Actually St. George's mall is not a mall but a street. During the days of the Dutch colony it was called Berg straat. The name change occured when the British had firmly established their power in 1830. George is the patron saint of England. The cathedral at the far southwestern end of the street got the same name.

Since motorized traffic was banned from the street, St. George's mall is a pedestrian zone. There are quite a few stalls selling souvenirs and other items. During lunch time there are some places to buy food or even sit down and have a simple meal. Activity dies down after 6PM, when also security presence is reduced. There are some interesting boards with info about Cape Town's history.

This is a collection of stalls holding all tourist materials. We didn't look at prices as materials were not level of ordinary at best. The stalls cover a one block wide by four block long mall area between buildings.

Hanging out here and the parallel Long Street is how you can experience buzzing life in Cape Town .. Not where the tourists usually spend their time but packed with traders, restaurants and bars.

Lots of stalls selling locally made items. A place for both locals and tourists. There are some nice stores and restaurants on the street.

There is a lot to take in if you visit this mall... my second visit was done at a more leisurely pace and I saw so much more. What was particularly impressive was the memorial plinth erected to honour the first bishop of Cape Town, Robert Gray. He did some church planting of note and I feel that a similar memorial should be erected to honour Sophia, his wife, who drew up the architect plans for a fair number of churches in the Cape Province. She is widely acknowledged to be SA's first female architect.

this ties into another mall plus the company garden, not sure when one ends and the others start, but lots of traditional Africa trinkets for sale, art, clothing, all good dust catchers and gifts!

I loved that this area is walking traffic. So very little streets to cross with cars. There is lots of shopping and outdoor cafes. Shady too!
