There is very little information on this historic place. We were not allowed to go in . There was no opportunity to have a guided tour. It is a shame because it is the first mosque established in South Africa in the end of 18th century. The freed slave Coridon van Ceylon and his daughter donated the land for it. Historic figure Tuan Guru was the first imam. He wrote the entire Quran from his memory and this copy of Quran is still inside - reportedly.
You can see the Auwal Mosque from the outside.

Actually I thought that "Palm tree mosque" is the oldest mosque in South Africa but the Imam of the mosque told me about "Al Auwal Mosque" and it was really nice to visit it. It's in Bo-Kaap area which is very famous by it's colorful houses. The mosque is not big but really it's very nice feeling when you visit and pray in the oldest mosque in South Africa which is established by the Indonesian imam Abdullah Qadi Abdu Salaam in 1794 who is also wrote a handwriting copy of a the Holy Quran from memory when he was in the prison and that old copy is still in the mosque till now.

It was build in 1794 but to this day it is still functioning as a community mosque. I was able to go there between Asr and Maghrib prayer. I was lucky to find children's classes going in the Massalah. I had a great time interacting with the children as they showed off their knowledge of both Arabic and memorization skills of the Quran. The classes were both diverse in ethnicity and ages. Very impressive.
