    Hidden gem in the mountains
We had a birthday function there that was a huge success . The breakfast was really great ,the setting in the mountains was beautiful and we could enjoy the wine tasting !. The pizzas going out at lunch time looked and smelt delicious too. There are also lovely walks for the more adventurous and cosy self catering cottages if you want a whole weekend experience. A unique experience and will definitely be back .

Wonderful winebar on the way to montagu pass
Very cosy winebar with good food and kind owners. We stopped by after enjoying the cango caves and were pleasantly surprised by this little treasure. You won't leave without a couple of bottles of fine wine after tasting and choosing your favourite.

    A Tipsy Ostrich Tour.
This tour was excellent from the go. We had a friendly guide/driver who was very knowledgeable. The Safari Ostrich Farm was great fun and very informative. The drive along the Garden Route and the Little Karoo was mind blowing. Herold Wines suited us to a tee, not a big winery with a hard sell, but more a hands on cottage industry. The owner Nico was friendly and it was clear he loved his wines, more than just a business. The lunch platter and wines were extremely good value and tasty. Five stars to you.

A little lunch and wine tasting
Just off the main road, along the Montague Pass where it is open this small winery offers lunch and wine tasting. We had a Lamb pizza and a cider in the garden. We then went on to taste the wines you can chose 6 out of 8 wines to taste for 50 ZAR. Extremely good value for the UK pocket worked put a little over £2 sterling. A very pleasant way to lunch and wine taste.

    Great views and wine!!!!
With a group of friends had a wine tasting and lunch at Herald Wine Estate. We settled for a shared cheese board. Nothing special but he wines were good. It is a pity that the old road has still not been repaired and this, no doubt, has had an effect on trade at Herald.

    Wonderful wine tasting
We visited the lovely wine farm for a tasting (7 wines) and a lamb pizza and a cheese platter - amazing! The cold outside didn’t bother us - they have a great fire place and cozy atmosphere. Definitely had a to buy all the wines (prices are incredibly affordable). Well done, will definitely come again

Good food, great wine tasting, host was a gem. Was a cold day and we sat in an enclosure with a wood burning fireplace, wool blankets and good wine. The cheese platter was a nice addition to the wine. All of their food looked delicious. I will definitely visit them again.

We learned just previous evening that also here they produce quality wines.
Montagu Pass was too tough for small 2wd car, but luckily northern road was on good condition.
Tasting was great experience! Tasty wines, and feeling of real "hand made" production. Had to buy some bottles.
Cheese - meat - bread platter was huge, great lunch for two.
Really enjoyable visit! And toilet gives funny art moments...

What a lovely trip. Starting with the slow, meandering Montagu Pass (yes, the grader was busy and VERY kindly allowed us to pass when he could reach a suitable spot) we saw tge beauty of the Outeniqua mountains. Observed all four of the passes. We reached Herold Wines and it is quaint. Beautiful. Sparkling. Tye service was friendly and smiles and banter was the order of the day. The wine tasting - brilliant. The wines were unique and resulted in a couple of boxes of wine. Of course! Then back to George via an alternative route. Try it, I'm sure you will like it.

We were recommended the Herold wine estate by our hotel and went with great anticipitation and hope for a lovely day. We travelled down a stunning gravel road which made the anticipation even more exciting. We arrived and it was just breathtaking. We requested a wine tasting plus tour (bare in mind we had called and informed the company that we would be coming, they knew what we wanted to do and told us it would be absolutely fine). We did the wine tasting and then due to them being so busy we opted to do lunch first and then go for the tour as requested by the owner. We had a lovely lunch and then my hubby went to pay and purchase some wine. Anyway, my daughter and i were taking photographs while this was happening. My hubby came by said he has paid and he said he leave the wine as we may not finish it as we are travelling and it would be a waste if we can't finish it. He went onto sit in the cab. I was then approached by a lady who held my arm firmly and tightly and accused us of not paying as her son had informed her. At this point i quickly ran to the cab to ask my husband what had happened. He came out the car and said he was given the card back when he went to pay at the counter...he assumed all was sorted. He didn't think anything of it. To be completely frank nor did i. Upon this a member of the public who was also there wine tasting saw what happened and the shock on my face went onto say don't take offence it's a very south african way. We are just careful. I didnt know what to say or think. So i went towards the main area and asked my daughter to go to the cab. All this is all close proximity of each other. My hubby and the owner were conversing nicely (i later found out that the owner was apolgoising to my husband for what was an honest mistake and that they hadn't completed the transaction). So my hubby completed the payment as we had always intended to do. At this stage the drunk guest who was obnoxious to me earlier (along with the owners wife) approached my husband and antagonised him... "did you sign?, did you sign?" My hubby was shocked as was i. She walked on tapping him on the shoulder. . "Live with this on your conscience, you people"..... i stood there in shock and had no words. Just shell shocked. I then plucked up the courage to run after the woman and yelled out "oye... what the hell was that about?" Her husband or partner intervened..... he said "sorry she is a bit heated". I left the sorry good for nothing woman and went to my hubby where the owner was apologetic. I can't even begin to think what was he apologetic about... that his wife was physically crossing the remit, that a member of his guest list was racist, that his wife was unprofessional and panicked in her approach or that they had ruined our perfectly lovely lunch and that my daughter is still upset about what she witnessed. South africa is a beautiful country but the people mainly the white people of south africa have stopped the country reaching unbelievable heights due to their narrow minded approach and oppression. I am sickened to think that my family and i were subjected to this. I also tried to contact the owner as i think an apology from the wife and her understanding of bad management would have perhaps alleviated the situation getting to the stage it is at.
I would never recommend this place to anyone who is not confident about confrontation. If you are visiting the place with young children it's definitely not a good idea because the wife is an emotionally unstable person who was unable to handle the situation well so to think that if a family were to go there and your child ended up knocking something in play or some small accident i would not trust her not to physically lash out. If she is capable of being so invasive of space with an adult what could she do. The owner was definitely not able to control the situation well either. He admited that the lady was too drunk and if that is the case then they should have limits. Security even. Nonetheless worst experience for such a beautiful country. The waitress was a black lady funny enough and was just amazing. Just made our day cause she was sweet and funny. Shame about the owners. Shame on you as people. You have let your country down.
