Like most visitors, we were organised when arriving at Cape Town with our tickets already purchased and were eagerly anticipating this to be one of the highlights. We had visited the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg - which was fantastic, including the permanent exhibition on Mandela - and so felt we had a great overview of both the history of Apartheid... Its well organized with the ferries out the island. It will take around 30 to 40 minutes. Once you arrive you will get on a bus. Each bus will have a guide and drive around the island, explaining its history for about 45 minutes. After your drive is over another guide will walk you through the prison explaining how the... This is an island that is well worth the visit. You not only get a beautiful view looking back at Table Bay (especially if it's a clear day) but, you get an inside look at the place where Nelson Mandela spent many, many year.

You realize the value of freedom the moment you land at this place. It's a prison converted into a museum, and the place where Mr. Mandela was kept for 36 long years! The guides are all ex prisoners and have tales to tell about each section and cell. A must visit place if you are in South Africa. It's recommend... More

The total round trip tour to Robben Island takes about 4 hours including the crossing (up to 45 minutes each way on the slower boat). You are met at the island by a tour guide who shows you the sights of the island that is now only inhabited by museum staff and their families. A key part of this tour... More

It took about 45 minutes on the boat to get there and almost everyone was incredibly sea sick by the time we arrived. The actual tour of the island was great and a very unique experience. It was very surreal.

It was fascinating to hear all of the history on the island. Your guide is a former political prisoner, which makes it even more interesting. Take the cataraman over from the V&A waterfront...it's faster, smoother, and nicer.

Great tour that provides context on the history of the island and the history of the prison. The tours sell out fast so buy your tickets in advance online.

Torrential rains shortened our tour, which was unfortunate but also provided a weirdly appropriate backdrop for such a depressing place. While our travel agent bought our tickets several weeks in advance, you can get them a few days before by dropping in at the museum at the Victoria and Albert Wharf. I wish we had spent more time at the... More
