The square is named after Groote Kerk, located here since 1704. This is the Dutch Reformed Church. The monument on the square is also connected with Holland. Local parliamentarian Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr stands on a pedestal in recognition of his services in the struggle for the recognition of the Dutch language as equal to English. In addition, there is a memorial to former slaves on the square, because there was a slave market here in early colonial times, and their huts next door. Now there are offices and cafes here, and the ubiquitous McDonald's is located on the first floor of an office high-rise building.

This square in front of the Groote Kerk is in Central Cape Town. A statue of Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr is in the middle of the square. He was a South African politician representing the Afrikaander population during the late 1800s. Perhaps a more important monument is in remembrance of the enslaved people that were bought and sold here during the 1700s. It is at a corner of the square near Spin street. Names of the victims are written on black square blocks.

The Church Square in Cape Town gives an insight into the history of apartheid. It is the former site of the slave market. There are several important landmarks around this square. Worth visiting for anyone who is a lover of history.

This is a great square with interesting art and important reminders of the history of apartheid. Keep your wits around you here as it does have a number of people hanging around the area - not getting up to much.

I'm so pleased that this open space, which has an awful amount of historical significance, has been saved from the ignominy of being an urban car park and repurposed into this charming "Church Square". I found it interesting to read that there had been a big tree in the square, where slaves were expected to wait while their owners went to church.
There is a grid of granite plinths on the square, where the names of slaves have been engraved... a fitting acknowledgment of their existence and the role they played in the life of the city. While you are in the vicinity, pay a visit to the Iziko Slave Lodge. It's well worth a visit!

The square is right in front of the Groote Kerk. There is currently a colorful display on water awareness in the square. I love the 2 faced statue!

This place wasn't high on places we visited in Capetown but somewhat enjoyed walking through it. There's a few coffee shops nearby as well where you can stop and people watch.

Our accommodation looks out onto Church square, which is frequented but tour busses. It's a small but well kept square and the main entrance to the Groote Kerk. I've not seen much happening here other than a few groups of men milling around.

This little Square, in Parliament Str, looks just like any other, but on closer looke there is a lot of historical finds here. The old slave tree, is commemorated here. a place where slaves were brought to be sold in those vile old days. On the square itself a more apt memorial has been set out putting names to some of those unfortunates who arrived back then. The back entrance to the Groote Kerk is also to be found here, along with some other historic buildings of interest. So next time instead of just driving past, take a moment just to stand and contemplate just how far we have come!

Church Square in the heart of Cape town has real historic significance but no real value for a passing tourist. A cobbled square with a statue of some forgotten person is hardly a tourist draw. Recently some black granite blocks have been erected at one end of the square with the names of people attached to the history of SA.

Occasionally the square hosts some live entertainment with performances from the student art and drama fraternity. Also is often used as a backdrop for TV commercials and films. The last movie filmed here was "Safe House" with Denzil Washington.
