Situated between Wilderness and Vic Bay where you can simply go for lunch or rent a kayak. Always the highlight of our trip to the Wilderness. The trick is to get there early (before 9am at least) so that you can drive into the parking area at the bottom. When it gets full the gate is closed and you need to wait your turn. They don’t ask for payment but it’s nice to give the car guards a good tip because they do such a fabulous job. If you are lucky enough to get in, your car is safe for the entire day. We take our own inflatable dingy and pump it up in the parking area. Then it’s packed with our cooler bag, umbrella, lilo’s, towels etc. making sure there is enough space for ourselves of course. Aways such fun and it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing it will always be nice. Once on the river you can paddle to the main sandbank (beach) or go down stream where there are little spots to stop along the way. There is also a waterfall that you can paddle to if you’re in a kayak. I recommend the beach because it never gets crowded and you can go for walks to the river mouth. A lovely way to spend your day but be sure to take everything you will need for the day. No ablution blocks so please keep that in mind too.

There are no more Kaaiman (a species of monitor lizards) in the river. So it is safe to swim, where possible or kayak, particularly at a point where the river becomes wider and its mouth finds the ocean. The Kaaiman river is one of many that is meandering through the Cape Fold Mountains south of South Africa's central plateau. Some of the gorges it formed are of spectacular beauty. In the past a formidable obstacle for both indigenous people as well as the European settlers. The latter eventually managed to build stable bridges. The railway bridge (now defunct) near George is one them, meanwhile a historic attraction.

Good hiking options northwest of Wilderness.

What a great spot this...it looks like this has been realised as they opened a Restuarant there in December'19...a great river to explore on Kayaks, visit the waterfall or paddle to the mouth.....and when done and dusted grab a burger and beer at the restaurant....a great day guarenteed!

Booked two Kayaks with Justin and the experience was awesome. He arrived on time with our two kayaks. Unspoiled, natural beauty. Suggest going mid tide or low tide to get the best experience! Our son of 8 was able to kayak on his own and managed easily!

As you approach Wilderness on the N2 from Geaoge, you cross the Kaaiman's Gorge. All the cars go racing by over the bridge.
Slow down. Turn off to the right to the Kaaimans River. A Beautiful, peaceful spot where you can park and go for a short walk across the river on a causeway. When the tide is coming in, the sea pushes the river back up the gorge.
There is a picnic spot there, but I have never seen it used.
Take a break and enjoy it,

Beautiful surroundings and scenery. Kayaking between the mountains in a breathtakingly stunning area. Pack a picnic basket or have a bite at Kaaiman's Restaurant. Highly recommended.

Had to do this canoe trip twice in one week. The beauty of the rocks, plant , trees and wild live is good for the soul. Drifted in the quiet waters and did not want it to end. Great for families.

its beautiful down at the bridge but the walk there does not feel safe until you make it to the other side :)
Great and quite spots to have a picnic or a good read on a hot afternoon while basking in the sun.
