About Uthando Tours
Uthando (Love) South Africa is an internationally award winning and unique Non Profit Organisation and Fair Trade certified company. Uthando raises funds and other forms of assistance for a broad range of inspiring and innovative community development projects in South Africa. Uthando runs tours as daily scheduled tours AND tailormade private tours (for groups of any size). We take visitors into the townships (impoverished areas created during Apartheid on the outskirts of Cape Town) to visit incredible community development projects. We shine a light on the remarkable people and projects that are helping to build the new South Africa at grass roots level. On our tours we tell the remarkable story and history of South Africa and its brutal past, we discuss pertinent issues confronting our people, and provide an inspiring sense of hope through the efforts of dedicated grass roots leaders. Our tours are authentic, meaningful, non-invasive, respectful and very importantly beneficial to the communities being visited. The cost of our tours incorporate contributions to the projects that we visit and can thus also be considered philanthropic in nature. UTHANDO IS FAR MORE THAN JUST A NON PROFIT COMPANY, IT IS A LABOUR OF LOVE DEDICATED TO HELPING CREATE A MORE JUST AND EQUITABLE BRAVE NEW WORLD !

Extremely well organized tour. Deep knowledge of the program and history of the area. At Kinder Garden, you could feel the warmth of the place with the very committed staff.

So much to say. If you only have one day in Cape Town - experience Uthando. If you struggle with the ethics of township tours- experience Uthando. If you want to see the beauty of hope and transformation rather than the dehumanizing exhibition of poverty- these are your people. Xolani is much more than a guide. He is a historian, a sage, and an advocate for the programs happening with Uthando. And all delivered with humor. We did this experience with our 11 and 14 yr old children. All of the sites we visited did a fine job of teen engagement. We ended our day wishing we could have another half day with Xolani. We were so inspired and enlivened by the love being done. *a side note for U.S. travelers. There is, sadly, a real current of fear being sewn regarding safety of travel in South Africa, particularly urban settings. In general our family has practiced the same street smarts we do in Chicago. I have never felt threatened or unsafe. And most importantly - there wasn’t a moment on this tour where my family’s wellbeing was ever a concern. Come! See! Love!

My wife and I had a very enlightening experience. We learned quite a bit about the conditions that so many have to endure everyday along with the work that some are doing to make improvements. We never felt unsafe and strongly encourage others who visit South Africa to make some time to take a tour with Uthando

We are thankful for all the insights we were allowed to gain during the tour with Uthando. The visits to the townships are conducted in a very respectful manner and our guide provided us with loads of background information about South Africa's society, culture and history, which is important to know. We visited four different projects that help improve everyday life for the local communities. I can absolutely recommend the Uthando tours, it's a must-do when spending time in Cape Town.

A must do for every visitor to Africa. This well conducted tour, is balanced and totally unintrusive, respecting the individual projects and their members. One cannot but marvel how James and his team are transforming and uplifting communities who have so little. Lets not turn a blind eye to poverty, but support organisations who forego wealth for conscience. I could not recommend more highly.
