A must for all visitors to SA - more powerful than any book or internet site, really hits home when you visit. This review however is on the trip itself and not the history shown and I must say for such an iconic tourist and local attraction, the organisation was terrible. Ferries have no scheduled time for departure or arrival,... More

This is a must do when visiting Cape Town, know that I have done it I would not need to go back, but would recommend it for people who have not gone before. We were taken around by an ex-prisoner who was excellent to listen to. Glad we got to see the prion, it surroundings and Mandelas cell.

Be prepared for a crowded boat and tour bus. We managed to get separated from the rest of our party. I would have liked a longer time to be able to wander around on my own to really get a sense of the place. One's experience may also depend upon your guides.

The two impressions I kept from my trip to Robben Island is the papers flying around and the relatively unkempt maintenance. The trip to Robben Island is nice as are the sightings of penguins, seals and commorants nesting at the harbour entrance. The history of this Island, first as a prison, then a leper colony and thereafter the incarceration of... More

We left the Robben Island museum at the V&A waterfront. The ferry crossing was good and we arrived in about 30 mins. When we disembarked the boat and walked along the quay loudspeakers relayed a message to get on the buses at the end of the quay. Once we were on the buses we then were then told by a... More

So rich with history! The tour guide is a former prisoner and gives you first hand account of what it was like to be housed at Robben island. It's gives you a taste of the real South Africa.

The boat journey was better than expected with whales for company. We then went on a very interesting coach journey to see the lime mine, the leper cemetery and the beautiful vista of Cape Town from the island. We then were welcomed by Sipho who took us round the high security prison and gave us some insight of how it... More

Taking a ferry and tour of Robben Island is a must for anybody interested in history and anybody wanting to learn more about South Africa and it’s social/political structure. Definitely schedule your tour online beforehand then you can show up and hop on the ferry. It’s a 45min boat ride to the island and it includes with a bus tour... More

Others have described the detail. Overall, a moving tribute to a great man, Nelson Mandela, who spent the best part of two decades on the island but was still able to forgive his persecutors. Good value for ferry crossings and two guided tours, one by a former political prisoner about the prison, and another as a bus tour of the... More

A must see when visiting Cape Town. The boat crossing is an experience. The guides are knowledgeable and the ex prisoners provide a great and factual insight.
