- Pat ChubekaKuruman, South Africa7 contributionsAbsolutely worth returning and bringing even a bigger crew with me, to experience such history of our country. We took so many photos, the whole place is amazing. Such a rich history of Kimberley a town not just of diamonds but one of many firsts. The old town is such a treat, especially after the movie. Mr David you, my guy, are the Real Deal. Thank you so very muchVisited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 1, 2023
- ArshadJohannesburg, South Africa78 contributionsWish I had diamond.Wonderful museum with an informative guide called David who was a blast - pardon the mining joke. My son wanted to see the Big Hole. A real treat for anyone passing through to Cape Town or the other way round to Johannesburg. Stay overnight for a rest.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 18, 2023
- Kim WindvogelJohannesburg, South Africa99 contributionsDiamonds in the Big HoleI've been to the Big Hole before, more than 20 years ago with my parents. But this time I returned with my partner. We arrived just as the previous tour guide had started his tour, so we decided to grab a beer at a local restaurant and wander around the old town before rejoining the tourguide on his next outing. Entrance cost around 140 zar per person for the tour. The story of the big hole is essentially the story of Kimberley and capitalism. The big hole is the biggest man made hole made, ever. Purely for the extraction of diamonds, this period of time was called the Diamond Rush. The tour starts off with a very informative video, that reenacts all the major events of that time and that contextualises the Big Hole for those who will be viewing it. When I came here 25 years ago, the red bridge that is now the lookout point for the hole had not been built, so the experience for those traveling there now, post the De Beers Renovations of the aughts is completely different and definitely upgraded. If you find yourself in Kimberley, take an hour to go view the place that helped establish Kimberley as a town.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 5, 2024
- thais kCopenhagen, Denmark1,635 contributionsBrilliant experienceThe actual price for this visit was ZAR140, and that will include a 20 min movie, a guide to show you around and you can walk the "old town". Its a brilliant museum and worth the price indeed. To get some knowledge about the hole itself, and the history of mining in Kimberley was fantastic, and the idea with the old houses to get an idea of miners lives was exiting. You should indeed treat yourself to this museum if you are in Kimberley. There are shops and refreshments at the museum.Visited January 2024Traveled soloWritten January 17, 2024

David our guide made it very entertaining and informative engaging all those on the tour with fact and fiction - a very funny man. The replica township is a must either before or after giving you that true insight of stepping back in time. The pub in the “town” centre offer excellent pub grub.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 6, 2024

And I must say with this visit our tourguide, David was excellent!! We really enjoyed it and even our 5 year old was listening and enjoying the experience. It is a bit expensive, but everything is clean and neat. Recommend updating your prices on The Big Hole website. A must visit!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 16, 2024

At R 70 per person just to walk out to see the Big hole this is an expensive experience. The view is nice but not wow. If you are into birding the opportunity to see the Bradfields swift at least adds some value. The full tour promises better value for money but is still not cheap.
However if you count the extensive, and free, museum around the Big Hole as part of the package then paying for the view doesn't seem so bad.

In my years as unofficial “tour guide” to scores of family and friends, both local and international, in the past 32 years, visiting the Big Hole is another in the heartbreaking experiences that Kimberley has become. The entrance price to the Big Hole and “mine” is ridiculous in the South-African context. The introductory film, which confusingly makes no distinction between fact and folklore, is so faint you can hardly see a thing. All exhibits behind that paywall have been stripped of their information plaques, so you have no idea what you are looking at. The fake underground mine area no longer has a tour guide, but no information plaques have been placed in its stead. The underground fake explosion no longer emits any fake fire, just noise. The open museum buildings are very poorly maintained and the exhibits inside are fading due to lack of temperature control. The really interesting exhibits of photos taken during early excavation days, the building of the “Long Cecil” cannon, the wonderful diorama showing how the “koppie” was excavated until it became an open cast mine, all gone. The interactive displays such as the grease belt which you could operate at a price, all broken. Of the tram ride you can only say the tram works, for a short ride along a filthy part of town, turning at a taxi rank. The tram itself falling apart. This is a museum with wonderful potential and still worth a visit. However, being of the wrong heritage at this time, it is badly run, probably underfunded and will fall into ruins with the rest of the city unless a miracle happens.

We had such an awesome time visiting the big hole under our travel guide, David. He made the whole experience come alive. We were filled with excitement from the beginning. He retold the story of the Kimberly with such dedication and passion, we felt we were part of it. We will definitely visit this attraction again.

This was my second tour with David. The first time was by myself, David had us in stitches. He was very funny, yet the facts and the explanation of it was brilliant. I sent my family pictures and videos. They made me promise them that we will go as a family. We went on Sunday and my wife and daughter can't stop talking about David and the way he guided the tour. Once again a job well done. David's really one of Kimberly's diamonds...(round brilliant)

A very pleasant experience. Our guide, David, made the tour fun and interactive. He quickly had the whole crowd engaged and entertained. Well done, sir!
The museum was informative and covered many aspects of the Kimberley mining story. The old town and trams were great and the service staff around the village were friendly. I could easily have spent the day there, if I had read and explored with more depth.
I definitely recommend that you visit the amazing Big Hole

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Big Hole. We chose to do the guided tour, it costs more but is certainly worth it. Our tour guide, David, is an absolute gem of a man and worth his weight in diamonds. His sense of humour and anecdotes kept our little group of 4 interested and entertained throughout. He made the history of diamond mining come alive for us. Thank you, David, you made our day!

On a friend's recommendation I did the historical tour which includes 20 mins movie.
David Lesego was the guide I was told to specifically look for and the man didn't disappoint.
He had an in depth knowledge of the city's history, quoting dates and giving a national and global context to the what happened in Kimberley.
His tour was infused with humour and allowed you to stop him at any time to ask questions.

We took a quick viewing right next to the Protea Hotel where we were staying. The staff was amazing and very informing and friendly. Went on a tour with a guide (David) he had a great sense of humor, very passionate about his job, and great people skills. Would definitely recommend for a family trip, or a short left. I really didn't want to leave it was absolutely beautiful.

Once again we were extremely happily welcomed to the Big Hole Complex from the car guard, security and ticket office. Everyone was super happy to see us. The sad part is COVID has killed many of the smaller businesses at the complex, however the big hole museum is in full swing and we were very happily entertained. The Big Hole is looking amazing and all the exhibits are world class. Definitely worth spending time there if you are in Kimberley. We all loved it.

Entrance to the Big Hole complex is free. The complex has some shops and restaurants and nicely done museum displays. You only pay to actually view the Hole itself or to go on the mine tour.
