It no longer functions as a city hall, but serves as a venue for cultural and other events. The Edwardian building was built in 1905. The design and even the lime stone construction material was all imported from Britain. During the early 1900s similar style buildings in the British colonies overseas underscored the power of the great empire. Britain not only ruled the waves, but also the land.

Remarkable is the modest sculpture of Nelson Mandela on the balcony facing the Parade. Placed at the exact place where he addressed the people of South Africa after his release from prison in 1990.

I cannot believe how many years it took to visit this magnificent building for the first time. It really is a stupendous classic of the period. The new Nelson Mandela exhibition is worth a visit on its own and you can even stand next to his statue at the exact place he gave that famous speech all those years ago.

I went to the City Hall twice during my stay in Cape Town. The first was to walk on the balcony where Nelson Mandela gave his first speech after being released from prison in 1990. The second was to hear a performance by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Although I am not an expert on acoustics, the hall I believe was quite good in this regard as was the performance.

this is a great location, the town hall is splendid, by the side of a very large open square, the statue of Mandela brings you back to a very great moving speech

I remember this building for Nelson Mandela's speech after he was released from prison. There was so much anticipation. He stuck to his guns and read the same speech given at his trial after which he was given a life sentence in 1962. It was almost as if he was daring the government to lock him up again...that was the measure of the man, Today, his statue stands in the spot where the speech was given.

Walked by the building a few times last week and very much enjoyed the architectural design. The building is very unique in comparison to the other ones surrounding it. Definitely enjoyed walking and looking at it.

If the Castle of Good Hope is a symbol of Dutch colonial power, then the Town Hall building opposite embodies British rule. The building was so symbolically important that the British were not too lazy to deliver from the metropolis not only lamps and fittings, but also limestone from the English Bath! A stone was carried for 10 thousand kilometers! The importance of the Town Hall was due to the Anglo-Boer War that had just ended. The building in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style was erected in 1905. The elegant tower above the central building was set up later - in 1923. It contains a carillon of 39 bells. But all this is the work of bygone days. For the African majority, the Boers and the British are all the same - colonialists. For the black majority, it is important that the freed Mandela delivered his first public speech from the balcony of the Town Hall. Although the past regularly makes itself felt. The tower clock is still striking the Westminster quarter. However, this already has a cultural, not a political meaning, because the Town Hall in the original sense is no longer there, the offices have moved to the civic center of Cape Town, breaking continuity with the colonial past and in this. Only various events, concerts and so on take place here.

We went to a classic concert rehearsal and it was great. First arrived, first serve so we could get a balcony. The sound travels well so we had an excellent time.

The City Hall building in Cape Town is a magnificent architectural work. There is a life size statue of Nelson Mandela at the site where he gave his first speech after he was released from prison. The square in front of the city hall is huge and has several interesting buildings all around it. Worth visiting.

Beautiful building with lots of history. Mandela' gave his first speech here in 1990 after serving 27 years in prison. The Parade grounds are across the street. Vendor stalls here. Stop and take a few pictures and then continue on to the Castle of Good Hope just a few walking minutes away.
