Really enjoyed a trip to this vibrant area and learning the history about the area and the local communities. Shops and street food a must try experience. The fresh juice bar was excellent. Only downside was the litter in the streets and the nyope addicts loitering around. I will definitely return as the rewards far outweigh the downside.

Fordsburg Square is a huge outdoor market in the center of Joburg's Indian community, occupying a full city block. The market is open from Friday evening through Sunday evening, every weekend of the year. My favorite thing about the market is the Indian/Pakistani/Afghani street food, although you can also shop for cheap DVDs, clothing, jewelry, and toys. Really though, Fordsburg Square is a place for eating and people-watching. My favorite stops are the grilled chicken tikka stands on the Albertina Sisulu side of the market, and the fresh-squeezed sugar cane juice shop at the back near Central Avenue. Order sugar cane juice mixed with guava -- it's the best. There's also a nice vegetarian restaurant in the center of the market.

Note that Fordsburg is a primarily Muslim area and hence there's no alcohol for sale. Also, be sure to ask before taking photos of people, especially of women in abayas, and be aware that parking can be hard to come by on the streets surrounding the market.

We went there and it was about after 9pm when we left, found all the road lights were off, and lighting in general was extremely poor.and no visible security. We were subsequently robbed by the car guards who threatened to stab us if we did not hand over cell phones. Was about 8 of them. Security was not around until way after the incident and did absolutely nothing. How can you not have proper lighting in place so we can see what is going on around us? Traumatic experience. I Lost my cell phone the previous week and the one taken was a donation from a friend. Prisoners in our own country.

Visited the Fordsburg Square flea market on Saturday afternoon. Had a great Chicken Tikka meal. you've got to try the "Malai Boti", which are chicken cubes in tikka sauce, grilled over the braai. That gets served with Naan bread, which is Yumm.

As a person of IndoPak-origin, Fordsburg is definitely my favorite spot in Johannesburg. I have always complained that the food sold as Indian-Pakistani food outside of the Indian subcontinent simply does not qualify as our authentic cousin. Until I went to South Africa and visited Fordsburg.

As you can tell the biggest attraction for me is authentic India-Pakistani food. They have the tastiest Chicken biryani I have eaten outside of Karachi. Pani puri, jalebi, falooda, kulfi, pakoras, Peshwari karhai, tikka kebabs (Indian-Pakistani BBQ), you name it and Fordsburg will have it.

If you are in Johannesburg and wish to try authentic Indian-Pakistani food or buy spices and typical Indian-Pakistani vegetables., you now know where to go. However, please bear in mind that it is former township where rather low to middle income South Africans live. This means, do not expect high level of hygiene or perfect streets. The streets are often crowded with cars and people, there are annoying beggars and loud Bollywood music is usually played... Just like, a busy quarter in an Indian or Pakistani city. The vendors are friendly and people on the streets might be look at you curiously, if you are Caucasian. We never had any unpleasant experience - no pick-pockets, no snatching or something like that. Been there several times and always felt safe. Just remember to take precautions for South Africa.

Tip: Take cash (ZAR) with you as, unlike the rest of the Johannesburg, many street vendors will not accept cards.

Just remember to take

We have been in Fordsburg several times and never encountered something unpleasant

Sights, smells and sounds reminiscent of India..... You hear the Bollywood music, smell the street food, bargain at the stalls for spices, food stuff and a variety of other gimmicks, clothes and wares. It's an assault on the senses and definitely feel as if you're on the Indian continent, it definitely doesn't feel like you're in Johannesburg! it is safe walking around the streets, however, the beggars can be irritating. But even that is experienced in India - I just love walking around Fordsburg at night, it definitely is another world!

Let's start with what's there-
A flea market operated on weekends and comes alive after the sun has set.

Variety of grilled foods operated under flea market conditions so forget about hygiene.

The theme is India. Expect Indian movie songs blaring from the make shift tables.

Past due branded cosmetics.

Bootlegged Hollywood and Bollywood new releases. Also available are bootlegged clothing and perfume.

Popular Indian snacks and sweets.

What you also get to experience are the multitudes of beggars, pickpockets, touts, the filth, the dangerously broken sidewalks, the incognito drug dealers, the money exchangers lurking away from prying eyes, the piles and piles of rubbish breeding rats and other animals, and if course the accompanying stink.

Parking is a nightmare and unsafe.
Food and other popular restaurants nearby keep the crowds coming back.
Roads are constantly blocked by inconsiderate double parkers who simply ignore and disregard the jam they cause.
It's the only local area night life so the locals accept it, no matter what the conditions and no matter what the social ills this place breeds.

Good luck venturing in.

Not a big bazaar by any means, and not much to choose from in terms of merchendise... but it is the only authentic night bazaar in Jhb that we have found. The shops around the bazaar stay open late too, so it is really the only area with any night time shopping on the streets. I love it for the fact that it allows us a somewhat normal lifestyle in a city where everything has become so generic or unsafe. I think it is great.
