About Wanderlust - Cape Town on Foot Walking Tour
Enjoy a living, noisy and intriguing city as we manoeuvre through its busy streets. History, culture and architecture are woven into our story. We find our way to the colourful Bo-Kaap, the country's oldest Muslim area, (it is recommended that ladies carry a scarf to cover the shoulders, in the event that we enter a mosque), step into St. George's Anglican Cathedral and enjoy a stroll through the Company's Gardens. We visit Groote Kerk, the country's oldest church and allow the story of slavery to unfold as we pass the former Slave Lodge and look at the Slave Memorial on Church Square. The walk then leads to the Grand Parade, lined by the City Hall where Mandela gave his first speech as a free man, and the Castle built on the city's original shoreline. The story of District Six is told, historic murals and grand art deco buildings are discovered. The walk ends on bustling Greenmarket Square, dominated by the Methodist Church and Old Townhouse. The walks last about 2.5 hours and can be handled by anybody, there is no steep uphill except for a gentle rise towards Bo-Kaap. The tour takes place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, starting at 11h00 and are conducted in English and/or German, depending on the composition of the group. No prior booking is necessary during the summer season, although in the winter months from May to end September it is advisable to book. Just come to meeting venue in 66 Loop Street/ cnr Hout Street to purchase your ticket. The fee for adults is R 250.00 per person (cash only). Accompanied children under 14 walk free. N.B. It is advisable you come by taxi. Cape Town's streets are heavily congested and parking is extremely difficult to find

Ursula was our guide, and having lived in the city forever, she has seen it evolve and is a fantastic and passionate guide. Very safety-conscious, she will take you to the real Cape Town, unraveling its vibrant and complex history. Full of tips with great eateries and hidden markets, this is really a must-do tour if you visit Cape Town! As our group was with Germans and English speakers, she very effortlessly juggled between both languages making it very easy to follow for everyone.

You really cannot beat this as a way to discover and begin to understand this fascinating, multi-layered city. Ursula knows this place like the back of her hand but, for all her obvious erudition, makes her commentary chatty, amusing and accessible. We started at the old diamond museum in the centre of town, itself a fascinating place. Then we proceeded through the vividly painted Bo Kaap. Back in the town centre we wove through the traffic, taking in churches, banks, the magnificent old post office and the parliament building. We would never have found half of these places without her. It is her obvious love of the city which comes through strongly - she has a keen eye for architecture, old or modern, and encourages you to really look at things in a way you cannot if you have your nose in a guide book. More like a favourite aunt than a tour guide, by the end of the tour we felt so attached to her we didn’t want to let her go, and then we realised that our two hour tour had run on into nearer three hours. Thank you, Ursula, you gave us an unforgettable insight into you city.

It is truly wonderful and encouraging to read your warm review. But it is you and your own spirited participation that turned the walk into a unique experience. I thank you for sharing your thoughts and hope that the memories will linger for a long while.

Ursula was a brilliant guide who shared a fantastic depth and breadth of knowledge about Cape Town with our group of three - two Germans and one American, whereby she adeptly switched between languages to conduct a tour for us all! Absolutely worth the price - and we were able to see and experience far more than a City Sightseeing bus tour (which I also enjoy, but that seems far less useful for seeing all of Cape Town's nooks, markets and small streets). Highly recommend Wednesdays as there are several markets happening on this day, so you really feel the life of the city center.

This three hour walk might be a little strenuous for elderly people, but it's fun to do it with Ursula. Her knowledge about Cape Town, collected in over 25 years of living in this place, allows almost every question .... should there be any left after the tour. An answer you'll get anyway. Very recommendable. Und bestens geeignet für Deutsch sprechende Besucher der Stadt, die nicht ganz so fit mit der englischen Sprache sind.

Thanks for your warm words about the walk. With every tour I guide, I also learn from my guests and for that I am always grateful. I also enjoy 'hopping' between English and German, and am amazed at the English knowledge of many of my guests. Thanks for taking the time to review the walk and enjoy the remainder of your holiday.
