our experience - the owners, the wine, the dogs, the setting, the comfy outside sofa that we got to sit on, the laid back atmosphere and how relaxed we were made to feel. AWESOME winery.

During our December holiday to Hermanus I read in an article about wine farms in the famous Hemel and Aarde (translated as Heaven and Earth) valley that Bartho Eksteen has established his own wine destination, called Wijnskool, in the valley. A visit to Wijnskool immediately became part of our "to do" list, Over the years we have come to know Bartho as a wine genius and we could not wait to taste his new wines from his own "stable". When we drove past Wijnskool a few days later, we noticed that the gate was open, and drove in. There was a small group of Dutch tourists who have clearly booked a wine tasting. Although we have not booked, Bartho's wife Sune invited us to join in. We had a brief glimpse of Bartho on his way to do a wine tasting in town. The tasting room is a tastefully renovated historical building. We were introduced to the history of the Wijnskool and their fantastic range of wines, with inventive names matching the school theme and with beautiful and creative labels. Despite the quality of the wines, they are very reasonably priced and we bought enough for the first part of the holiday, knowing we would return. The wines are sold in small boxes that look like old fashioned school bags. When good friends visited us early in January we treated with a wine tasting at Wijnskool. It was even better the second time. There was again another small group of visitors as well as visiting family members of the Eksteens. This time Bartho was also there to talk about his wine. It turned into an extended visit and we only left because we had a lunch booking at one of the restaurants in the valley. We and our friends filled the boot of my car with school cases full of wine, including some of the outstanding Wijnskool MCC, with its playful name, "Dom". A visit to Wijnskool is a must. It is intimate and special.

When we entered, we were pleased to see small families in a picnic area facing a creek and another semi-enclosed area with traditional small tables and chairs. We started in the picnic area but when the wind picked up a bit we moved to the tables area.

Wine delicious and affordable if one wanted to purchase bottles to take away.

50 rand per tasting got us 6 pours which included 2 sparkling (MCC) selections followed by whites and reds. Everything was great and we enjoyed talking with the staff’s mom who was also tasting nearby and later with a local couple who advised us this was their go to place.

Highly recommend!

Bartho has been around for along time. Three years ago he got his own place and it is back to basics. He offers tastings personally from the old mill house, which was established around 1856. This actually suits him, as the unpretentious nature tasting is about the wines and the story about the wine school he runs. Nothing fancy but a tasting with the winemaker and the story behind the wines. His strength is Sauvignon Blanc.

We love the wines of Bartho, but the tasting was a big disappointment. The lady who did the tasting was not knowledgable and had no background information of the wine. What should have been an experiences, became something to forget quickly.

Went there for the Fynarts special Wednesday lunch.
Very disappointing meal. Limited menu and expensive for what we had.
Need to step up a level or two before we go again.
There are better local restaurants with better menus, better quality food and more reasonable prices in Hermanus.

Blink and you will miss this little gem hidden at the entrance to the Hemel en Arde valley. Bartho Eksteen’s lacks the pomp of some of its neighbours. But it has a rustic charm and welcoming approach.
We were greeted by a wolfpack of German shepherd’s who herded us into the small dining room. Sune, the winemaker’s wife, was busy preparing the lunchtime offering.
It was simple and unprepossessing but consisted of a small choice of starts and mains - all hand prepared with an interesting European-Afrikaans twist.
Only ourselves - and several younger dogs - enjoyed the Friday fare which was certainly inexpensive and washed down with a bottle of Bartho’s excellent Provencal style rose.
