Uthando (Love) South Africa is an internationally award winning, unique and innovative Non Profit and Fair Trade certified company. The aim of Uthando is to raise funds and other forms of assistance for community development projects in South Africa. Uthando runs tours as daily scheduled tours AND tailormade private tours (for groups of any size). We take visitors into the townships (impoverished areas created during Apartheid on the outskirts of Cape Town) to visit incredible community development projects. We shine a light on the remarkable people and projects that are helping to build the new South Africa at grass roots level. On our tours we tell the remarkable story and history of South Africa and its brutal past, we discuss pertinent issues confronting our people, and provide an inspiring sense of hope through the efforts of dedicated grass roots leaders. Our tours are authentic, meaningful, non-invasive, respectful and very importantly beneficial to the communities being visited. The cost of our tours incorporate contributions to the projects that we visit and can thus also be considered philanthropic in nature.

I had heard about these types of township tours previously but was concerned that they might be exploitive. I didn't want to be an intruder in someone's home. But, I also did want to see both sides of Cape Town... My sister-in-law told me about Uthando and their great work. With her recommendation and after reviewing their website, I decided... More

You will no doubt have read about/ been told the top things to do in Cape Town; enjoy the panoramic views from Table Mountain, shop in the V&A, take the ferry and tour of Robben Island, dip your toes in the (icy) sea at Camps Bay beach and enjoy fine dining at many of Cape Town's glamorous establishments.....BUT please don't... We recently made a half day tour of the Townships near Cape Town, South Africa with James Fernie, founder and Director of a charitable organization called Uthando (South Africa) Social Development Projects. Uthando is the Xhosa and Zulu word for "love," and this was evident in the way James was greeted in each of the projects he took us to... More

Our Uthando 'tour' was the most moving half-day of our entire two week trip. We visited a day care/nursery school in Gugulethu, a cooperative called Ekhaya Ekasi and a senior center both in Kayelitsha. Seeing the organizations in action and meeting the people whose lives are touched by the work of these organizations was heart warming and incredibly meaningful for... More

I was dreading the thought of a 'township tour' as I thought it would be patronizing and voyeuristic. This tour was most definitely not like this at all. I would say it is the ONLY way to get a vaguely accurate sense of what life is like in a township. Our guide, James, was knowledgeable and passionate and provided a... More

If you want to do a tour that really helps you understand the challenges of a life in a township, go with Uthando. You will visit at least three social projects out of the forty supported by the NGO and if you feel compelled to you are invited to donate at the end of the tour. We went to a... More

My experience visiting four of the Uthando supported projects was the highlight of my Cape Town visit. Xolani took us to visit a community garden where the women grow vegetables that are sold to restaurants in the city. I was fascinated that they use the garden left overs (tops, vines etc) to produce the gas they use to fire the... More

An amazing trip to enlighten tourists in a positive manor rather than the standard township tours! A way of seeing the truth about South Africa and the positive work being undertaken by inspirational individuals within townships. The children, women and older citizens were all welcoming and their smiles infectious. An emotional yet positive encounter. A special mention to the guides,... More

Who wouldn't be moved by children growing healthy veg for their families in the township…from little more than sand? This was a fascinating - and unmissable - trip, seeing the day-to-day realities of life in the townships. Uthando helps bring real, philanthropic hope with pragmatic and caring projects that help feed, provide medical care and bring dignity to peoples' lives.... More
