Uthando (Love) South Africa is an internationally award winning, unique and innovative Non Profit and Fair Trade certified company. The aim of Uthando is to raise funds and other forms of assistance for community development projects in South Africa. Uthando runs tours as daily scheduled tours AND tailormade private tours (for groups of any size). We take visitors into the townships (impoverished areas created during Apartheid on the outskirts of Cape Town) to visit incredible community development projects. We shine a light on the remarkable people and projects that are helping to build the new South Africa at grass roots level. On our tours we tell the remarkable story and history of South Africa and its brutal past, we discuss pertinent issues confronting our people, and provide an inspiring sense of hope through the efforts of dedicated grass roots leaders. Our tours are authentic, meaningful, non-invasive, respectful and very importantly beneficial to the communities being visited. The cost of our tours incorporate contributions to the projects that we visit and can thus also be considered philanthropic in nature.

This tour was the best thing I did in my three weeks travel through middle east and africa. It was phenomenal going through the townships and seeing the amazing and inspiring people that try to make the most out of their current situations. This tour was so moving and inspiring. South Africa is a country of beauty, history, but also of deep poverty. By touring with Uthando we were able to get a closer look at daily life while also providing support to organizations who battle back against the poverty in Cape Town. It was a moving experience and added important depth and realism to our trip.

The Uthando experience James and Xolani provided for our family was one of the highlights of our visit to South Africa. We were greeted warmly at three of their projects and came away from each visit inspired and hopeful for the future. An extraordinary and informative morning -- highly recommended.

Our visit included three stops: women who were learning various crafts in order to make money, two pre-school classes, and a senior center. All three were wonderful experiences that should be part of any tourist visit to South Africa because it balances the other components - historic sites such as Robben Island, natural beauty of mountains and waterfalls, and animal... My wife and I had the pleaseure of taking this tour in April. We were picked up at our hotel by our very enthusiastic guide Xolani, who gave us a quick round up of what we would be doing that day. He was both informative and passionate about everything to do with this fantastic foundation. We visited the garden project,... More

I could not have imagined my trip to Cape Town without this experience. We went on a lot of other fantastic adventures - hiking, spas, wine tasting, etc. but this was by far my favorite day. James and his company do such a wonderful job of immersing you in an authentic experience. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about his... More

I found Uthando on the internet also. Uthando is a nonprofit company that oversees many different community projects in the townships In South Africa. I was interested in going but was a bit concerned. There has recently been criticism about this new kind of tourism where visitors are feeling enriched by going to the townships and gawking at the poor... More

James was an amazing tour guide - he took us around to many different community organizations within the townships. He has a personal relationship with every person we met along the way, which provided for very rich conversations. The organizations, themselves, were unbelievable. The level of joy, discipline, commitment, and love showcased by each and every one really left an... More

The Uthando experience is essential to your Cape Town visit. James has created a program that provides locals + tourists with an opportunity to learn about the townships by visiting existing cultural programs within the communities. The experience was eye opening, authentic + most importantly, did not feel like poverty tourism + instead a very respectful + educational visit to... More
