I did not expect to find such a large, modern shopping mall in Soweto. The are a multitude of stores and some very nice restaurants as well as a couple of fast food outlets including KFC. The mall is modern and we felt very safe during our visit there. On the outside of the mall, near the main entrance is a very lifelike statue of a bull elephant that is worth noting. While malls like this can be found around the world, it was worthwhile visiting this mall to note how its presence assists the local economy. It speaks volumes about the strides that South Africa has made since the end of apartheid.

This mall is trying to cater for the entire South African demographic. They have succeeded in this however, it turns out to be the same as just about any other mall making for a rather mediocre experience. Not sure if I would travel all the way there again because sadly it's bland and nothing outstanding. If they really want the likes of me to return it needs a one of a kind restaurant or shop.

Whist Maponya Mall is just another large shopping mall, it is worth a visit, if only to see the large, and surprisingly lifelike statue of a charging bull elephant, and the statue commemorating the death of Hector Pieterson. If you are looking for a place to eat there is a stylish branch of Primi Piatti, and a News Cafe - the former being a good choice for a civilised evening meal if you are staying in nearby Orlando West, which is a 10 minute drive away. Also a large movie theatre. Security at the mall is fine.

Keep in mind this mall is located in Soweto. It is a full service mall and it has many restaurants and clothing stores and a few boutiques you may like. They also have a movie and club that says open kinda late as well.
