Description:

The Footsteps to Freedom walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town...

The Footsteps to Freedom walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town tells the story of Cape Town and its people. We use streets, buildings, monuments, memorials and the passing street-scene as props develop a story of Cape Town and South Africa's dramatic past. Stories of Dutch and British colonial rule, slavery and apartheid, and finally our peaceful transition to a real democracy. We gather before 10h30 (Mon-Sat) in the lobby of the Taj Cape Town Hotel, located in centre of Cape Town's cultural and historic precinct. At 10h30 the 2½ hr walking tour starts from the steps of the Bishop Robert Gray Memorial, adjacent Taj Cape Town hotel.

Our Footsteps to Freedom City Walking Tour through the city centre of Cape Town was fascinating and gave us a detailed understanding of the history of the city and its people. Our guide, Karen, was not only knowledgeable but enthusiastic and flexible despite the constant downpour which made the tour thoroughly enjoyable for us and the kids.

Ivor is an interesting man and my wife and I loved listening to him share his thoughts and experiences on Cape Town and South Africa in relation to Mandela's life. Highly recommend this walking tour.

My girlfriend, her sister and I had the blessed opportunity of touring Cape Town with Ivor. We were all in awe at Ivor's unparalleled knowledge of the Motherland as well his deep appreciation and personal connection with all things Cape Town. Spanning from settlers first finding South Africa to Mandela's fight against Apartheid to facts about the expansive floral kingdom,... More

Our first morning in Cape Town, we had the good fortune to spend 4 hours with Ivor...a guide for FOOTSTEPS TO FREEDOM. My husband and I were quite impressed with the wide range of his knowledge interspersed with personal reflections because he lived through some of the time period that was covered. We learned about the culture, the history and... More

I came into South Africa knowing very little of this wonderful country and thanks to Garth, I have learned so much more than I every could have expected! Garth did an amazing job helping us understand the history of SA in the framework of a global context. His information was very enlightening to see how events around the world have... More

The information was conveyed in an almost story telling way that made it very easy to absorb all the details. There was only the two of us with our guide Ivor. This was a wonderful opportunity to hear all the information and ask as many questions as we wanted. The tour was a good mix of walking and stopping to... More

The best, most interesting walking discovery tour ever. The 2 hour walking tour of central Cape Town with Ivor Shaskolsky just flew in no time. Ivor's knowledge & passion of Cape Town, its buildings & its history is enthralling. Learnt more in 2 hours with Ivor than I did in a year at school.

This is the best historic tour I have ever been on. Ever. And I'm a world history teacher! His knowledge is deep and broad and he mixes talking with walking and touring, adding cultural places and knowledge as part of the history. He picked us up at the airport immediately stared telling us interesting facts and then on the way... More

We booked a private tour of central Cape Town with Garth rather than a group tour as our small party of 4 included elderly parents who needed to walk at their own pace with occasional stops to sit and the opportunity to rest and refresh. My mother also suffers with an acute hearing problem so face to face contact was... More

I chose to take the Footsteps to Freedom tour during my visit to Capetown in November, 2014 mainly because the founder used to be the CEO of a student travel organization I had worked with in the day. That indicated to me that it would be a professional outfit. Indeed my expectations were with rewarded with a couple of hours... More
