All reviews mandela square great man hard rock cafe huge statue larger than life shopping mall butcher shop surrounded by restaurants nice place people watch sandton city take pictures lots of shops steak great shopping safe place high end
If you are in the Sandton area you should definitely check out this square. Get a picture with the Mandela statue and enjoy your pick from a bunch of restaurants that look over the square and fountain.
Though it was more representative of the local culture, but is not. The only south African thing you get to see is a 10 mt tall statue of Nelson Mandela. If you are thinking on having a fine dinner (mostly international food), this is a...More
This is the place you need to see if you travel to Johannesburg. It’s a bit out of center of Joburg. Those traveling by train, there’s Gautrain station just meters away.
If you stay in Sandton, most hotels offer complimentary shuttle bus to and from...More

Organizing our 1st safari trips in SA, Zimbabwe and Botswana (10 Replies)
Trying to research and read a lot before I finalize my travel plan. Still learning so please bear with my limited knowledge here. A Couple of basic points: 1) Our main focus is wild safaris. 2) My husband doesn't want to drive at this age. 3) We don't have much vacation days. Also I take care of my old mother. So I cannot take too long time off. 4) It has to be a 9 day trip + International travel time from US Want to go to JNB first. Stay one day to see Nelson Mandela Square and...More

Is there any reason why you want to go to KZN? You mention your priority is game viewing - unless there is a specific reason why you want to go to KZN, I would choose The Kruger National Park area. There are good game reserves in KZN, but in my opinion don't come near to what's on offer in the Kruger. Botswana is fabulous game viewing, but expensive - especially the Okavango, but if your budget can stretch to including the Okavango, do include it. With just 9 days, I would suggest: 1...More
Half day feel of Jo'burg!? (2 Replies)
Hi Everyone! I will be in Johannesburg for half a day in September on a Sunday. I will be with my parents and we are there just for the Sunday evening. We have decided to stay in the city and explore a bit. I am looking for a semi-touristy area to stay one night , where we can walk around a bit and get the feel for the city. Ideal would be an area which has a couple of lively squares or street markets and some decent restaurants/cafes and maybe a little more to see as well. Safety...More

Gautrain from OR Tambo to Johannesburg? (10 Replies)
We will have another 9 hour layover on our way back to the states. We took the train to Nelson Mandela square(Sandton) on our first layover . Does the Gautrain take you into Johannesburg? If so what stop is it? Or what trains would we take? Is there anything to do near the Gautrain station in Johannesburg? We are currently in Tanzania right now. Awesome place.

that may be a good idea. Do you have any suggestions for a tour company?
