Experience life in one of Cape Town's periphery townships on a private two-wheel tour. Join a local guide on a bicycling excursion though the community, which began as an informal settlement during the years of apartheid. As you go you'll interact with residents, learn about the township's cultural background and even interact with area children at a daycare center. The tour also includes a visit to the Sangoma―or traditional healer―and lunch at a local restaurant.

We took a hike with Bevan, up and down Table Mountain. We started in the back from Kirstenbosch Garden and then down the front, as the cable car was not open. This was a hike like nothing else we have ever done. Bevan was very knowledgeable and made sure we were well taken care of. We saw views, native plants & flowers, and animals that were amazing! I highly recommend AWOL Tours to see Cape Town in it's splendor. Thanks to all who helped organize this day!

Jeremy was an amazing guide for our one-day tour of Cape Town, Table Moutain and Signal Mountain. It was a CRAZY day because we were faced with changing flight schedules, a fire on Table Mountain two days prior with hot spots flaring up, the govenrment closure of the tram and of Robbens Island. At every turn and with every change in plans, Jeremy took it all in stride and assured us that he was there to give us the best tour possible. He was flexible, accommodating, and knowledgeable. We had a wonderful time poking around the city, taking a short hike, and having great conversations with him about Cape Town, past and present social issues and the challenges facing Cape Town and South Africa. All the while Jeremy was kind, patient and caring. He was committed to making the most of the changing situation and insuring that WE had a wonderful day - AND we did! His love of South Africa, its landscape and culture was clear. We could not have had a better guide for our topsy turvey day and look foward to returning to South Africa and hiring Jeremy and AWOL tours again!!

I absolutely loved this tour! My guide was Lutho, he was really knowledgeable and generous with his time. He taught me a lot about the local customs and culture, he even taught me some Xhosa. The area is really interesting, it’s a great way to see how people live in Cape Town and work together as a community. We visited a local kindergarten, a shop, the library and had an incredible lunch. If you’re in Cape Town this is a must do experience! I was on my own and felt completely safe!

Dear Cassiejm2014, Thank you so much for taking the time to review your AWOL Tours Cape Town cultural township tour. We are so pleased that we could contribute meaningfully to your holiday and that you enjoyed the company of your guide Lutho, who is a local resident of Masiphumelele township. Yes, we agree lunch with Nonni is always a highlight of this tour. Guests might have reservations about visiting an informal settlement and awkward at viewing people’s obvious poverty; however, the local residents in Townships welcome you and encourage tours to take place in their communities, as it is one way in which they have an opportunity to get involved in the Tourism sector. The tours are operated on a non-profit basis and a fee goes directly to the people we visit and who make this tour possible. The AWOL tourism project in Masiphumelele has generated significant, sustainable benefits and has proven to provide real, lasting benefits for the local people. The residents of Masiphumelele has so much to offer and we look forward to sharing the experience with many more guests to Cape Town. Kind regards, Helen AWOL Tours. Thank you again for giving AWOL Tours an opportunity to be the highlight of your holiday.
