That’s fair enough, and we had a prompt refund. Just flagging that if you are very keen to do it, book in for early on in your trip, in case it gets cancelled.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 20, 2023
- Lewis and Miss Gucci Travels39 contributionsRobben Island, a much needed stop for some perspectiveRobben Island was a very informative. Miss Gucci is very interested in history. The drive on the bus around the island and tour round the prison was really thought provoking and surprising. An old prison inmate told his story which really hit home with Miss Gucci. Make sure you bring cash for the refreshments as Miss Gucci only had an Amex and could not by nibbles for the journey.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 24, 2023

I understand why it is logistically impossible to walk around everywhere due to the time constraints. Our guide humanised the tour. The information boards were good. You could feel the despair as you walked around. I was humbled to think I was walking where President Mandela had been. - TravelingFamilyTripChicago, Illinois209 contributionsI learned a lot on this tour -- annoying ferry departure delays took an extra hour.I found the tour very meaningful and educational. The bus trip around Robben Island followed by ex-inmate guided tour around the prison buildings and Mandela's cell seemed nicely done to me. I accept that it is only accessible by ferry, so that takes some time. The day I went, we had to wait about an extra half hour on both ends for the ferry to depart. On the way to the island, it was annoying waiting in the line in the departure building, but at least there are some informative panels. On the return trip, we had to wait on one bus that was a half hour behind all the others for some reason.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten November 2, 2023
- NaomiRGreenBordon, United Kingdom234 contributionsTrue experience but bring your sea legsThe history is something we should all know and it’s shared on this tour by the most passionate guides and hosts - they truly make this the visit it is. I am so glad we did it but the ferry crossing is SO rough, they know it as well as they provide sick bags on mass. Had I known I wouldn’t have gone but then I would have missed out on the experience.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 11, 2023
- spsafetyEdinburgh, United Kingdom67 contributionsInspiring experience of Robben Island being used as a prisonVisiting Robben Island is a must when in Cape Town, a short trip on the boat and onto a coach which takes you round places of interest on the island. Then you are taken round the actual prison block and outside space by an ex- prisoner who tells you his real life experience of life when incarcerated. The trip into the prison block shows what life was like and the very little facilities the prisoners had, but this was part of the punishment. An inspiring trip not to be missed.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 16, 2023

Great trip to this island it is a must do to find out some of the history behind South Africa. A trip round the island on a coach then an ex prisoner gives a very moving guided tour to the prison, telling stories of what life was like in the prison. We saw whales on the trip back and great views of table mountain.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 17, 2023

- Kevin S5 contributionsGuides on the island outstanding, ferry Organisation a complete messThe tour to robben island wuould be very cool if you don’t need to use the farry. They ask the people to come 45 minutes before departure and let you wait additional 30 minutes in a hallway without any seating possibly or air conditioning. Today we have 30 degrees Celsius. What an nice start. As already said the time to on the island was great. On our way back we had to rush getting the ferry. Later thee ferry stopped in the middle of the ocean because of to many traffic in the harbor. JackpotVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 6, 2023

Prison tour was even more meaningful by the fact that our tour guide was a former prisoner (Mr. Ubaba Nthando Mbatha) during apartheid and alongside Mandela until his release. It was poignant to hear his first hand account. He was professional, insightful and answered all of our questions. The Robben Island tour includes a lot of time to queue for the boat, transfer to buses and general admin. You spend about 1 hour actually experiencing the place and learning about what happened there out of a total tour time of 5 hours. The unique thing about this tour is seeing Mandela's cell. If you have done other prison/goal tours, there is not a lot of value here. It lacked detail and context. When I attempted book, the tickets were sold out, but could be obtained from a third party at a significantly higher cost. I used Get Your Guide.

My Husband and I visited today the running of the trip was smooth (all the boat staff were polite) but we wasn't aware that there was the museum beforehand, I assumed this would be on robben island so we had no time to look around beforehand at the gate. So make sure you leave with plenty of time to have a look around and to read about Nelson Mandela (as this is the only time you will get anything information on him)
On the way to the island you watch a DVD regarding cape town, I felt this would have been a better opportunity to play a DVD with more details regarding the prison, as unfortunately you do not get time to read or look around Robben island when you are there as much as you would like.
Most rooms are laid out the same, the information is too much for you too read as you are moved on too quickly, the ex prisoner we had just gave us similar information, I didn't really feel he gave enough information about his experience (I appreciate it must have been hard being back there) i personally feel that Nelson Mandela's name is used more for people to buy into Robben Island.
Children simply shouldn't be allowed to come unless they are above an age where they understand what the trip is about and especially in this heat. It doesn't help when they are crying, whinging and whining on the bus in hot temperatures as you then can't hear the guide.
Our guide on the bus just sounded like she had no interest in the tour very monotone and sounded like she was reading off a script.
If anyone was to ask if its worth going I would say yes as it's an experience you wouldn't get elsewhere but I do think it needs a few improvements.
If I had an awareness on what the trip would have been like I dont think we would have attended.

We arrived at the V&A Waterfront's Robben Island Museum office and waited for over an hour for the boat to depart. Due to mechanical issues we were all ushered off the boat and given the option to reschedule. This however was not a possibility as we were leaving Cape Town after the trip. We were promised a refund at the office and completed the refund application with the assurance of a reimbursement. This all happened the 12th Dec 2019, and now more than a month later still no refund. We contacted the office several times to inquire about the refund but always the same response. You have to explain the scenario with all relevant invoice and reference numbers and then a quick "we will phone you asap", which of course never happens.

