Signal Hill in Cape Town is as the name says - a hilltop that overlooks the city and gives you a bird's eye view of its absolute beauty. It's a quick and easy drive up and especially popular among the romantics at sunset. It's also arguably the most instagrammable location in the city for both locals and travelers alike, but Signal Hill is also great for families! Our little ones love the adventure and to run around on the open plain once we're on top (much like scenes from 'The sound of music').

It's an amazing place to visit no matter the time of day, no matter where you're from, and whether you're alone, with friends or with the whole family.

It's particularly crowded (as with many tourist attractions) on beautiful sunny days.

Be safe and have fun in our beautiful city,

On the evening of 13 Dec, we went up to Signal Hill as part of the Sunset Bus experience with City Sightseeing bus. I never experienced anything like it. It was very windy, however the view and sunset was amazing

A visit to Cape Town should include a sunset visit here although it is hugely popular and expect severe downhill traffic after the sun has set. The view and the vastness is out of this world. Can become chilly so take something warm with.

Easy to drive up to the top, although parking on weekends can be tricky. A great spot for sunsets.

Lovely walks around the top that are not arduous and the views just from the car park are spectacular. You can see Table Mountain and Lions Head from one side of look down to Bantry Bay, Sea Point and Green Point on the other side.

Multiple paraglider companies launch from just beside the car park so you get a great view of them leaping off the hill!

If you cannot face the queue or the cable car itself, this is the next best view of the city, and probably not as affected by the clouds. Easy to drive up, and park. Personally, I found 100m before the car park the best place to take picture of the city, and then on the other side of the car park for Table Mountain...
Acts as the take off point for the paragliders.

This is not a full day event so you only need an hour to experience it. This is the cannon fire that you can hear all over Cape Town at noon every day. We arrived at 11.15am via an Uber and had a look around, taking photos of the various guns and the superb views over Cape Town before any crowds arrived. Then the current custodian, Chief Petty Officer Samson, arrived and gave us a short but interesting talk on the history of the cannons and told what was going to happen. He then loaded the cannon with black powder and asked us to move about 25 m away as the gun was VERY loud (170 db).
He gave us a countdown to the guns firing and that helped us to time our photos to catch the white smoke that issues from the cannon when it fires.
Great thing to do in the middle of the day, especially as it is free to attend, and one we will remember for years to come.

Our first visit to Cape Town was a very bad experience. We got off the tourist bus and walked up through Company Gardens. We then decided to cut across to Signal Hill and get a view of the city before going back down. Big mistake.

We took a path off the road that goes up to the Noon Day Gun and got mugged! Three guys, one who showed a knife, another who threatened he had a knife and one who said he had a gun. We gave them our phones, money and credit cards. I was pretty miffed so I refused to give them my shoulder bag (which contained my camera). Luckily the handle broke as one of them tugged at it so I was left with the bag.

So what did we learn?
We recommend you drive. Even short distances. Leave a gap between your car and the car in front. Don't assume because it looks nice that you're not going to get mugged. Don't carry passports. If there are two of you only take one phone out. Keep a credit card and cash somewhere that they aren't going to find it. Consider having a dummy purse. Don't wear expensive jewellery.

We heard a number of other stories from the people we've met and it wasn't just us being unlucky - the stats are there on the web if you google them.

We took the red bus sunset tour and enjoyed a lovely sunset with a lot of families and groups. Some brought picnics and it was a lovely way to see the city. The drive down was great seeing Capetown at twilight. Great photos

Awesome view from Signal Hill. The day I went to Signal Hill the sky was absolutely clear and fortunately I got one of the best views of the city from there. Sharing some of the pictures I took that day.

We visited Signal Hill as part of an organized bus tour. While you can reach Signal Hill by walking trails, I would not recommend it for mobility challenged individuals - even those who might think that they are fit. When I visited, I noticed one individual who had jogged up using the road rather than a hiking trail and he seemed to have managed without too much difficulty. Once you're at the top, the views all around are spectacular, but there isn't much else to do once you're up there, so just be prepared to enjoy the scenery.
