Following an informative short film intro there is a terrific guided tour through the history of unsuccessful heart transplantation culminating with the actual operating theatres where the first human heart transplant was done, complete with very lifelike mannequins performing it. Pricey by SA levels for overseas visitors at 350 rand each but actually worth it.

The museum is incredibly interesting from historical, cultural , medical and scientific bases. It is a tribute to Christain Barnard ;a genius, rising from poor roots, having to learn a foreign language :English to get to medical school, He was able to get funding and equipment from the U.S.A., where he studied. This eventually enabled him to do the first... More

If you have used the open top bus you can have a free shuttle to this museum. It is well worth a visit especially to those of us who well remember the event. The reconstructions are absolutely realistic and the information available really takes you right back to the action as it happened.

We enjoyed a really interesting visit to the "Christiaan Barnard" Museum where the first Heart transplant actually took place. Personal letters, videos and a full size lay out of both operating theatres used are there to be viewed - together with the original equipment. Tour is conducted by a guide who explains the human stories with interesting additions about the... More

The models were very realistic and made you think that you were in the operating theater with them on that special day.

I visited the museum for a second time and it was as awesome as before . Our guide , Beth was very very well informed . I phoned and spoke to Piet Lotter about the timeslots. As a starting point , 10 out of 10 ! He was soooo friendly. Even the security at the gates directed you exactly where... More
