The landscape is wonderful with great ocean and mountain views; a great drive but note there is a small toll to pay. We came down the coast on the east and went back on the west side of the peninsula. A great day trip.
Wonderful route with stunning viewpoints along the way. The coesn't cost much either for a toll road.
Highlight: the view into Hout Bay is nicer on the way from the south to the north - the good side for the viewpoints too.
Caution: the street...More

This drive is worth taking even if you don’t need to get from Hout Bay to Nordhoek. Yes there is a small toll fee that is totally worth it. The drive is magnificent and it’s easy to stop at the viewing area if you’d like...More

The botanical garden can take all day to visit. If you want to also visit Chapman Peak you probably will need to visit the garden for only 1/2 day to leave you enough time for both but is it feasible. I see many current reviews stating it is open. The closure seemed to have happened in 2017. I cannot answer your question about the beach however. Definitely worth the drive. Watch out for the hundreds of cyclists who share that road with you. Go slow and enjoy the view
Is Chappers open again? The web site says closed but hopefully it has not been updated?? It's 5 weeks until we leave for SA and was really hoping to start the holiday with a nice walk on Noordhoek Beach on Christmas Day afternoon, easy to get to from Hout Bay!

Yes, Chapmand Peak Drive is now permanently open. The refurbishments and upgrade have made a difference and we had hardly any closures for weather last winter – but then the winter was also the best I have known for many years. Although we seem to be paying a bit for it right now – some lovely fine spells but then we get a few days cold and wet.. But I’m sure it will be beautiful by next month!
Chapman's Peak Drive toll (3 Replies)
Our plan is to take our time to drive leisurely down the Atlantic seaboard from the V & A Waterfront all the way down the west side of the Cape Penisular to Hout Bay, then onto Chapman's Peak Drive. We will be making frequent stops along the way. So we will leave the Cape of Good Hope for another day, because it would be too rush. From all the information I have read, after Chapman's Peak Drive, we can return to the city via Ou Kaapse Way. The question is if we would rather return...More

Yes. It's R30 each way. The toll booths in either direction are at the Hout Bay end.
Nervous about driving Chapman's Peak Drive (12 Replies)
I'm generally a little nervous driving along coastlines with steep drop-offs and kind of narrow roads. At the same time, I would hate to miss the scenic beauty of this drive. Based on the pictures, the drive doesn't look too nerve wracking. Any thoughts?

Here's a plan - drive on it going South. Then you are next to the hillside, not next to the precipitous drop to certain death. Well, that's a little bit of 'hype' - but it is a little friendlier southbound.