An iconic place crucial to the history of the country, of course. But we just wish that the tour could be better curated. One of the problems is that, on getting off the arrival boat, you are put onto buses (around 40 people each) and each bus is assigned a guide who you keep throughout the island visit. Its not a free flow visit either, you are bussed from place to place, but the biggest problem is that a group of 40 odd is just too big for the structure of the building and the guide. Smaller groups would make the experience so much better and more personal and wouldn't add that much to the cost. There could be more visual displays and information in the prison too.
Some reviewers here have criticised the ferries and the organisers. Our experience was the opposite. The departure building was clean and well organised, the staff were friendly and the boat trips were fine each way. And in fact I had stupidly bought tickets for two different departure times and they refunded one of my trips. Thanks for that.

We booked our tickets online prior to the visit and did not have any issue. You can park at the waterfront, just make sure to plan enough time to walk from the car park to the ferry departure point.
The crossing was relatively quick, and the tour of the island starts with the bus ride. The guide was extremely knowledgeable about the island history, and managed to make the subject very interesting. We has a little break towards the end in a cafe where you can buy snacks and drinks, as well as enjoy the view of Cape Town in the distance.
I found the prison tour interesting, but left feeling it could be much better... The guide was interesting, but sadly did not manage to make the subject as interesting to us as it was to him. As a former inmate he probably had a much different knowledge about the prison, and we felt a little bit rushed through various rooms that contained a lot of written information but not time to read it. But it's obviously incredible to see the cells and the condition in which the inmates were kept. The last part of the visit is seeing Nelson Mandela's cell while incarcerated on the island.
I would highly recommend this visit to anyone visiting Cape Town, but felt like the visit was slightly unbalanced between the very interesting bus ride and the prison tour which was not as interesting as it should be (and was slightly rushed)...
Also I would advise not to seat directly in the air conditioning exhaust while on the ferry, as it is set on maximum cold and can make you sick really quickly!

Good Day
On 21/12/2019 I purchased tickets online for my 3aunts for @9am. I was told book online as it gets very busy and there's no guarantee that they won't be full. It was for my one aunts birthday, therefore I booked for them. When they arrived that morning with their printed tickets, when scanned it said access denied. My aunt was then told to buy new tickets and told I can be refunded via my bank who then informs me it is not guaranteed that I will be refunded. I then called robben Island after 9am and was told that the person who advised my aunt to purchase new tickets shouldn't have advised that and in the same breath he says he is unable to assist, I should call at 10 to speak to a supervisor. So at 10 they said call at 11 at 11 they say call at 12, eventually when speaking to someonein charge, this person is so rude and irratable, my husband is trying to explain and he keeps saying get to the point as he is busy and then the line cuts. Each time I called I was put on hold for 5 minutes. So much of airtime wasted.
This was really upsetting and frustrating. I've been trying since 9am to get some sort of assistance but no luck. After my aunts trip she is told it will be sorted within 6 working days. After that lie was made she still was not refunded. Called about 40 times, with no help. Today she had to take off from work and travel to get there. Was made to wait until after 2. Still not satisfied. Truly pathetic, disgusting customer service. Think carefully before purchasing online. Waste of time and effort.

The ferry ride is a bonus component of the trip to Robben Island. The experience on the island, however, is a very controlled event and therefore less momentous than I had hoped it would be. That said, I would nonetheless recommend the trip and the time it takes to make it, this largely because I didn't speak to a single South African in Cape Town who had not visited the island multiple times. I found the trip and the talking points I was able to collect gave me a conversational gateway for authentic interaction with South African residents. Travel on a clear-skies day if possible, and be prepared for the island itself to present very differently in "character" than does the Mandela Gateway building on the mainland. Note: An unexpected highlight of the trip was in having a tour guide of the prison itself was a former prisoner on the island. The first-hand report of experience was deeply meaningful and moving.

This is a great place to go with particularly inspiring talk from the ex prisoner and an interesting bus tour on the island itself. This part is fully structured, your are never free to wander about and takes approx 2 hours (There are sandwiches and basic snacks and drinks for sale in a couple of places on the island itself. The boat journey out there takes about 20minutes. However if you want to see the museum exhibits on shore before departure you need about an hour ( and you must check in at least 30minutes before departure). We just missed a return ship and as a result sat on the boat for 50mins before departure waiting for the ferry to fill up. We then sailed for 20mins and had to wait 10mins for a berth in the harbour. Our entire trip took more than 5 hours. Be prepared!! The length of the return trip somewhat spoiled what had otherwise been a very interesting and moving experience.

The trip to Robben Island was fantastic, the experience of booking was anything but. After queueing for 45 minutes, we get to the ticket desk but cannot buy a ticket without a passport. How did we get into the country? As there is a two tier price, cheaper for native South Africans, presumably this is to stop white or other ethnic tourists posing as natives. Obviously the staff are visually impaired. Having returned and got tickets, we arrived at the appointed day and time, presented our tickets, and were again asked for our passports. Eventually a credit card was enough to get us on the ferry. Just beware when booking this trip.

The whole robben island experience was mediocre. After visiting the Constitutional Hill in Joburg just days ago, I felt that robben island was nowhere close (especially for the price that you paid for).
There is nothing to read at Robben Island itself - it's not a museum where you can freely walk on your own. All of the information are explained by the guide/ex-prisoner. Some bits were informative, but nothing close to Constitutional Hill where you can learn so much more about Nelson Mandela (and Gandhi as a bonus).

I don't remember either. Everything was extremely affordable due to our excellent exchange rates. I honestly never looked at prices of anything while i was there which sounds crazy because it’s usually crazy expensive in a lot of countries but this is an excellent country to visit and experience all things luxurious. Don’t Miss Robben Island. It is truly a must do.
